Heads up angels. While our podcast is suitable for all ages, keep in mind that these episodes were produced in a different era and may include scenes of danger, crime, or themes some listeners may find sensitive or outdated. When doing our rewatch, we do our very best to discuss everything with care, context, and compassion, and always with a love for the show and respect for our listeners. We are officially in season two. It doesn't matter if I had a whole introduction laid out. Colby is going to interrupt.
SPEAKER_06How dare you interrupt the public performance?
SPEAKER_14We are gonna break down the first episode of season two, but where are you? And who am I? And what is this? Well, I'm Chris Berryman, one of the hosts of Good Morning Charlie, a Charlie's Angels Rewatch podcast. With me is your other host, Toast of the Town, Ginger Biscuit himself, the curls in a whirl.
SPEAKER_01The ladies, man, man's man, man about town.
SPEAKER_14Welcome to the stage, ladies and gentlemen.
SPEAKER_01From dancing to directing, let's give it up for the multi-faceted and empowering Queens, opening the door for the next generation.
SPEAKER_14Colby Smith.
SPEAKER_10Hi, everybody, and welcome to season two. We could not be more thrilled.
SPEAKER_14We already said all of that, but you know what? That's what post is for.
SPEAKER_01We had to remove them in post-production.
SPEAKER_14Colby, it's been a minute since you and I have chatted, so I I need to know what is new. Tell me what's new.
SPEAKER_10I'm afraid I don't have anything new. Uh, no updates for me. For me?
SPEAKER_14I'm glad you're catching on. I'm so mad. I'm so enraged.
SPEAKER_17Lames on the side of my face.
SPEAKER_14You would think now, after a whole season of this podcast and Charlie's Angels, you would know. We are going to ask each other how the other one is doing, and for updates and clever stories and adventures. You know what? You know what, everybody? It's season two. Cheryl Ladd is with us. I'm just gonna take charge of this whole thing and ask Colby questions. Colby! You recently posted a pumpkin update. Only, I don't know, four months late. How are your new pumpkins?
SPEAKER_10I have planted some new seeds. One of them has some growth. A couple of leaves are sticking up out of the soil. Uh, I did check today to see that the other one was uh whether it was growing or not. It has not yet. But I will keep my fingers crossed that these will be uh healthy and produce many, many more pumpkin babies.
SPEAKER_14Will you pledge right now in front of me, the spirit of share, and tens of listeners, you will toast an update every couple of weeks, a picture, just a picture.
SPEAKER_10Yes, I will pledge to do that. I had already tried to make a mental note that I will take pictures of the growth and want everyone to celebrate with me when I have a successful pumpkin patch. A very sincere one at that.
SPEAKER_14Next question.
SPEAKER_10You too, you're right.
SPEAKER_14You're going to be taking a cruise.
SPEAKER_10I am, yes, all the way up to Alaska.
SPEAKER_14Thank you. Thank you. Let me murder she wrote some questions out of you. You guys, this is how I have to. And our questions out of me or answers. Every uh Yes. Yes.
SPEAKER_10Well, you take questions, so I didn't know if you wanted me to come up with a few.
SPEAKER_14Does everyone hear this is what our typical interaction is, even when we're not recording?
SPEAKER_13She ripped the phone cord out of the wall and left him there to die.
SPEAKER_14I often not only have to murder she wrote questions out of him, I have to ask the questions and provide my own answers when he just sits there stunned like a mullet. Colby, how many days will you be on this cruise?
SPEAKER_10Or seven days.
SPEAKER_14And this is only your second cruise because we talked about it a few pods ago.
SPEAKER_10That is correct, yes. I've only been to Cozumel, Mexico.
SPEAKER_14Which I believe is in the opposite direction. Are you flying from Atlanta to where? Vancouver. Vancouver. And from Vancouver you will board the cruise line, the name of which is Royal Caribbean. That's rather ironic. Royal Caribbean is taking you on a cruise.
SPEAKER_10Yes, I already had the thought.
SPEAKER_14I didn't even know Royal Caribbean had cruises on the West Coast because I didn't either. But I guess if Eastern Airlines back in the day can fly you to the West Coast, why aren't you flying Alaskan Airlines? Seems like you would want the whole package.
SPEAKER_10Um, because a a wonderful friend of mine who is on the cruise with me, uh, he is a flight attendant. He does not work for Alaskan, so we are not taking Alaskan Airlines.
SPEAKER_14I get it now. And who's going with you? What's the name of this person? And I'll just pleep it out. Who is it?
SPEAKER_10Uh, my friend is the flight attendant.
SPEAKER_14You're going with two people, one of whom is a flight attendant. Correct. And are you going to be sharing a cabin with these two? We are. But I've never been on a cruise. Aren't the cabins rather tiny?
SPEAKER_10Uh, this one is more of like a deluxe cabin, which is nice. So it won't be super tiny. And I don't believe either of them snore. So hopefully, and you know.
SPEAKER_14Does everyone here, all right? What are you gonna do for seven days? Do you think you'll take your setup projector like you did when you went camping? Ho ho!
SPEAKER_10That is a wonderful question. I would love to. I do want to see whatever show that they have. That would be nice. Uh, of course, and then we'll port.
SPEAKER_18Is that like a noun or a verb? Where did you go to school? I said, where did you go to school?
SPEAKER_10Uh, and explore the city's um, maybe some, you know, well watching. Uh, so there will be things to do.
SPEAKER_14Are you going to take any excursions?
SPEAKER_10Mm-hmm, yes.
SPEAKER_14What kind of thing?
SPEAKER_10But I do think we're going to be panning for gold, so. In the river.
SPEAKER_14Well, I didn't think you were gonna be panning for gold in the ship's casino, Colby.
SPEAKER_18I said, where did you go to school?
SPEAKER_14Today's assignment is Angels in Paradise. We are covering parts one and two. Colby is going to give us our case briefing.
SPEAKER_10Everyone meets Chris Monroe, the newest team member at the Townsend agency. Big shoes to fill replacing Jill Munro's. Perhaps even bigger shoes since they belong to Chris's big sister. While Sabrina, Kelly, and Bosley welcome a new angel. The celebration is cut short when Charlie calls to inform the angels that he has been kidnapped and they are all flying out to Hawaii in a matter of hours to meet with his kidnapper. Will the angels rescue Charlie? And will they have to break the law to do it?
SPEAKER_14And now for your super secret intel. The original air date was September 14th, 1977.
SPEAKER_07I just want to be a member.
SPEAKER_14Coming in at one hour and 44 minutes. What, what, wait, who what how how what you say?
SPEAKER_00What who and a hawk?
SPEAKER_14Well, that's because this premiered as a two-hour movie, which explains a couple of things we're going to discuss in a moment. In the syndicated version and on the DVDs I have, it's broken up into two parts. As is the next episode. We have a new opening with much of the same footage except stuff with Cheryl Ladd is added, and a slightly updated narration by John Forsyth. But once we start the episode, the actors' names appear at the beginning of this episode. Again, because it was originally presented as a movie. So these credits for this particular episode don't appear just within the opening theme, but as it starts. Kate Jackson B.T. Dubbs has a new side part. And I have I have a theory as to why she has this new side part and why it disappears. And as her character, Sabrina, she is so mad at the character of Bosley about the new angel, she uses his first name and calls him John. And it's it startled me. Don't act like you knew. This was produced by Ronald Austin and James D. Buchanan.
SPEAKER_11Is that a president?
SPEAKER_14This was written by John T. F. Black. We've mentioned him before in previous episodes, like Angels at Sea, directed by Charles Dubin. He's directed a lot of things we've talked about, like Kojak and MASH. But in addition to being a director, he's an actor. And much like me, an opera singer who performed at the Cat Skills. I've been to a camp in the Cat Skills, but there's just no time to cover that. Location Alert! And then I'm done. Waki! It's a famous beachfront neighborhood in the city of Honolulu. They are filming their full tilt boogie. They are staying at the Royal Hawaiian Hotel, which is still there. And I need everyone to hold on to their hard front wigs. The spirit of all that is good in this world guided me to look this up, and I was right. I thought to myself, Isabel, because my little voice always calls me Isabel, I think the Brady Bunch, who stayed at the Sheraton Joaquik, I think that's next to the Royal Hawaiian hodel. And sure enough, they are right next door to each other. The Charlie's Angels Hodel, the Royal Hawaiian, and the Brady Bunch Hodel, the Sheraton Waukekee Beach Resort. What do you think about that, Colby? Before we turn it over to Colby, well, we'll have a break first while I have a breakdown. New Angel Alert Cheryl, lad, we are absolutely to pieces. She'd already done plenty of things. Did you watch that? Long tails and ears for hats. Guitars and Sharps and Flats.
SPEAKER_16Me, sweet, a groupy song, you're invited, come along.
SPEAKER_10Well, I watched a lot of Cartoon Network. Uh, they did play a lot of early Hanna Barbera cartoons, so I did see I ended I probably did see all of them because there are only maybe 16 or 18 episodes of Josie and the Pussycats.
SPEAKER_14It was just one season. And then they did Josie and the Pussycats in space. All of this is in my brain, everyone, and why I can't even remember my pen number or what I'm supposed to be doing.
SPEAKER_10I'm gonna assume it's the copious amounts of wine, but who knows?
SPEAKER_14How dare you? Hold on, I need to take a little sip. You've made me so absurd. By the way, why do you think they played a lot of Hanna Barbera cartoons on the Cartoon Network?
SPEAKER_10Because they were probably inexpensive.
SPEAKER_14Or the Cartoon Network was Turner Broadcasting, and Turner Broadcasting owned Hanna Barbaro.
SPEAKER_10Hannah Barbera, that makes so much sense.
SPEAKER_14She's been on shows we talk about all the time. But the coolest ones, germane to things we've had discussed in the past, include The Rookies, Policewoman, and Harry O. Her films include Chrome and Hot Leather, which I believe was your stripper name in college, correctly. Satan's School for Girls. Two in 1978, and one in 81. She would also portray Princess Grace Kelly in 1983. And she's continued to have a great career in film and television. Now that we've filled you in on all the background scoop, Colby, why don't we take a little break?
SPEAKER_10We will be right back, everybody.
SPEAKER_16Yes! Beautiful top. With the side tab, the top can be a sound deck or a lookout. And in the hidden compartment, you can keep the camera, binoculars, and earphones you can find here. Charlie's Angel's Adventure Band, new for Hans Pro. Charlie's Angel's Dog eats so differently.
SPEAKER_14Welcome back. I've blathered on so much, I've exhausted myself. So I'm gonna mute my microphone, eat some cashews, and drink this wine. Because why? I believe in the food pyramid.
SPEAKER_12And immediately we were like, she is so brave and beautiful.
SPEAKER_14Colby, give us our breakdown of today's assignment.
SPEAKER_10The episode opens with beautiful aerial visuals of Hawaii, and then the camera focuses on a yacht out in the water. We hear Charlie's voice asking an operator to call the agency in California, and then changes his mind when greeted by his young, slender, bronze companion holding food for the two of them. Half a dozen men or more in a canoe are paddling up to Charlie's yacht with masks and guns drawn as they board. The gangs subdue the crew, and we see Charlie being abducted as a sack is thrown over his head and shoulders. At the agency in Los Angeles, Kelly and Sabrina are feverishly pacing around Bosley's desk, informing Bosley that he needs to inform Charlie that they do not need another member of the team. And Jill cannot be replaced and will be back before you know it.
SPEAKER_03Bosley, it is up to you to talk to Charlie. We don't want her and we don't need her. There's nothing personal. It's just that we don't we don't need anybody. That's right, whoever it is. Now look, nobody can take Jill's place with us. Nobody.
SPEAKER_10Bosley calmly assuages the angels' concerns. Bosley implores the angels to trust Charlie as the tension is interrupted by a buzz on Bosley's desk. The angels prepare to stare down the new member of the Townsend agency. A chipper, vibrant blonde says, I'm here.
unknownHi!
SPEAKER_03Well, I'm here. It's me. Chris. Chris Monroe. As in Chris Monroe, Jill Munro's younger sister, Pigtails Embraces. You got it.
SPEAKER_02What did Jill tell us? Oh, Jill sends her love. She's in Spain right now. She's practicing for a big race. She wants to be the first woman to win Lamans.
SPEAKER_10Kelly asks if Chris has finished college and uh has become a school teacher yet. Chris comes clean that Jill thought she was in college for teaching, but has actually just graduated from the police academy in San Francisco. The revelation dawns on Sabrina and Kelly that Jill has been fooled and that the plan for Chris to be the new angel has been in the works unbeknownst to all of the angels. Bosley enjoys getting one over on Kelly and Sabrina, and the team celebrates as they await Charlie's call, which does not happen for quite some time. When Charlie does call, the greetings are cut short when he reveals that he has been kidnapped and that the team is flying to Hawaii in the next few hours. They will check in at the Royal Hawaiian Hotel and wait to be contacted by his captor. What I I love many, many things about this scene. Um Sabrina is clearly already sunburnt. Those are some rosy cheeks and a little red nose. I think she looks spectacular at the beginning of this episode. I really enjoy Chris's uh introduction and the sort of expansion of the angel family with a kind of subtle notion that the angels have already met Chris, or they at least know a lot about her as, of course, Jill's younger sister. The angels land in Hawaii and are checked in. Afterwards, the angels are toasting to Charlie when a message arrives informing them that they are to go to Waimanalo Beach. I also love this little scene because Bobley can't pronounce Waimanala. And wait for the signal of a red scarf.
SPEAKER_09This is it. Tomorrow morning, 11 o'clock, 2.8 miles from bridge. Way Mano.
SPEAKER_03Bossi. Waimanalo. Right. Beach.
SPEAKER_10There is also an unknown man keeping a close eye on the team. He watched the angels arrive and is now spying on their toast. A goon of Leilani's making sure that they are following orders, question mark. The next day, the angels arrive at the location in the letter and meet Leilani Sako, Charlie's captor. Ms. Sakko's husband has been imprisoned on false charges, and she wants the angels to break him out, or else.
SPEAKER_19Why did you kidnap Charlie Tanson? I want to hire the angels. How much would you charge for an assignment like this?
SPEAKER_09We're not in the jailbreak business.
SPEAKER_19You are not.
SPEAKER_10The angels know they do not have much of a choice and get to work. Leilani informs Charlie that the angels have arrived and are on the case, and though he is being treated as a guest, if the angels fail, Charlie will die.
SPEAKER_14The B-roll footage of the plane. All I know is it's not Alaskan. And all I know is I don't know a flight attendant who can fly me to Canada for free to take an Alaskan cruise. But here's what I do know: I am dead over the non-urgent lounge music playing over the footage of this flight landing. And also as the group enters this hotel, it is so non-urgent. Your boss has been kidnapped, and you've been ordered to get there tootsuit. And there is loungy going.
SPEAKER_10I've but I've got to interject when you're done.
SPEAKER_07Hey!
SPEAKER_14I have no doubt I could not get through one thing. Everyone, could I get through one thing? The answer is no, and that's not a spoiler, because you just heard. They're being greeted with the lays and the kisses, and they're smiling. Meanwhile, their boss could be dead. They've not had the communication Colby has just mentioned. And and instead they're just smiling and happy and getting laid. Stop it.
SPEAKER_08Oh, Nalty.
SPEAKER_14And this this lounge music is playing. What is it you have to say so I can move forward?
SPEAKER_10So, to your point, well, let's tr backtrack just a little bit. Charlie did say get to the Royal Hawaiian and wait to be contacted. So they did have to wait to receive this message. Though, to your point, Kelly mentions she feels like they shouldn't be enjoying themselves. Sabrina likes doubles down and she's like, nope, we shouldn't do anything. We can't do anything until we're contacted. She she meant she was gonna get a drink in. And I'm hoping maybe other Kevin can tell us what kind of plane this is. Uh I'm assuming maybe that it is an Airbus. I'm not sure. Uh, but I would love to find out what kind of plane it is because it is just massive.
SPEAKER_09Then with a long sigh, she's back.
SPEAKER_06I am beyond exhausted.
SPEAKER_14All right, everyone. That was Colby Speak. And as a friend of his for several many years, I shall now interpret what he's just said. The plane landing, you said was a full-tilt boogie, extra deluxe, double decker. And you're going to ask Patreon member Kevin, who knows about airplanes and flights and such. Why don't you also ask your friend I just bleeped out, who's flying you to Canada for the first time?
SPEAKER_10Because I didn't want to tell everyone on the podcast that that friend does not listen.
SPEAKER_17No jury would convict me. I didn't take it anymore. I hated her so much. It it the fe it flame flames. Okay.
SPEAKER_14Let's do a little guest star alert. Colby has mentioned a few times Leilani Socko, Charlie's captor, and that perhaps that nebulous kind of down-on-is luck P.I. having a looky-loo at Osley and the Angels having a drink out on the hotel patio. Maybe he works for Leilani Socko, we don't know. Who is Leilani Socko? We don't know. All we know is the Angels show up after getting a note on the patio, and she comes up in a bikini out of the water. She is played by guest star France Nuyan. Now, France Nuyan was born in France in 1939. She was born to a mother who is French and a father. You were born to a mother?
SPEAKER_17I hated her so much.
SPEAKER_13She ripped the phone cord out of the wall and left him there to die.
SPEAKER_14Her father, Vietnamese. At this point, she was very well known as an actor in South Pacific, the original in 1958, which also starred Rita Moreno, who was reprising her role from Broadway, and she received a Golden Globe nomination for Best Newcomer. In more recent history, she's known for the Joy Luck Club. She's appeared in film and TV. Her credits include a lot of the things we talk about. The original Star Trek, Six Million Dollar Man, Police Woman, Hawaii 5 0, Fantasy Island, Murder. She does sat down as she wrote, Magnum P.I. She interestingly has a master's degree in clinical psychology and has a family practice working with women who've been abused and children who have been abused. And she was awarded the Woman of the Year in Los Angeles in 1989.
SPEAKER_10The Angels set out to obtain more information on the Sacos and their operations, and they split up with each team member meeting a different contact. Sabrina meets with friend of Charlie, Don Ho. Don informs Sabrina that the pair run all of the gambling and smuggling in Hawaii and have some unscrupulous people working for them as well. Sabrina asks, who set Billy Sacco up? He knows there are some new players in town, but does not identify them.
SPEAKER_14Now we finally know who Leilani is and why she's worried about her husband being in prison, and why she's gone to all these lengths to attract Bosley and the Angels all the way to Hawaii. Guest star alert Don Ho. Everyone knows who Don Ho is. Born in Honolulu in 1930. What we don't know and often do not discuss is he was a football star in high school and earned his undergrad degree in sociology. And then he was in the Air Force. But he rose to fame as a singer. He started a small band, it expanded and got bigger and bigger. It turned into a lounge act because that was the style at the time. And he just became known for epitomizing Hawaii. Later became known as the Goodwill Ambassador of Hawaii. His big act was in 1965, Tiny Bubbles. Tiny Bubbles became so big he opened and closed his shows with that. And he was on all the variety shows and nighttime talk shows, and he often appeared as himself on a lot of things we've talked about. He even had his own show in 1976. Oh my god, Colby 1976. And this is what's called good research, Colby, in a callback. He was also part of that Brady Bunch three episode, ARK, in Hawaii, where Greg and Peter had the bad Tiki and Craig wiped out, and Peter had a big spider on his chest, and he sang Tiny Bubbles. That was in 1972. And on that note, because it just can't get any better, we're gonna take a break, and Colby is gonna walk us through the remainder of the episode.
SPEAKER_19I'm Cheryl Ed. You know, strong hair is beautiful hair. And Wella Balsam Conditioner actually helps build new strength into each hair. Watch. One hair treated with Wella Balsam Conditioner, one untreated. Under stress, the untreated hair breaks sooner than the Wella Balsam hair. That's because Wella Balsam helps make your hair stronger. So it looks healthier, shinier, more beautiful. Try Wella Balsam Conditioner. You'll love your hair because strong hair is beautiful hair.
SPEAKER_10Bosley meets with the Sacco's lawyer, Mr. Hollis, who just so happens to have helpful information and documents that may be of assistance. Mr. Hollis does not know why he and Mr. Bosley are meeting, but does seem to be oddly very well prepared for unknown circumstances. Kelly is speaking to a contact that she has in LA. This contact has told Kelly the name of a woman named Kona. Kona runs a massage parlor in Hawaii. A massage parlor very similar to the one at the end of season one. Kona does not mince words and informs Kelly that she does not put her nose in other people's business. As Kelly prepares to leave the massage parlor, she discovers a note left on the car that reads, Angels go home or go to heaven. This note wouldn't be from Leilani's people, so who else knows of the angel's presence? Chris, our new angel on duty, meets with Billy's sister, a school teacher, a lovely young woman who is telling Chris how Billy got mixed up and all this and describes Leilani's good and bad attributes.
SPEAKER_05Can you tell me a little more about Billy's wife?
SPEAKER_18Leilani's charming, greedy, aggressive, educated, bloodthirsty, and arranges the best dinner parties this islands ever seen. Imagine a rotten pearl masta, and you got a good picture of my sister-in-law.
SPEAKER_10A bell rings and students and faculty members stampede to the beach. Surfboards are grabbed, and Chris is invited to surf. But our spy is lurking and shoots Billy's sister. This scene is, well, not only is the scene not good, so the individual who has the gun that shoots Billy's sister, when he's preparing to shoot, it's clearly on a soundstage, and there's like a couple of limbs behind him, but it is bitch black. And then suddenly we're back outside again. I don't think that this was particularly necessary, but let's move on. Mr. Hollis visits Billy in prison to inform him that Leilani is working on Billy's escape and that his sister has been shot. It is clear that Billy has no desire to be in this business. The angels discuss the difficulty with getting Billy out of prison, but Sabrina suggests that it would be easier to take Billy while he's being transported if Hollis can find a way to get Billy in front of a judge. In the next scene, the angels are devising their plan and they're getting like all of the um little pieces they need to uh have their plan come together, clothing and uh like some other little gadgets. Uh, but Kelly is wearing the cutest little nautical outfit. It's uh like blue and white stripes, and it's um the collar is sort of like folded in such a way that it looks, of course, more like a sailor's outfit. I just really like it. Uh when the unknown men who have been trailing the angels ask Kelly what she is up to uh on the beach, she tells them, like on the count of three, I'm gonna scream. And then we pan over uh to the extras who are uh assisting her, I guess, like with of course being safe. The extras are sitting in such a way um that it clearly indicates that they are waiting for the uh the word from the director for them to like pounce on these goons. It's just it's so obvious. It's really kind of enjoyable to me. It's very sort of like indicative of earlier TV. Uh I'm sure there are plenty of extras who are, you know, doing the same things today. Uh, but it just sort of stood out to me.
SPEAKER_14I'm just tickled pink for you because you got to say so many of your words in the same blur about you got to say goons, like, of course, and to me, and that's the quadruple threat. If this were a drinking game, you would have won, Colby. You would have won. I think you should do a mic drop.
SPEAKER_10Would that be like a wine glass drop?
SPEAKER_14How dare you speak to me while I'm actively drinking?
SPEAKER_10Uh-huh. The team discusses the men's involvement and the difficulty it may present obtaining Billy. Uh, then we meet Mr. Blue, the man these goons work for. Mr. Blue wants his men to take Charlie from Leilani, and the Angels set out to free Billy. A clever plan is set up with fireworks, look-alikes, and car accidents that go off without a hitch, and the angels now have Billy in their care and a shack or kind of lean to on a very secluded inlet on the beach.
SPEAKER_14I'm gonna tell you one thing right now before I do our guest star alert. I'm gonna do a couple of them. There is nothing you can't solve if you have that four-part quadruple threat, much like all your favorite words you just got to use a moment ago. You can do anything if you have fireworks, look-alikes, a car accident, and a secluded inlet. You name a problem right now, listeners. Think of a problem in your head. I'm gonna give you a second. Could it not be solved if you had fireworks, look-alikes, a car accident, and a secluded inlet? You're welcome. Now on to our guest star alert. Alan Manson is playing the attorney, Mr. Hollis. We spoke of him in season one, episode 10, consenting adults, when he played that mobster, Mr. Beali. We have another guest star alert, Tommy Fujiwara, playing Billy Sacco, born in 1932 in Honolulu. He passed away in 2016. He lived and filmed in Hawaii his entire life, and I know that's right. He had an appearance in every season of Hawaii 5.0, the original. He made appearances in my favorite thing on the planet next to White Wine, Heart to Heart, and a bunch of other stuff we've talked about. He was in One West Walkie Key, which is another Cheryl Add series, and we're gonna see him again in season five's Walkie Key Angels. I now need everyone to prepare themselves. I need everyone to focus and take a deep breath. As this gentleman was also in the 1978 theatrical release Goin. It has an apostrophe officially in the title, so it's going, not going. Coconuts. Do you know who starred in that film, Colby? You're gonna die. Not in our notes. You're gonna, you're you are gonna plot. You are going to plot.
SPEAKER_10I wish you would tell me.
SPEAKER_14Plot! Donnie and Marie. Shut up. And they played, I believe, themselves. And they found themselves in the middle of a mystery and had to help solve it. I'm sure everyone hoped it would lead to more. Uh, but Tommy played a character by the name of Alecky. Also in this movie, everyone, if you're driving, I need you to pull over because you're you're going to just bleed out. Also, in this movie, and build fifth is Ted Cassidy. And what is Ted Cassidy famous for? Does anyone know? Anyone, anyone, Bueller, Lurch in the original Adams family. Mic drop. I don't have anything else to say. I'm done for the rest of this episode. Yeah, this is it. It's it's all downhill from now, everyone. It's true. If you can work Donnie and Marie and Lurch into the same story, this is quality entertainment. Colby, this is why the people are here back to the breakdown.
SPEAKER_10Lailani calls, and the angels are anxiously awaiting with zero chill.
SPEAKER_05Why doesn't Leilani call? She will. And she's darn good and ready. She's so cool, she's probably having her hair done. Mm-hmm. That's her biggest ad, you're cool. Right. Well, we just have to outcool her, that's all. Yeah, we can wait as long as she can. Right. And then some, right.
SPEAKER_10Lailani tells the angels that she wants her husband back. And oh, by the way, Charlie has been taken from her. Uh, after Sabrina informs Leilani that Billy will not be uh returned to her and that they will put him right back in jail if anything happens to them. They discuss meeting again to find out who took Charlie, and Leilani confirms that it was Mr. Blue. When they leave from meeting with Leilani, they return to the resort, and the angels are immediately then taken to meet Mr. Blue. The Angels want proof of life before considering making a swap with Mr. Blue for Charlie, and they'll give him Billy. Afterwards, they stop by Kona's massage to try and get any information they can on Blue. Kona drops the name Sammy Telford, a local cuckoo who has his nose in everyone's business. The angels then return to the resort, and the front desk has a message that a man washed up on shore.
SPEAKER_06The wallet and his jacket identified him as Charlie Townsend.
SPEAKER_10And that is the end of part one. Cliffhanger. What's gonna happen?
SPEAKER_14Well, originally it would have been a commercial break.
SPEAKER_08Right.
SPEAKER_14Like the big fat, you won't remember this. You may. But if you were doing these television movies, you had commercial breaks all the way through, but then you had your big fat one at the top of the next hour where the network affiliate would reannounce itself as you're watching blah blah blah on W blah blah blah, or for those on the West Coast, K blah, blah, blah, blah, blah. So this made a good, good cliffhanger. But are you ready before we move into what we're going to call part two for the biggest mic drop sequel you've ever heard in your life?
SPEAKER_10I don't know that I can ever be fully prepared.
SPEAKER_14Folks, none of this is scripted. Colby never knows what I'm going to say when he's leading the episode and I interrupt with stuff. He rarely knows. 1978's Going Coconuts with Donnie and Marie and Ted Cassidy's final theatrical appearance was filmed at the Royal Hawaiian Hotel. And that is also where Donnie and Marie stayed, both in the film and in real life.
SPEAKER_10Yes, that is mind-blowing information. Thank you. Can anyone believe it?
SPEAKER_14Would you like to take us back into the breakdown of what we're calling part two?
SPEAKER_10Yes, let's get into part two. Stunned by the news, the angels head off to identify the body question mark. They receive the wallet found on the man, and it is indeed Charlie's wallet, a Christmas gift from Bosley, and a wallet with apparently no photo ID in it. So you still cannot identify Charlie Townsend. The Angels, of course, cannot confirm. So Leilani's head henchman, Ned, identified the man as a thief named Harold, who works for Blue. We get a lovely scene with Billy telling a sunburnt Bosley his and Leilani's romance and reiterating his distaste for their business. I really love the next scene when Sabrina, this is really great. Sabrina, like, hears the music and the commotion going on outside, and then she decides to practice the hula in the mirror. Uh, and then like Kelly comes in and witnesses her kind of practicing.
SPEAKER_04Oh, I hate that. I hate that green. Well, thanks a lot. The hula's great exercise, tighten your pair. Could throw your sacred yak out. No, thank you. That's if you start out too fast. This is fast. Well, no, that's not fast. Yeah. If you start out nice and slow, this is slow.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, that's slow. I know it's slow. Big figure A. This is my figure. That's a figure. That is a figure. You let it go.
SPEAKER_10It's another moment of you know, connection of the characters, but also chemistry between Kate and Jacqueline. Uh, I really, really, really enjoy it. I also do not think it is possible for Cheryl to have on a tighter top. She is already, what, five, four, maybe, probably 90 pounds. This top had to be painted onto her. Charlie calls the angels to let him uh to let them know that he's okay. And then the angels set out to find Sammy Telford. This is the man that Kona mentioned in their last meeting. For some reason, Kelly and Chris are then jumped by Leilani's men, uh, but are rescued by blue zgoons who have been tailing them. Leilani then confirms to Chris and Kelly that it was Ned. Idea that they could exchange one or two of the angels for Billy had they been successful. Kelly and Chris split up to look for Sammy, and Chris finds Sammy Telford at a nude beach. And this scene I do not enjoy. The man who confirms that Sammy is indeed at the nude beach tells Chris that she can enter the beach but must comply with the rules of being nude. Now this might surprise everyone, but I have not been to a nude beach. Don't necessarily know that I plan to go, but I was under the impression that at a nude beach you had the option to be nude. And it was not that everyone was forced to be nude at the beach. And then the man, granted, it is, you know, decent acting, but the man is essentially watching Chris undress so that she can enter this beach. And of course, the first thing that comes to my mind is to the viewer, this is your first episode on this television show as a main character. Not only are you being put in a bathing suit, but in your quote unquote first episode, your character is nude. And I like Cheryl Ladd, you very likely must be an angel. You poor thing. I cannot imagine how she must have.
SPEAKER_14Guest are alert! The man Colby has been referencing as played by Norman Fell. He premiered that same year as Stanley Roper and Three's Company. Later a spin-off, The Ropers. He made over 20 made-for-TV movies, and he won a Golden Globe for Three's Company. He's been in lots and lots of pod favorites. I'll just name a few. The Bionic Woman, Love Boat, Magnum PI, Murder Sheet on Sat Down, and She Wrote. Three's Company first aired as a mid-season replacement on March 15th, 1977. But this particular episode of Charlie's Angels was most likely filmed at some point in the summer of 1977. So he'd already filmed and been on a few episodes of Three's Company by the time he made his appearance in this particular Charlie's Angels episode. And I'm going to say something, Colby, so controversial, yet brave. And are you ready to hear it?
SPEAKER_10You enjoyed the Ropers more than you enjoyed Three's Company.
SPEAKER_14Don't speak to me like that. He was 53 years old. I'm 58.
SPEAKER_08I know.
SPEAKER_14He was 53 years old when he was in this episode of Charlie's Angels. And do you know what? Here's the controversial yet brave part. His body was pretty good.
SPEAKER_10Did you notice, yes, I did know. I mean, well, I noticed because he was a little bit more petite than I thought he would have been. But yeah, I was like, wow, he's really kind of fit.
SPEAKER_14He was extremely fit because at one point he just has a checker of like a checkerboard over his special area. And he is fit. His stomach is flat. He has pecs. He has a burly chest. And yet his face is so wrinkled and looks like that of a 73-year-old.
SPEAKER_10Oh, I can guarantee you he was a smoker.
SPEAKER_14Oh, well, I mean, everyone was. It was the 70s, remember? Asbestos and hairdryers.
SPEAKER_10That is true. So, speaking of Norman Fell, Chris meets with Sammy, who is familiar with Mr. Blue, and Sammy has nothing nice to say about Mr. Blue.
SPEAKER_15Now, what did you want to talk to me about?
SPEAKER_02A man named Blue.
SPEAKER_15A leech. Without a single redeeming human quality. I've told him so to his face. Next subject.
SPEAKER_10And informs Chris that if Blue has anything of value, it will be close to him on his yacht. Also, in this scene at the nude beach, I am a little disappointed. All of these nude uh sunbathers are playing volleyball, and they're all in modesty suits. They're not really nude.
SPEAKER_14Shocking for television.
SPEAKER_10I like, what are y'all doing? Chris relays this information to the other angels who have a hearty laugh at her expense.
SPEAKER_02Well, fine. What would you do in my place? I just wouldn't have thought it would have been his money if it had been me.
SPEAKER_10And then they start devising a plan to find the yacht and free Charlie. This plan will include Billy, who had a pretty good idea that Blue took Charlie. The angels then find the yacht and set their plan in motion. Sabrina approaches Blue's henchman, his name is Deuce, and tells him that she wants to meet with Blue, just her. While the angels are looking at pictures of the interiors of the yacht, Blue calls and Sabrina says that she will give him Billy and come to work for him for better pay. And they agree to meet in three hours.
SPEAKER_14Guest star alert, Cliff Emma. He's excited for this particular guest star, and who is he? Colby himself. Because it's yet another Halloween connection. Yay. Cliff played security guard Mr. Garrett in Halloween 2. He has over a hundred credits in film and television. Let's just sum it up by saying all the pod faves. Back to you, Colby.
SPEAKER_10Blue informs Charlie that one of his angels is on the way to sell Charlie out. Deuce informs Blue that a speedboat is in sight. Sabrina is supposedly driving a little reckless and gives the rest of the team the opportunity to slip off of the boat and sneak aboard the yacht. Sabrina finally tethers the boat to the yacht and begins her act of wanting to work for Blue and being attracted to him. Not sure if that was always going to be a part of the deal.
SPEAKER_09He almost ran into us. He almost hit us with that boat.
SPEAKER_03I know, I'm sorry. It's the speed. It makes me crazy. I can't help it. It makes me crazy.
SPEAKER_16Sexy, I'm sorry. Yeah? Sorry. What are you looking at?
SPEAKER_10Chris, Kelly, and Billy creep around to take over the yacht. Kelly and Billy subdue a goon while Chris tampers what? And Chris tampers with the alarm on the yacht. Kelly positions herself on the bridge where there is fortunately bulletproof glass and locks and she's able to raise the anchor on the yacht. Chris goes below deck to turn on the engines so that Kelly can steer the yacht out of international waters. While Blue goes to investigate the alarm, Sabrina finds Charlie to tell him that they are aboard.
SPEAKER_17Thanks, Mr. Blue. Hey, what is this? I appreciate all you did for me. It was a good try, Roger.
SPEAKER_09Hey, wait a minute! Hey, this is a setup! The girls set me up! Girls? Yeah, the angels! Angels don't do things like that.
SPEAKER_10Alas, the angels do not free Charlie themselves. Charlie has managed to pick the lock on his shackles and squeeze himself out of a window that a child could not fit through, and then seemingly swim to shore. The angels and Bosley then celebrate at a luel, and they all join the performers on stage. The view changes uh the same luel to the angels watching it projected back in the agency office. Charlie calls to congratulate and thank the angels and informs them that Blue is serving five years in prison uh for smuggling some coffee, apparently, and that Billy and Leilani have done a complete 180 and are getting out of the crime business. The angels say goodbye, and Chris asks if they will ever get to see Charlie. And the episode ends with one of my favorite pastimes yelling and throwing items at Bosley.
SPEAKER_19Listen, are we ever gonna get to see Charlie?
SPEAKER_09Oh, yeah, you did. He was right there at the blue.
SPEAKER_19What? What are you talking about?
SPEAKER_09What do you think of the movies?
SPEAKER_03Oh Bosley.
SPEAKER_14I typically yell and throw things at Colby. One last guest star alert for this two-parter that originally was not. He's of Turkish and Greek descent. He has done uh please, all the things, working the cat skills, magic. He was in the police academy movies, a bajillion credits of all the pod faves. I'm gonna pull out a couple we don't mention very often. WKRP in Cincinnati, how Stella Got Her Groove Back, and the Mod Squad. And also, he was in some cartoons like Fred and Barney meet the schmoo. Fred and Barney meet the thing. He was in a terrible accident in 1989. He did often have to utilize a wheelchair. Afterward, Art created a one-man show, The Accidental Comedy. And the show raised, I love this, hundreds of thousands of dollars for project support for spinal cord injuries. And that provided others with crutches, wheelchairs, and other supplies for people with spinal cord injuries. He retired from acting and passed away in 1921. What did I say?
SPEAKER_101921.
SPEAKER_14Well, that's different, isn't it? You know, everyone, once in a while, I make a mistake. And I'm gonna leave this in the episode just to prove, yes, even I, your beloved Chris Berryman, can flub up. Colby, wonderful breakdown. You took a movie, subsequently broke it out into two parts, and just took us right on through it. Job well done.
