Heads up, Angels. While our podcast is suitable for all ages, keep in mind these episodes were produced in a different era and may include scenes of danger, crime, or themes some listeners may find sensitive or outdated. When doing our rewatch, we do our very best to discuss everything with care, context, and compassion, and always with a love for the show and respect for our listeners.
SPEAKER_00Last time on Good Morning Charlie, here's all about the roller skates and Uncle Bo. And coming up, Good morning.
SPEAKER_02Hey everyone. Welcome to Good Morning Charlie, a Charlie's Angels Rewatch podcast. I'm your host, Chris Berryman.
SPEAKER_00She is so brave and beautiful. And with me is Hi everyone, I am Colby Smith. She's back. How are you doing?
SPEAKER_02I'm great. I would I would like to report on two things. I I want everyone to know the pigs have not returned, my two little pigs. Wherever they are, they're thriving with the other pigs. And the other thing is, I'm really I don't understand your resistance to explaining what a flugelhorn is to me. You're the musical one of the two of us.
SPEAKER_00Well, I did look and see that it is like a larger type of trumpet.
SPEAKER_02Uh was that information shared with me? I don't think it was.
SPEAKER_00I think that it might have been. I should have looked up like famous songs that feature a flugelhorn so I could maybe notice a difference in the sound that a trumpet is versus a flugelhorn.
SPEAKER_02What about you? Are you full of the vigor of the season?
SPEAKER_00Um, well, it is getting a little warmer. So just let everyone know that I am not a fan of the heat.
SPEAKER_02Uh you don't like the heat?
SPEAKER_00I sure do not. The sun in general, not a fan.
SPEAKER_04Oh yes, you're right. I'm afraid of your heat.
SPEAKER_02Why is that? Is it because you're the color of skim milk?
SPEAKER_00It is because I am fair-complexed.
SPEAKER_02You are so white, you're blue.
SPEAKER_00That is very true. Like a thin sheet you could just see right through me. Uh, so it is not my favorite time of the year.
SPEAKER_02What have you been doing?
SPEAKER_00Uh, what have I been doing outside of working on this podcast?
SPEAKER_02I mean, that c that clearly isn't taking up much of your time.
SPEAKER_00So you and I went to a convention together. We did. A little horror convention. We had a wonderful time. I we weren't together when this happened, but there was someone there dressed up as the killer from a movie called My Bloody Valentine.
unknownUh-huh.
SPEAKER_00And the twist to their um costume was that the head was extremely oversized. Like, you know, 10 times the the size of like a normal mask would be.
SPEAKER_02I saw him. He was a Funko Pot, My Bloody Valentine.
SPEAKER_00Pretty much. And now it is something that I have to recreate on a different character. I might do Ghost Face. I might do Jason Voorhees. I saw it and was like, this is the best costume I've ever seen. It's so much fun. Like it's whimsical. Um, and people like immediately smile when they see it.
SPEAKER_02First of all, won't it be a nice feeling to know what it's like to have someone smile when they see you coming? I like that for you.
SPEAKER_00Definitely a change of pace.
SPEAKER_02And also, there's no pretty much to it, Colby. He was a Funko pop, my bloody Valentine. That's what he was. Because it was implied with his giant square.
SPEAKER_00I just thought he was like a bobblehead.
SPEAKER_02Okay.
SPEAKER_00I mean, you make a very good argument, but yeah, when I saw him, I I thought bobblehead.
SPEAKER_02There's no good. What and some I'm going to I'm going to lose my mind. All my hair is going to fall out. That some some Funko Pops are bobbleheads. I'm looking I'm pointing at some right now on my wall.
SPEAKER_00Yes, this is a wonderful visual medium podcasts.
SPEAKER_02I would like everyone to know Colby does a lot of things well. Creative costume ideas, because I've seen his costumes for Dragon Con. They are so obscure. They're clever if you know what they are. But out of the 80,000 people at Dragon Con, maybe three people get it.
SPEAKER_00I wanted the entire group to be dressed as the Brady family from the Brady Bunch movie doing the um the contest to win the $20,000 and their little jumpsuits. And um no one was as excited as I was.
SPEAKER_02When was this?
SPEAKER_00Last year.
SPEAKER_02I was with you last year, and you never mentioned that in front of me because I would have made it happen. Do you know why I would have made it happen? Because that's funny. Everyone would get it, and I would have made it happen. Why? Because people people like me and people will do what I suggest.
SPEAKER_00We have to carry around a little music so that we can sing the same song.
SPEAKER_02That's implied. Oh my god, my hair. There goes the last strand of hair on my head. Why don't we get to this episode instead of Of course we're going to have the music with us because as we walk along and we see an open spot, we'll stop, start our music, and do our routine. That's of course I mean, God help me. All right, everyone.
SPEAKER_00I do think that that is implied, but you know very well the group that we would be with would not know that is implied. I've broken out. Are they willing to learn choreography?
SPEAKER_02This podcast has turned into a fever dream. Let's get started.
SPEAKER_00Why don't we?
SPEAKER_02Do you think you have a picture of that bobblehead, My Bloody Valentine?
SPEAKER_00I know I do.
SPEAKER_02Then please put it in our stories and do a little poll. Great, great.
SPEAKER_00And everyone was a bobblehead or a Funko Pop.
SPEAKER_02Well, no, it's the same thing. He's a Funko pop bobbleheaded my bloody Valentine.
SPEAKER_00I don't know why you're so upset about it.
SPEAKER_02Because this is how you do. I am so upset. I'm ready to see through space and time.
SPEAKER_04Powerful enough to bridge space and time.
SPEAKER_02Today's assignment is. It's irrelevant what today's assignment is because everyone's gotten upset at how you can't understand how some Funko Pops are also bobbleheads. But for the two of you remaining, today's assignment is Angel Trap. And here is your case briefing. The Angels are asked to protect a colleague of Charlie's named James Camden. He's a World War II vet who believes someone is targeting and picking off members of the same wartime Intel unit. Will he be next? The Angels ID the killer early on, but will they be able to outsmart one of World War II's most infamous undercover assassins? And now for your super secret Intel. The original air date was January 5th, 1977, at 50 Minutes. Colby, do you know what happened in 1977?
SPEAKER_00Um, well, it was no longer our nation's bicentennial.
SPEAKER_02That's all I have to say.
SPEAKER_00Okay. That was what happened. It was not the bicentennial anymore.
SPEAKER_02It was no longer our nation's bicentennial. I'm celebrating my own personal bicentennial right now with the way my blood pressure feels.
SPEAKER_00I bet you are.
SPEAKER_02This episode was produced by Barry Rosenswag. We mentioned him in a previous episode, The Seance. Written by Oh God, why? I have post- I have PTSD over Beamish. This was written by Edward Lasco. He's a frequent Charlie's Angels writer, directed by George McGowan, who previously did Consenting Adults. He also did a lot of pod faves like Love Boat, Heart to Heart. Major guest star Lurk Colby, it's Fernando Lamas in your famously parodied by Billy Crystal on SNL for years. I love this dude. He was born in Buenos Aires, studied drama, law, and also an incredible athlete.
SPEAKER_00Wasn't he a Did I read that he was an equestrian? Did I get that right?
SPEAKER_02Yes, he was a swimmer, so where does one end and the other begin? He rose to fame as an actor quickly in Argentina, caught the attention of Hollywood, and was signed to MGM in 1949. He was indeed the ladies' man, two ex wives in Argentina, lots of Hollywood affairs with leading ladies. He married movie and swimming star Esther Williams, and eventually acted and directed on TV, including some of my faves, The Love Boat, House Calls, The Hardy Boys Nancy Drew Mysteries, and he even directed his own son, Lorenzo Lamas, who's also my secret lover, and Falconcrest. He was 62 in this episode. He died five years later of cancer. And that's very sad. But here's kind of a fun fact. He was married four times, and his son Lorenzo was married six times, and I can't even get married once.
SPEAKER_00I mean, if you had a b better attitude. Face? Personality? Talents.
SPEAKER_02Taste and friends. Charlie's Old War bar. See, you've upset me. Charlie's Old War Buddy. I'm gonna leave it in so people can just see the the it the effect you have on me. James Candon, he's played by guest star John Larch, who himself was a WW2 vet. He guest starred on, you name it, all the pod faves, and he's one of those instantly recognizable faces where you think, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, I've seen him. And Colby, when you were making notes on this, I cannot believe.
SPEAKER_06And I can't believe.
SPEAKER_02You missed the fact John Larch was on a 1962 ep of Alfred Hitchcock Presents.
SPEAKER_00Was he? No, I did miss that.
SPEAKER_02Well, one of us has to do our research. That's like if I missed the fact he was on the magical world of Disney in 1959 in two episodes of Texas John Slaughter.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, that show. Angels, we're gonna take a quick break and we will be right back.
SPEAKER_04Don't forget, angels. Prime time is crime time.
SPEAKER_06This could be the beginning of a very meaningful relationship.
SPEAKER_04So grab Bosley. I have a run! Charlie. Good morning, Angels. And get to work.
SPEAKER_06Do you ever get the being shot at? Never.
SPEAKER_04Charlie's Angels. Weekend starting at 12 a.m. Eastern on Get TV.
SPEAKER_00I'm gonna start us off. An unknown man parks on the rooftop of a parking deck with what appears to be painting supplies. The man in coveralls sets up a ladder that enables him to view a pool across the street from the parking deck.
SPEAKER_02Oh, really quick, do you know what I thought when I saw that man in his painting coveralls? I thought right away he looked marvelous.
SPEAKER_00You look marvelous. He uh is not bad looking.
SPEAKER_02No, it's the Billy Crystal thing. Oh my god, try to keep up.
SPEAKER_00Well aware, thank you.
SPEAKER_02I'll be taking applications for new hosts.
SPEAKER_01And that's something that's going to be staple to every job application you ever fill out.
SPEAKER_00The man brushes a few strokes of paint as the camera focuses on a man floating in the pool reading a book. The man in the coveralls reveals a gun with a silencer and shoots. The floating target sinks beneath the water and the assassin flees, but not before approaching a small kitten that he rescues. This is the second episode in one the same season where there's a stray kitten that is adopted.
SPEAKER_02In that episode of Little Bobby Skip.
SPEAKER_00I remember, yes.
SPEAKER_02Also, he uses one of those non-existent silencers which we established.
SPEAKER_00That they only like dampen the sound. They do not uh take the sound completely away.
SPEAKER_02I wish I had something to take the sound completely away.
SPEAKER_00At the Townsend agency, we meet John Camden, mid-sentence, stating that Smith, Kingston, Walker, and now Stambler in San Diego are all dead at the hands of an assassin. All of the deceased and our client were agents of an Allied intelligence unit during World War II. All of the deceased and our client were agents of an Allied intelligence unit during World War II, under the command of a man named Dan Worth. Charles Townsend was Danworth's aide during the war. Charlie chimes in with a possible lead for information and suggests an agent named Janine Manchon, who happens to be residing in Los Angeles. Sabrina suggests escorting Camden home due to the fact that it will not take the assassin long to get from San Diego to Los Angeles, and that Camden is in imminent danger. This is a very somber start to an episode. This has not really been the case in previous episodes. At Madame's, which is uh Janine Manchon's shop, the angels are attempting to get information. It is unclear how much information the angels have provided Manchon, but she zeroes in on one name that matches the details of the killings. The name is Jericho. Manchon seems to be reluctant to help. The angels are told to return the following day after Manchon talks with a French government intelligence contact. Uh, also during this scene, they're really only showing one area of the shop, and there are maybe two mannequins and maybe two racks, and there is nothing in the shop, not a thing to be sold. There's a scarf, maybe a settee. Please leave my shop.
SPEAKER_02Jeanine Montchamp is played by American actress Phyllis Avery, although she herself, in real life, did spend much of her childhood in France. She, as an actress, retired in the 90s but became a real estate agent. She's very, very French. Her accent is perfection.
SPEAKER_04We come from France. Oh, France. Well, that explains everything.
SPEAKER_02Colby, but have you ever been to France?
SPEAKER_00No, I have not. I would love to go, um, maybe next year.
SPEAKER_02I'm sure you'll come up with a theme for costumes and not bother to tell me. I've only been to Paris. We took the channel over from London. And the moment I popped up at the top of the station into Paris, it was absolutely everything you wanted to see and wanted to feel and wanted to smell.
SPEAKER_00We get a very short scene where the assassin checks into a hotel and insists to the concierge that he and the cat are companions and requests some milk for the cat or cream, you know, in a saucer.
SPEAKER_03May I have a saucer with some milk in it? And the room, of course. I'm sorry, we don't allow pets. Listen. I'm sure you can make an exception. Did you say milk or cream? Cream works better.
SPEAKER_00This was kind of exciting to me. The Dust Clerk is played by Jim Jansen, and this is one of his first credits. This is now our second mention of an actor who is in Gilmore Girls. He plays Reverend Skinner. Uh, I just thought it was um a fun little connection. Who was the first person we saw? And the Reverend. Oh, the uh the sheriff in Angels and Chain plays the mayor in Gilmore Girls. We join Sabrina at Camden's home. Camden appears to be stewing, and his anxiety is very clearly growing. Sabrina attempts to placate Camden. Jericho has found Camden's home and is staking it out from a car with his kitten companion. Then we see a disguised Bosley pay a visit to Camden and Sabrina, who provides Camden with a picture of Jericho and then helps himself to Camden's liquor. Bosley also shares that he has alerted the Los Angeles police who will be assisting, and then he goes on to lay out the plan that Sabrina will pose as Camden's girlfriend, and Camden will essentially be bait to draw out Jericho. The Angels and the LAPD will be there for the sting whenever Jericho makes his move, likely in a park near Camden's workplace. Bosley shares that the bulletproof windows are being installed in Sabrina's car. Considering how many cars they have replaced and how many times the angels have been shot at, why would this not be standard on their car?
SPEAKER_02You would think.
SPEAKER_00Kelly's car just got blown up.
SPEAKER_02I mean you would think.
SPEAKER_00I thought Charlie spared no expense. Jill and Kelly are at uh Madame's, and Manchon is just finishing her conversation with her contact from France. Her contact agrees that Jericho is likely the assassin. Manchon hands Jill and Kelly a picture from the war era of a young Fernando Lamas. The next morning, the cover has started, and Sabrina drives Camden to work, and we see that Jericho is already tailing his target. At lunchtime, Jericho and the kitten are still present as Camden and Sabrina order lunch at a hot dog cart that Kelly is stationed at. Jill and Bosley are hiding where there is a vantage point of the carts and benches, and a few LAPD officers are undercover as groundskeepers throughout the park. Jericho approaches Kelly, who attempts to veil her surprise by saying that the old man who just left made a pass at her.
SPEAKER_06Wouldn't you believe that old man just made a pass at me?
SPEAKER_03It is our curse and our blessing always to be young inside.
SPEAKER_00The team gets poised to strike as they are unable to determine Jericho's plan. Through binoculars, Jill remarks that Jericho is culling the bush of dead flowers. And we see one lone bloom left. I wondered, is this meant to be a signal that Jericho is aware he's being watched? And picking off the dead blooms are kind of like a symbol of the members of the unit that he's already dispatched?
SPEAKER_02I took it to be just a building out of his character.
SPEAKER_00A softer side of this assassin.
SPEAKER_02He pays attention to detail and and how you need to pay attention to things for them to grow and blossom. So he sees a dying bloom, he picks it off so the shrub can do better. He saw a stray cat and he picked it up and began to take care of it. I th I think this is character development.
SPEAKER_00Jericho and Queso have left the park. If you're watching the paper is, I named the kitten Queso because I thought it was a cute name. Jill and Bosley tell Jericho to his hotel, and Jill sets up her cover in the hotel lounge. Jericho warns a fake suitor played by Bosley to leave Miss Monroe alone, and it provides the opportunity Jill needs to get closer to Jericho as they begin talking. Jill gives Jericho A business card essentially with her number and address on it.
SPEAKER_02Her home address.
SPEAKER_00Her home address. Hi, perfect stranger. Here's my full name, my phone number, and my address. Please come murder me. Bosley and Kelly are at Jill's house, and Jill shares You know, it was the strangest feeling being with him.
SPEAKER_06I had to keep reminding myself this man kills people. Yet he seems so kind and gentle.
SPEAKER_00Jericho then phones, and the two set up a lunch date at the same park where Sabrina and Camden are. The lunch date sets up more time to spend with Jill and confirmation that Jericho will try to strike as soon as possible, perhaps even the next day. I really like the conversation between Jill and Jericho. Um Jill has a wonderful a very like disarming quality to her. Like when she's in the bar with Jericho, she he you know watches her on the phone and uh she's like applying as if she's in a little distress, and then she immediately asks him for a favor. And I think part of her disarming character and her beauty, I thought while I was watching the scene, would anyone say no to this woman if she's asking them for a favor? This is one of my favorite episodes of the first season. Uh the depth that they give to Jill uh is really wonderful to watch. Queso is back, and Jericho receives a phone call from an unknown man that shares someone is inquiring about Jericho, and that could potentially implicate this mysterious caller who then urges Jericho to dispatch Camden quickly. There is then another scene uh with Jericho and Jill. They are walking in, I want to say Santa Monica Park. Uh I'm not 100% correct. Uh maybe.
SPEAKER_02It's it's Santa Monica Park, but that refers to a broad area of park in Southern California. If it looks familiar, it's because much of the park is set up that way. And where they filmed Olivia Newton-John doing her outdoor skating scene in Xanadu is just around the corner.
SPEAKER_00Jericho repeats Jill's information from the previous lunch, but incorrectly, which makes Jill think that she is being tested. Jill suggests having lunch again the next day, and Jericho remarked that he will be busy for lunch. This indicates to Jill that one tomorrow is when Camden will be killed or, you know, attempted. Kelly and Jill then pay another visit to uh Madame's to talk to Manchamp, who mentions a man named Paul Cassette, who was recently in the Paris newspaper and is becoming an important political figure. This may be a coincidence, but Paul Cassette was in the same unit in France during World War II. Uh, but it is worth noting. There is an odd exchange before the angels leave, and Manchamp is upset by the conversation of her previous romance with Jericho, clearly implying that she still has feelings for him. It is the day of the sting, and the team is assembled in the park to catch Jericho. Sabrina and Camden have now likely had at least three hot dogs in a row. Jericho arrives with Queso and is spotted by Kelly, who radios everyone. Jericho positions himself up a hill with a view of Camden. As Jericho pulls his weapon, an LAPD officer yells to put the gun down and then fires as Jericho raises his gun. Jericho stumbles out of the bushes in an attempt to try for Camden again, but is met with yet another shot. All the members of the operation run towards Jericho, who has fallen at a nearby tree. Jericho remarks that for some reason he is not surprised Jill is present, and Jill tells Jericho that she is sorry.
SPEAKER_03I wonder why I'm not surprised.
SPEAKER_00Kelly and Sabrina mention that Jill is bothered by the conclusion and her mixed feelings. Jill then arrives late. We are informed that Paul Cassette, whose political career was starting to flourish, hired Jericho so that the news of his special skills wouldn't be leaked and used against him in his future as a politician, even though he fought for the Allies. Jill states she does not feel good about setting up Jericho. Charlie tries to offer some words of encouragement, and Jill exits very solemnly, and the episode ends on a very somber note.
SPEAKER_02It lightened the mood a bit to see David Doyle stumble into some of the set dressing.
SPEAKER_00He like knocked his foot on the desk or something.
SPEAKER_02And Jacqueline Smith covers it up with a smooth move, Bosley, and they keep right on going.
SPEAKER_00Again, you know, noting um the depth that this um provides to Jill's character and um the sort of atmosphere that uh the office normally has. We've had several like horrible things happen in previous cases. Uh and there are moments where the angels are, you know, definitely compassionate and empathetic. Um, but this does sort of show that there, you know, can be a different side that like, though it is a job well done, it does not mean that it hasn't, you know, affected an angel in one way or the other. Um another reason that I really, really enjoy this episode.
SPEAKER_01And everyone, that is Angel Trap. Thank you for being with us this week.

SPEAKER_02What it was.
SPEAKER_00It's um like it the box makes it look like it's a board game, but it's um a like target shooting game. So it comes with two like pistols that you put the um uh you load it with um what do they call them? Uh suction cups uh at the end of the pistol, and then you shoot it at targets. Uh I'll definitely put that in our story. I don't know why it came up when I was searching for this episode, uh, but I was very excited to see something new that I had never seen before.
SPEAKER_02Everyone, Colby does a great job of posting photos we reference on Patreon. It is free to join. Go check that out. And we'll see you again next week on Good Morning Charlie.
