Well, I have a um somewhat troubling update. All of the leaves are dead or dying.

Yes, they are. The pumpkins themselves still appear to be okay, but the vines just aren't looking really great. I sprayed insecticide. Um, that is okay, of course, for the vegetable. Uh, we'll see if it works. I, you know, culled all the dead leaves. I added some fertilizer, and then I uh sort of tilled the topsoil up just a little bit. Uh so we're on the fence right now.

The chief of police for the LAPD, or better known as the Angels' old boss, has called upon the Townsend agency to help him look internally within the Vice Squad. A series of busts have happened at local massage parlors that may be a front for sex work. But the vice squad seems to always come up empty-handed. Perhaps they are being tipped off, and perhaps the angels get more than they bargained for.

Ooh, I already like the intrigue. They're coming up empty-handed because maybe they're being tipped off. I love that. Your super secret intel. The original air date is May the Fourth be with you, 1977. At 49 Minutes, it's written, produced, directed. We've talked about all of these people. Produced by Barney Rosenzweig. We first, well, we mentioned him not too long ago in episode 11, the seance, and all the episodes. Written by Edward Lasko. We've talked a ton about him. And his daughter, Lori Lasko. Her nickname is Silver. Much like the Lone Ranger's Horse. She is a writer. I tickled myself. And also an artist. She wrote six episodes of Charlie's Angels. One episode, well, there's this one. Now, I'm gonna change gears and talk about location alerts. This is a fun little tidbit. Everyone batten down your hatches, brace yourself, and hoist your mainsail because the Venice Post Office still there at 1601 Main Street. Go ahead there now. This is used as the front of the LAPD jail, much like my home in Chattanooga has often been used as both the LAPD jail and the Venice Post Office.

He's the only actor other than Burt Reynolds who appeared in The Longest Yard at 1974, and then the Adam Sandler 2005 version. Disney, Disney, and more Disney. He was in the magical world of Disney in 1976. The Thanksgiving Promise was the name of that episode. He was in the Rocketeer Colby called Classic. You know, with you know who and you know who. He was in the very first, everyone sit down, everyone stop screaming. He was in the very first Disney Channel original movie. The name of that original movie? The very first one? Under wraps. Hitchcock connections, because I like to keep Toby happy. Hitchcock's final film, The Family Plot. And it just so happened he, meaning Ed Louder, was Hitchcock's final victim ever filmed. Dark Shadows, we've mentioned already, it was his very first gig, his big gig. Two episodes of the A-Team, which is super fun, and we bring it up because Dirk Benedict himself is in this episode. It is a bright sunny day in Los Angeles, and Lieutenant Fine just received an all points bulletin to the vicinity of Eighth and Grand to respond to a disturbance at Paradise Massage Parlor. The lieutenant affirms he is on his way. Lots of passers-by are leaning in the window and at the door of the parlor as two young women pass through the threshold to the street just as the lieutenant arrives. Inside lay a young woman on blood red carpet, and a struggle can be heard in the distance, and then a gunshot. A man named Bert has just shot an irate customer who was yelling at and slapping the young female employees. Bert calls the lieutenant Doc and tells him to fix the situation, exclaiming that this is what Doc gets paid for.

Bert lunges at the lieutenant and the lieutenant fires. Lieutenant Fine takes the gun from the deceased customer and places it in Bert's dead hands. Sirens are heard arriving outside. The young woman lying on the floor unexpectedly whimpers but does not open her eyes, startling Lieutenant Fine. When the police enter the parlor, Lieutenant Fine quickly raises his arms and explains he is with the Vice Division. The officer asks the lieutenant what took place. Fine states that Bert put a slug in one of the customers upstairs and then turned on him, which gave him no choice but to shoot Bert. The officer checks the woman on the floor and calls for an ambulance while suggesting when the young lady comes to, perhaps she can recall what happened.

I want to point out what Colby just laid out for us as of the opening scene is essentially what happens every time he tries to throw a game night.

We've already talked about Lieutenant Fine, who's cousin to Elaine Stritch. Now we're gonna talk about Bert. Bert, a great name, Bert, played by Timothy Carey. Much like me, he made his film debut as a corpse. He's done two episodes of Charlie's Angels, this one and season two. It is the well, depending upon how you look at the debut of uh the first episode of season two, he's either in the second episode or the third. We'll get into all of that. This six foot four actor is and was a cult favorite, and he's known for being just as eccentric as in real life as he is in the early Grindhouse films in which he starred, such as, Oh, this is uncomfortable, such as the White Witch Doctor. Chain of Evidence, Bayou, Revolt in the Big House, which also describes a game night at Colby's house. He has appeared as a bouncer who throws out James Dean in East of Eden, and as a hired hitman in the killing by Stanley Kubrick. His list of television credits include The Untouchables, the TV series, not the later movie, Rawhide, Big Valley, Gunsmoke, Daniel Boone, Columbo, Sidarski and Hutch, Chips, and Beretta. Everyone go get your cockatoo.

We join the Angels and Bosley as Charlie is informing them that this case came from the Angels' old boss, Police Chief Fenton. Sabrina very quickly identifies Fenton as having been staunchly opposed to female officers. Charlie states that Chief Fenton needs outside help, to which Jill quickly asks if the trouble is coming from inside the department. Charlie confirms and specifies it might be in the vice division. Massage parlors have been getting a lot of attention in the press lately, potential covers for prostitution, however, every time the vice department hits one of the parlors, they always leave empty-handed, suggesting that someone on the vice squad may be tipping off the parlors. Bosley has arranged for Sabrina to go into the vice division as a visiting advisor from Phoenix, Arizona. It is very too like, in my opinion, it's unclear how the Angels can go back to the LAPD with covers having been plucked from the LAPD. Right. I mean, maybe they're separate buildings. Maybe the departments like don't really see each other that much, but I am confused.

I am very confused. I understand Charlie plucked them out early on in their careers, but they were in the geek the academy.

Kelly will try to find and get information out of the um employees of Paradise Massage, while Jill and Bosley will be the new management at the Paradise. It has been a moment since Charlie has had a female visitor. We hear what may be the loudest plumber calling the angels to inquire on what is making all the noise. Charlie is being aided by a female plumber who stops very awkwardly what she is doing to sweetly hold Charlie's hand. Did you notice what Jill and Kelly are wearing in this opening scene?

You know, I just watched it, but no, I can't remember.

So Jill's shirt appears to be suede. And Kelly's looks, I mean, it doesn't look quite like leather, like it might be polyurethane. Uh, but neither of these clips look breathable. I really hope they're not filming this in the summer.

No, I can promise you it is not pleather. It is leather and suede. I remember now. Things were, you got the real deal back in the 70s because remember, saccharin, asbestos, we were a hearty people. And you wore leather and you wore suede, and you went on with your day.

Sabrina has been given an office and is using her real name. We will have to assume that perhaps the angels were in different precincts and relatively unknown, as well as Chief Fenton sort of making this happen quietly. Sabrina is introduced to Lieutenant Howard Fine and will be his assistant. Howard wastes no time asking Sabrina about a colleague that Sabrina has to work quickly to excuse not knowing him. Howard shares a recent tip was provided to the Vice Squad about a new place named Tillies, and it needs checking out and suggests Sabrina try to convince Tillies that she is a sex worker. Two young women are walking out of the police station, and Kelly quickly pursues them. Kelly tries to play off that she worked at the paradise recently, but the ladies do not remember her. She proceeds to ask who sprung them from jail, and one of the women replies, Miss, we don't know who sprung us.

This is a very unsuccessful outing for Kelly. And she didn't take any of that taco either. We get a very brief scene with Jill and Bosley setting up their covers as the new operators of the Paradise Massage when a man comes in named Brezhnik, who is the owner of the building. It's a very awkward exchange. It is not funny at all. I don't know why he said, I bought this building to become like a temple, uh, and then proceeded to lease it out, and then talks about people wearing leaves. I just truly do not understand this scene at all.

It could have been completely cut out. Lieutenant Fine places a call to an unknown man. Uh, so this is Starbuck from Battlestar.

Uh-huh. And then his roommate appears from another room, sort of interested in the phone call. And like I kind of immediately decided that these two men are together. It just seems not um awkward, but it seems like close quarters, but it's not my business.

Look, here's a lineup. No, I have met him in real life, and he is an older gentleman. And even then, I I would have entered into any number of living situations with him.

Well, with the furnishings and the complete lack of style in that apartment, I'm maybe I'm not convinced they're together. Um, so uh to be determined. Look, the lieutenant explains that uh the help the chief gave him is a woman and her credentials are too good to ignore, then says some sort of film noir nonsense.

Lieutenant Fine wants her to have an accident as soon as she leaves Tilly's. The man on the phone wants to refuse killing a woman, but the lieutenant assures him that refusing is not a choice. Lieutenant Fine and Sabrina arrive at Tilly's, and I giggle at this scene because we get our first glimpse of Sabrina's gum-chewing New Yorker that I'm so glad that we will get plenty of in the future. It tickles me to death. Uh I just I love it so much. I really wish we got like more of a taste in this scene, but it is coming in the future. The two unknown gentlemen are already waiting in their car to spot Sabrina, and they foul the attempt up from the start. They peel the tires, which immediately alerts Sabrina to their presence. They make a go at her twice, uh, like smashing into this huge dumpster. Uh, after the second attempt, the men leave. Sabrina fortunately like spots a ladder and is uh able to sort of escape and get out of harm's way. Sabrina manages to obtain the license plate, and she is with Bosley and the Angels as they check the registration.

Kelly states, sounds like you were set up, Brie. Thought crossed my mind, yeah.

And Sabrina agrees. Jill asks about Fine, and Sabrina mentions that he has been on the force many years, and Charlie interrupts with information that the car is registered to a cadet at the police academy named John Barton, which is Starbuck who we're talking about. Sabrina is unsure due to how quickly it all happened and being a little shaken. The uncertainty prompts Kelly to decide to re-up at the academy and asks Charlie to get her into uh this cadet Barton's class at the academy. So, yes, now we are back with my favorite roommates, Barton and a man named Miller in police uniforms. And Kelly makes quick work of getting acquainted and a chat has had about their loyalty to the badge and allude to getting extra paydays outside of their regular duties. The Angels have put together that Miller and Barton were put in the academy to start out being cops on the take, and now the Angels need to focus on who they may be working for. Bosley mentions the victim at the beginning of the episode, a woman named Natalie Sands, is out of intensive care and may be able to answer some questions. So it's time for Sabrina to pay her visit as a vice squad agent, while Jill and Bosley have a license now and can start trying to bait themselves for the crooked cops. And Jill makes an ill-timed pun that Sabrina and Kelly do not appreciate.

Terrific! Okay, you got your fish, you got your bait. Let's just hope they nibble. And you, you lucky girl, you'll get to play Monsieurs to the street crowd until they do. I knew there was a rub. Oh, you could have gone all day without saying that.

It's time for a little guest star alert. We've already talked about him, Mr. Dirt Benedict. Love of my life, born in 1945 in Montana, where the men are men and the sheep are scared. We all know him from Battlestar Galactica and then later the A-Team, but he has tons of other TV credits, Y5O, The Love Boat, Alfred Hitchcock presents Colby, Baywatch, Murder She Dun Sat Down as She Wrote, as well as Snakes in 1973, but everyone wait. Dark Benedict, like every other guest star in season one, has been. I just can't. I can't because I'm gonna say a name. I'm gonna say a name I love saying. He was in the 1978 television movie Cruise into Terror with John Forsyth, Christopher George, and Linda Day George, along with Hugh O'Brien from Lady Killer. Now, this is his first appearance in Charlie's Angels, but we are going to see him again in season two's episode, The Jade Trap. What kind of trap? Jade. A jade what? Trap.

Sabrina just so happens to interrupt a visit that Fine is paying to Natalie, where he is attempting to drug her IV. Before Sabrina and Fine exit the hospital room, Natalie stirs, and Sabrina, I am not kidding, jumps at the opportunity to ask this woman a series of questions after having been conscious for two seconds. She asks questions about the paradise, and Natalie confirms that it was a cover for sex work and that they were tipped off by someone she never saw named Doc, who could also be helping to post bail. Natalie confirms there were two men who would accept the payoff from the paradise, but she's never seen those men either.

How about that? Well, you never give me a chance. Because you interrupt, much like Sabrina interrupts a visit that Fine is paying to Natalie. Natalie is played by Joanna Kearns, an actress and director born in 1953. She is known for playing Maggie Seaver in Growing Pains. She's also been in Pond Faves, such as I couldn't handle it if I didn't mention it. Rhoda, she was in a season three episode, and she played her very famous role, uh The Customer. A spelling connection, she's been in the love boat, lots of other stuff. Three's company, Laverne Shirley, Magnum PI, tons of directing credits, which I I I love. One Tree Hill, Scrubs, Medium, Alley make a deal, which is how I learned to be a lawyer. And interestingly, she tried out to be in the 1968 Olympics as a gymnast, just like I did. So that Joanna Kearns is still going strong, but the Disney connection. She was in the movie Hot Lid Cold Feet and a backup dancer at Disneyland. She was born in California in 1972. What about that, Colby? She not only tried out to be a gymnast in the Olympics, like I did, but she was a backup dancer at Disneyland in 1972, just like me. I just want to know, Colby, if Kelly and Barton are off to lunch.

As Chris stated, Kelly and Barton are off to lunch, and Kelly swings by the paradise and comments that it is open again and makes sure Barton knows it. Kelly earlier informed Bosley and Jill of Jill.

Beverly Hillbilly! Kelly earlier informed Bosley and Jill where lunch would be so that they could set up the payphones at the restaurant. Figuring Barton would call in about the paradise, Barton does make a call, and Bosley is right next to him to hear Barton ask for none other than Lieutenant Fine. And he calls Fine Doc to discuss the paradise. The tape recorder Bosley glued under the phone will provide evidence that Fine is Doc and is connected to the Paradise. Jill attempts to call Bree to inform her, but Fine calls the Paradise and proposes that Doc will help keep the cops out of the Paradises business for $200 a week and gives directions on where to leave the cash. Sergeant Duncan arrives to pick up a prisoner and royally screws everything up when he asks Fine if S. Duncan is Sabrina. Oh, sorry.

Sergeant Duncan, I'm just in town to pick up a prisoner. This S. Duncan, that couldn't be Sabrina. Yeah, it would. You're kidding. Oh, is she relative? Uh, close ex-wife. Yeah, we used to work together before we split up, and she and the two other girls went to work for Charlie Townsend.

You mean uh Townsend investigations? Oh yeah.

And her ex-husband spills all of the beans, including Kelly's name, because men are dumb. Fine immediately calls Miller at his apartment and tells him that it's all a setup. Kelly is in the academy to find him and Barton, and they are running the paradise as a sting as well. After he hangs up, Sabrina turns the corner to greet Fine, and Fine starts working on getting Sabrina and the other angels together at the junkyard.

BT Tubbs, at the end of the scene, the cameraman's reflection can be seen in the glass office. Alright, so the roommate to which Colby has alluded, which should have been me all along, I see you, Dark Benedict. Is Tom Legon? He is a film and television actor who started in his mid-20s and has been on all the things we talk about quite often, as well as 22 episodes of The Young and the Restless and Dallas, but I guess Dallas we talk about a bunch. He's been in films like Pank Your Wagon, Jump, The Last American Hero, Joyride. And he was on the front cover of a gay romance in 2015. Deb Colby, I really would love to see us post a screencap of that.

Jill leaves Bosley and the team waiting to bust Barton and Miller because she is becoming worried that no one has come to pick up the cash at the drop site. So they've thought that whoever these two people were coming to pick up the cash from the paradise uh were going to show up. They prepared a sting for them. But um, thanks to Sabrina's ex-husband, that is not going to happen anymore. Jill meets up with Kelly and is trying to inform Kelly that Barton, Miller, and Fine are the operation, but their conversation is cut short by Barton suggesting Jill join them for the evening. It's too it's kind of like an awkward scene when they all meet at the restaurant. Uh Miller comes out and Barton's like, hey, I just ran into my friend. And then they introduce Jill. And he's like, I've got an idea. Why don't we, I guess, have some fun this evening? But then he says, uh, but before we do that, I've got to make a quick cut, a quick stop to uh pick up uh something. Like, this sounds like drugs. Like this, it's so it's such an awkward exchange. It's like whatever you're saying sounds illegal. In the meantime, Bosley and Charlie are discussing the trouble that Sabrina's ex has caused. Apparently, he called the agency to check the information he got from Fine and revealed that he blew Sabrina's cover. This is the last time we see him, by the way, so no more opportunities to mess things up. Bosley is urgently trying to find Sabrina, but also knows that wherever she is, she is with Fine and is in trouble. Jill and Kelly's ride-along with Barton and Miller leads them to a junkyard, and Jill knows that their cover is blown, and they run for the entrance to the junkyard with the men giving chase. The junkyard provides a lot of hiding spots as the angels make their way through rows of cars trying to get the upper hand on the men. I really enjoy the maze that the junkyard is. Uh, it's a really, even though it looks very large, it's kind of a confined space and it allows them to create a little bit of suspense and like a little bit of cat and mouse. And when uh Barton and Miller get subdued, this is our first sort of judo chop that we get from Kelly, which we will also see many times in the future.

This reminded me, because what doesn't, of that famous junkyard scene in Nightmare on Elm Street. I think it was part three and four, where Freddie comes back to life because a dog pees on him.

Fine and Sabrina show up, and Fine immediately reveals that he knows what Sabrina has been up to, and that it is the end of the line for her. To his surprise, once entering the junkyard, his accomplices are being held at gunpoint, and now so is he. Fine decides with no way out to shoot himself. In this scene where Sabrina is sort of kind of holding on to Fine, we see that Sabrina is wearing a little Scorpio necklace, something that I've never noticed. Uh, because usually she's wearing the necklace that says Sabrina. Right. Uh, and I forgot that Kate, Jacqueline, and myself are all Scorpios.

We have mentioned in previous episodes that in the 60s and 70s, the New Age movement was very popular, also known as the human potential movement. It had gained tons of popularity as well as Eastern philosophy, which we see in this episode's in regards to Jill mentioning the chakras in the body. The word chakra means wheel or cycle. The chakras in the body refer to energy centers in the body from the base of the spine to the top of the head. Massage is seen as a way to help release blocked energy in the body, and perhaps emotional stress because the mind, body, and spirit are all connected. In the 70s, hugely famous individuals, such as John Lennon, popularized traveling to India. Many may remember the movement with the Bhagwan Shri Rajnees and the short-lived community in Oregon and the controversy. If you do not know about it, I would highly suggest that you look it up because it is wild.

First of all, everyone, I've been on mute because Colby, in a rare moment of humor, got me so tickled, I almost just freely urinated. So I've been on mute, and I'm so glad I got myself together because I have several many questions for you, Colby. One minute you're Bob Talon, and the next minute you just blow out the pronunciation of this movement. Before we sign off, I wanted to do a little deep dive into the title of this episode because I myself have been confused as to how the word blue came to mean off-color and brisque or morally questionable. And then you have the blue laws. And I've never I live in a state where there are blue laws. And for the first few years I lived in this state, you couldn't get alcohol on a Sunday because of the blue laws. And frankly, Jesus. Or well, you can't say that. And also, you couldn't get alcohol on holidays because of the blue laws. And frankly, Sundays and holidays are when I need alcohol the most.

I took this opportunity to educate myself, everyone, and I in turn, because much like Whitney Houston, I believe that children are the future. Teach them well and let them lead the way. Blue, meaning indecent or risque, the most widely accepted explanation of that goes back to 18th century Britain, right about the time I was born. And it referenced a collection of jokes and stories named Blue Laws, or Blue Books supposedly circulated and containing material considered scandalous. And by the early 1800s, blue had become associated with sexually suggestive or indecent. And that's where we get expressions such as blue language, like I'm going blue. We still hear that today, which means you're gonna hear something vulgar or dirty. Um in the mid-20th centuries, a blue movie was another name for porn. But Colby, tighten down your curls because blue laws means something completely different. It has a different origin. And it would make sense that it would be the same because alcohol would be considered indecent. So why wouldn't blue laws mean the same? Nope. Blue laws are laws restricted activities on Sundays, such as alcohol, shopping, or certain forms of entertainment. It dates back to this will come as no surprise once everyone hears it. Colonial New England, especially Connecticut. And a much more likely explanation is blue was being used to mean strict, rigid, or puritanical. In the 1700s, a blue-nosed Presbyterian or a blue person referred really to someone with severe, and I mean real severe, moral views. Thus blue laws became a mocking term for someone overly uh regulated because of their moral and religious uh convictions. So it seems kind of contradictory. Blue could mean both too moral blue laws and not moral enough, like blue jokes. But Colby, that is the magic of language, and language does that quite often. I love language.
