SPEAKER_09Last time on Good Morning, Charlie.
SPEAKER_10Is this beautiful, Charlie? The children are voting. My life is at stake. And they're holding a democratic election. How about some results? Soon, Max, too.
SPEAKER_09And coming up.
SPEAKER_05What is this, children? Your position's on the way off.
SPEAKER_16No, it's the first time they go. Well, they're on the human.
SPEAKER_08Welcome to part two of Angels on Ice. Colby, how's it going? We've talked a lot about you lately, and not that I'm resentful or anything. You're jealous, self-loathing, resentful, insecure, and a premature ejaculator. So I'm gonna ask you yet another question about yourself. How is your flippity doo-daw inversion thing? You've not talked about that.
SPEAKER_09I have not talked about it because I have just been informed that I need to have surgery before my back gets worse. Uh not really the news that I wanted to hear. Uh I will be having my vertebrae fused.
SPEAKER_00To what?
SPEAKER_09They'll put a cage in between the vertebra.
SPEAKER_08What's gonna be inside the cage?
SPEAKER_09Well, the cage allows the bones to grow together. Uh, so nothing is like in the, you know, in the cage.
SPEAKER_08When is this surgery going to happen? And may I have durable power of attorney?
SPEAKER_09Uh the surgery was scheduled today for September 30th.
SPEAKER_08Today?
SPEAKER_09Today.
SPEAKER_08Oh, today you got it scheduled, and the surgery will occur on September 30th.
SPEAKER_09Yes, correct.
SPEAKER_08Back to the durable power of attorney. You're okay with that? Should I have the papers drawn up?
SPEAKER_09Yes, I'll sh I'll have all of my Punko Pops uh bequeathed to you.
SPEAKER_08I mean, that's great. I'll sell them. I would love to have your pinball machine to also sell. I really appreciate you asking over the past three weeks. I'm doing fine. I'm thriving. That kid's not just surviving, she's thriving. Don't have any updates other than the water shipped down plague has waned somewhat. There we have it, Colby. You're getting something in a cage, put in your back, giving me a power of attorney. Colby! Question, what is what is today's assignment?
SPEAKER_09Today's assignment is Angels on Ice Part 2. We somehow got through part one. Not really sure how we did it.
SPEAKER_08Mm-mm. I still don't know.
SPEAKER_09And there, yeah, there are a lot of things that we don't know yet. We are on to part two, and we are on to your case briefing. So, some of the things that we were left with was why are they rigging prop muskets to obviously try to kill someone during rehearsals or an actual show? That is probably the why. I'm not sure. Who are they working for? Uh will we find that out? Do we maybe already know? And uh we just haven't made that clarification yet. And we know from part one, the major goons have somehow tricked poor Billy into helping them. Why and how? Moving on to our super secret intel from behind the scenes original air date is September 21st, 1977, as a two-hour special event. His syndicated part two most often comes in at just under 50 minutes. Produced by Edward Lasco, written by Rick Geldenstein, directored by Robert Kelgen. The only repeat-worthy classified details is the ice skating venue used in Angels on Ice was the Los Angeles Memorial Sports Arena and Exposition Park. Before we begin the debrief of part two, let's have a little break.
SPEAKER_04Weekends, weekends, weekends. Nickelobe. Weekends, weekends, weekends. Nickelobe.
SPEAKER_12Ever notice how special a weekend can be?
SPEAKER_04Weekends were made for having fun.
SPEAKER_03Have a nice when you're here.
SPEAKER_05Cause the time is your own.
SPEAKER_03But be two times a year.
SPEAKER_05Be with friends who are alone. Yes, the best time of the week was made for you and Micalobe.
SPEAKER_03Yeah. Weekends were made for Micelobe.
SPEAKER_12Weekends were made for Nicolobe. It's your weekend, something to look forward to. Like Mickelobe. If there ever was a beer as special as the weekend, it's Mickelobe.
SPEAKER_03Weekends were made for Nicelobe.
SPEAKER_09Weekends were made for Nicolobe. Yeah. I want to talk about some things. I've got something to say.
SPEAKER_08There it is. There's the comedic timing I pray for every night if I prayed.
SPEAKER_09Let's talk about some lying, some cheating. Let's talk about some kidnap skaters, Jack and Helene. Jack is actor Jeffrey Benny. He has 19 acting credits with minor roles and a few podfaves, such as the original Star Trek and the original Battlestar Galactica. Helene is actor Cheryl Lynn Rettino, who was uncredited in this episode, which I mean disrespectful. This is her first recorded screen credit, which, like, lucky, I want my first recorded screen credit to be Charlie's Angels. Her second was two episodes of the TV version of Logan's Run. Chris likes to bring this up because it's a fair connection, of course, as well as a sound of music connection. Which he then ties into Vegas and Spencer Pryor, but I'm not gonna let him interrupt. I'm very clever. Chris will also love the amazing Dallas connection. Cheryl was the daughter of Dallas producer Leonard Katzman. Uh she passed in 1995. Leonard Katzman was also the producer of the Logan's Run TV show. She made an appearance in every single season of Dallas. In the early season, she worked with Pam Ewing at the department store, then moved into being Cliff and Pam's secretary. Her brother Frank served as first or second uh AD on Dallas as well. So definitely a tight-knit little family show.
SPEAKER_08I don't know exactly who her character is, was, I can picture it. I did not recognize her as Helene in this Charlie's Angels episode. I may be incorrect, so no one come for me. I I I think the name of the fancy, fancy kind of department store, kind of boutique store Pam worked for in the early seasons of Dallas was simply named the store.
SPEAKER_09Brilliant.
SPEAKER_08When we last left this episode, Iggy, played by Jim Backus, who'd been rescued off the island just in time to get hired at this ice show and then kidnapped. One of the four major goons had assumed his job as prop master because they're rigging those prop muskets to fire real bullets. This new ice show we are launched into. This rehearsal is so patriotic. We have twirling muskets, I referenced in last week's episode. We have the Liberty Bell descending from the ceiling. And do you know what it made me think of? Years and years ago, I went to the holiday spectacular show in Pigeon Forge by Dolly Wood. It was Dolly's Dolly's Stampede. Dolly's Stampede. We're all gathered in a circle. And we referenced this kind of setting when we were talking about the Buffalo Bill Wild West show that used to be at Disneyland Paris. Uh-huh. I don't remember what episode that was.
SPEAKER_09Idol of Pinot's episode. How do you remember?
SPEAKER_08Oh, wow. The show begins with a video from Dolly Parton as Dolly Parton. She's dressed as a big angel. And I thought, it is not going to get any cheesier than that. I love Dolly. She can dress as whatever. I'm just saying it was unexpected. And I thought, well, surely that's the biggest surprise. Her be decked as an angel of the Lord until the lights dimmed. And from the ceiling of this arena, lowered down on a giant platform, was the entire nativity scene.
SPEAKER_09Oh my Jesus. Exactly.
SPEAKER_08He was in there too. Mm-hmm. He was wee. So it reminded me immediately of that whole scene. Now while this is all going on during a break, Max happens upon Kelly and they chat for a little bit, and Kelly learns Max's office had been burglarized, but the only thing stolen was a seating chart, which doesn't sound bad, unless you remember this is 1977, and there was no online stuff back then because we didn't have online. There was no readily available seating chart. You could sometimes go to the venue and they'd give you a little Xeroxed map, but that was it. Kelly doesn't know how that plays into anything, but it adds to her running list of things to ponder. Chris decides Billy is worthy of another looky loo. And the reason is because last episode, when Sabrina was subdued by the Gorilla Goon in Helene's apartment, she bit his hand. Remember I told you that would come back? So Chris says, Let me check out Billy, I'll be super sweet, and if he has a bite mark, that certainly ties him to something anything, which is more than we know now. She's in the locker, mm-training, n PT room, we can't see enough of, and she's chatting Billy up, and this actor does such a good job. I agree.
SPEAKER_03Oh, you like to cook?
SPEAKER_07I love to cook. Spaghetti with meatballs.
SPEAKER_03Is that all?
SPEAKER_07No. I also cook meatballs and spaghetti.
SPEAKER_13That's great. I like a change of pace.
SPEAKER_07Would you like me to cook for you? The meatballs are really small. I can put four in my mouth at once.
SPEAKER_13You put four meatballs in your mouth at one time?
SPEAKER_07For you, those are five. Uh please.
SPEAKER_13Well, who could turn down five meatballs?
SPEAKER_08I mentioned last week he's playing a character who is delayed and we're not exactly sure how. But he, the actor, is so sweet and so innocent that your heart goes out to him, but not in an awww way. Your heart goes out to him for all the right reasons, this character of Billy. Look at him independent, making his way and doing the best he can, which is what we're all doing.
SPEAKER_09And then you How dare you assume what my heart does?
SPEAKER_08The actor does such a great job. You like Billy, and this confirms in our minds he's being taken advantage of somehow by the four major goons. Their conversation also reveals Billy had a crush on Helene, but he knew not to act on it because of Jack. At his apartment later that evening at dinner, we see, oh no, there's no head to it. Billy has a crush on Helene. There's a poster of her on his wall, one of those cardboard stand-ups, which by the way, the Dolly Stampede also had some Dolly dressed as an angel stand-ups you could have your picture taken next to, and smaller eight by ten glossies of her on the wall. He admitted he loved Helene. And he knew even though Jack was married, she loved Jack and would never love him. Billy. The dinner conversation, not that Chris pushed it really, became so Helene focused, Billy gets agitated, upset, and sad, and Chris just stares on because Billy is spilling the tea.
SPEAKER_07I don't want anybody to think Billy's stupid. It's my fault. I did it. They said they had taken him, not her. Just him. And they lied.
SPEAKER_15Who would they?
SPEAKER_07I don't know. It's gonna be running out of a big blue color.
SPEAKER_13Those people that threw the money out of the car. Did you see their faces?
SPEAKER_07No. I couldn't see. They promised they wouldn't touch me.
unknownOkay, it's okay.
SPEAKER_13Listen. You didn't see their faces. But did you hear anything? Did you hear a name or anything? No.
SPEAKER_05I couldn't hear. And I couldn't see. Oh, it's my phone.
SPEAKER_08My God, Colby, such a revelation. So much tea, but well, actually, we really didn't learn anything. Just enough to connect that big car Billy described to Chris to the big car Sabrina saw at Helene's apartment. And it's clear to Max and the Townsend team, Billy really isn't capable of understanding the ramifications of what he did, offering to help those men, as we heard in that dialogue you inserted. And there's no bite on his hand from Sabrina. Cutting back to the arena the next day, Kelly's taking a break outside the arena, and what should she spot? It's that big blue luxury car I mentioned mere moments ago. Seconds even. And she sees the new prop master being picked up by that car. Well now wait, she thinks. If the prop master is involved in something underhanded, and he's linked to the new skaters because they claim he's their air quotes cousin, then that means they are all in on something together. And I would like to note now in this double episode, the blue car officially has more screen time than the Asma Meds and David Doyle. Kelly wonders, wait a minute, if the big blue luxury car is headed to where Jack and Helene are. So on an impulse, Kelly waves down a motorcyclist driving through the parking lot. Good timing, and pays him a quick 20 to follow that car. He hands her a helmet and she hops aboard and off they go through downtown LA.
SPEAKER_14Hey, this is a sending emergency, baby. I need help and I'm in now. What kind of help? Big blue limousine just rounded the corner. Can you get behind it for 20 bucks? 20 bucks, I can definitely get behind and follow that car. Come on, baby. Big man, Limo, let go! Big man, Limo! The downtown side.
SPEAKER_08That 20 bucks equates to $110 today. Kelly and the driver of the motorcycle catch up. It's not easy, but he does it to the big blue car, to a restaurant named Hajibaba's. And I just know this episode is about to get even more racist. It made me sweat while I was watching it because we already have the Henry Kissinger very racist mask depiction of someone from that part of the globe. We have the motorcyclist Jojo, who is played by this actor to be your stereotypical 1970s streetwise jive talking downtown urban African American, who I'm not going to focus on too much because of the things I just said. Driving to downtown streetwise jive talking funky music. And now we're at a restaurant named Haji Babas, and I dread, I dread what is about to happen. So, Colby, will you please take us to a break so we can all gird our loins for all the stereotypes I fear we are about to see?
SPEAKER_09Well, give yourself a calmative, maybe take a sip, and we'll be right back, angels.
SPEAKER_08Colby, this is brand new Sippy I bought on the way home. This is good sippy.
SPEAKER_06Sabrina, Kelly, and Chris. Yes, Charlie Danger. Beautiful doll.
SPEAKER_17He looks really glad and gold. Charlie Dangel's dog. Golden God. Golden marathon girls. And golden fashion. Charlie Dangel's dolls.
SPEAKER_11Good morning, Angel. They've got the bread. Get ready for the hottest kick out action. Yeah, that's something. Every Monday to Friday at 10 p.m. only on it.
SPEAKER_09We are back, everybody. Uh, Chris, why don't you tell us a little bit more about this new restaurant?
SPEAKER_08I don't know if I can. I'm so weak. Everyone, I'm going to pick and choose my words carefully, but this is why we have a disclaimer at the beginning of the episode. These are dealing with themes as they were addressed in the 70s. So we're just we're gonna be fine. We're going to be fine, I'm fine, you're fine. I will gloss over a few things and I will describe a few things as best I can, much like I have the very poor accents of the four major goons, the two subgoons. Okay, all right. This is clearly a restaurant serving Middle Eastern cuisine. Kelly goes in. The interior looks like you would think a Middle Eastern restaurant would look like it's not really country specific. Why? Because this is America and we need our preconceived notions fed. In this case, literally and figuratively. Kelly sees the major goons are joined by some other goons we've never seen, and they go into a special back room. So Kelly skips on back there and finds out from um why this Middle Eastern restaurant has a bouncer, we don't know, and why this bouncer is dressed like an extra from Aladdin, we don't know, except I guess the protection team really everyone he has the turban, he has the little Aladdin vest, he has the puffy pants, and I'm not trying to be insensitive, I just don't know what those pants are named. He has on the shoes, like the genie shoes. And he has that special sword, you know the kind I'm talking about, the name of which I also don't know, but it it's it's that sword. And she just thanks him for being kind and pointing her in the best direction she was lost in this vast restaurant. Kelly suddenly appears as if she's on I Love Lucy and is Lucille Ball disguising herself as Harpo Marks. She appears fully bedecked as a belly dancer with all the little finger symbols and the veil. Good thing she knew where all the outfits were stored and found her size, and thank you, TV magic. The men now, the major goons, and some brand new goons, and I just want one. But they're all gathered in this back room, this VIP lounge, if you will, and they're speaking Arabic. And I know this because the subtitles stated men speaking Arabic. Colby, I also, by the way, know some Arabic because a good friend of mine is Jordanian, and she taught me some terrible, awful curse words I dare not repeat while we're being recorded, but they are the worst of the worst.
SPEAKER_09We can leave them out. Go ahead.
SPEAKER_08Oh, I don't even dare invoke. Occasionally we hear bits and pieces of the conversation in English, and we know they're talking about the arena seating chart, and Kelly hears that too. So it's a clear indication they've robbed Max's office. They're the ones, and they got this seating chart. We still don't know why. They are toasting their criminal brilliance. They are so proud of that seating chart, and they toast to themselves. Colby, because of this dear friend I mentioned, I've been pretty to some traditional Middle Eastern meals and alcohol and toasts, and that's how I knew what they were doing. May I explain it just a little bit?
SPEAKER_09I would love to know, yes.
SPEAKER_08All right. Based on the table layout, because they're all seated around on pillows around a very low table. Based on that, the decanter, the glasses, I'm going to hazard a guess. This is meant to be Iraq. I believe I'm pronouncing that correctly. Iraq or Iraq, it's A-R-A-K. And it's a cordial-like alcohol served throughout Lebanon, Jordan, Syria, and elsewhere in that region. And it's in my very limited experiences, it's a pretty accurate representation of typical Levantine hospitality. But it's also filtered, I think, through that Hollywood lens where they think, what available props do we have that will fit in this space and what we'll read these people are from the Middle East. It's this point where we realize nobody's from Russia. These actors just can't do good accents. What? I was stunned like a mullet. I was like a clubbed-in-the-head baby seal when I put all of that together. After they toast themselves, they look at Kelly and they're expecting her to dance. She tries to get out of it, there's no choice. Kelly is forced to stand and dance to the live music in this VIP backroom while all the major goons and their friend goons stare on and make an uncomfortable snatch and grab or two. But what what did I really liked Jacqueline Smith's performance and I want to know what you think of it because I thought Jacqueline Smith did a great job of acting the part of someone who doesn't know how to belly dance, but is faking it based on stuff she's seen on TV and in movies. What was your opinion on that?
SPEAKER_09Uh she did, you know, a perfectly fine job. I can't watch this scene without thinking of the Bionic Woman episode, Jamie and the King, where she is also forced to do the dance of the veils. Uh it's so similar. They're dressed just alike. Uh, that is what I think of when I see this scene. Uh, but of course, the goon wastes no time yanking that uh little veil off of her face and discovering that she should not be there.
SPEAKER_08Well, yes, yes, and no, you're kind of getting ahead of me. She, Jacqueline Smith as Kelly, acting like she's grasping at straws for a belly dance move, just runs out of things to do. And it's time for this whoopsie doodle Colby mentioned, because just desperate, she starts spinning in a circle like Linda Carter, and she spins her veil clean off her head. And naturally, these major goons who assumed the roles of security guard and prop master immediately recognize her and rip the veil off the rest of the way, as Colby stated, because they're like, hey, that's that ice skater. Why is she here? They say none of this out loud, but it's all implied through their delightful acting skills. She is napped and tossed next scene into the room at the CD docks with the real security guard, poor Jim Backus, Jack, and Helene. Together, the group pieces together some of the puzzle. So this actually turns into a very important scene. She relays to the rest of the group the English she heard in that back room referencing the VIP seating area at the arena.
SPEAKER_16In the restaurant while I was dancing, in between the Arabic, I kept hearing English words like Section D East.
SPEAKER_05Section D East? There must be an oil filler they own or something. No, no, no. Section D East. That's where the VIPs sit in the sports arena.
SPEAKER_16Hey, wait a minute. That file that was broken into in Max's office. It had the seating arrangement for the sports arena. Did Max tell you who would be sitting in that section?
SPEAKER_07He mentioned something about oil people, I think.
SPEAKER_16Oil people.
SPEAKER_08And the prop master, poor Jim Backus, explains he was working on the fake muskets for that number so they could fire little American flags. And Kelly puts it all together and realizes that new fake prop master must be up to no good. Oh no. Someone is probably gonna get shot tonight. Who is gonna do the shooting? Will it be someone in the cast? Will it be someone in the VIP section? Because all signs point to that. The odds are, Kelly thinks, it's those two pro ice skating subgoons who are connected to the rest of the group. I be Colby, I love when you describe things and tell a clever story. I'm gonna ask you to describe part of this. The hostages work together to make a human pyramid, which is not to be confused with a human centipede, which is a very different thing. I've not seen those movies either. And the pyramid doesn't work, and I can't Colby tell everyone what they do next with Iggy's leadership to get out.
SPEAKER_09Uh well, they then become Barnum and Bailey. And uh so some of them, I think two of the men, like, one is positioned on top of the other's shoulders to give them some height. They have fashioned this like seesaw sort of contrapment that is essentially going to be a catapult.
SPEAKER_08A contrapment?
SPEAKER_09Where did you go to school? Contraption.
SPEAKER_08A catapult.
SPEAKER_06I said, Where did you go to school?
SPEAKER_09Yes. So the man on the other one's shoulders jumps down onto the seesaw-looking thing. There it is. And it's Dick Grayson's Kelly up to the rafters of this room, and she somehow manages to grab onto a beam on the ceiling, and then wiggle her way up like an alley cat.
SPEAKER_08Oh, good callback.
SPEAKER_09And manages to open the window in the ceiling.
SPEAKER_08Thank you for humoring me because I was already thinking of how you were gonna describe the device, what you were going to call it, and you did not disappoint. Everything is working out just fine because it would appear the stadium is just a couple of blocks from the CD docks.
SPEAKER_09Right on the waterfront.
SPEAKER_08Right. Because the scenes we've not talked about show the rest of the Townsend team getting all set up at the arena, and we we know these events are running parallel to one another. And Kelly, all of a sudden, fresh out of the skylight, bursts through one of the stadium doors to save the day, but runs smack into some of the leftover major goons, and they lay chase.
SPEAKER_14No time to question that. Just call Charlie and give him that a dress. Tell him he'll find Jackily, Paul and he bears.
SPEAKER_02All of them, all of them, all right, Ellie, Ellie, what's going on? No time, Matt. Just I'll explain later.
SPEAKER_08Now, shout out to my man Billy, who sees Kelly and helps her evade the goons, so she can then swirl up into the locker room as if she'd always been there and put her costume on, her very patriotic red, white, and blue costume in the nick of time, and take her place with the other skaters. Amongst them Chris, who she manages to grab and she fills in really quick and off they go to take their place. Boz is there undercover as a concessions vendor. Sabrina, not at all dressed in a hi-I work at an arena uniform, and here's also my name tag, just has but you know what? I don't question what I'm about to say because Kate Jackson is a human question. She makes her own choices, and if those choices are made for her, I will not question that either. So she's dressed just like a person, handing out programs, like they would sell programs at ice shows and things like that. The crowd arrives for the show's star, spangled red, white, and blue, patriotic premiere, and then we see the VIP section, which they've set up some special deluxe folding chairs and put up a velvet rope and a stanchion, and that's TV language for this is very important. This is the VIP section, but on a budget because we blew it on renting out this real arena.
SPEAKER_09On all those muskets.
SPEAKER_08Um here's another tricky bit. The the VIP oil barons are dressed in a way to make it clear to an audience in the late 70s, they represent a country or countries from the Middle East. Everybody takes their place, the crowd settles down, just like Colby, settle down. The show begins to unfold, it does its thing. They show some of the exact same b-roll footage from the very start of part one. I clapped my hands. You know what? The way I who knows how to even celebrate America anymore. But it's time for the big red, white, and blue spectacular. And Colby, why do you think again this patriotic number was such a big deal?
SPEAKER_09Such a big deal for this episode?
SPEAKER_08Well, why would any kind of ice capage show even want a red, white, and blue number?
SPEAKER_09That is a great question. Perhaps it was like uh there was a cultural moment that was pretty significant that was happening around the same time.
SPEAKER_08Yeah, like maybe even the year before. Well what this was in 1977, so the year before would have been what? I'm bad at math.
SPEAKER_091776.
SPEAKER_08No, we went a little too far back.
SPEAKER_09Uh, 1976.
SPEAKER_08Oh my god, the year we celebrated our nation's bicentennial.
SPEAKER_09Yes, this episode is just in top.
SPEAKER_08The dazzled red, white, and blue skaters hit the ice in perfect formation. When I tell you to stop what you're doing, well, finish the pod, and then go immediately and watch this episode on a DVD or a 2D or a YouTube. It's everything you want. One of my running jokes is when I do a presentation or a talk or on behalf of work, I really put on a dog and pony show. And I always say I will do everything short of having the Statue of Liberty rise from the background. I say that all the time. People just laugh and laugh like a tough part where they hold themselves up all over the aisle. I'm not kidding you, the Statue of Liberty rises in the background of this episode. The Liberty Bell comes down from the ceiling like it's Dolly Stampede. And the skaters do their thing. Chris has already made her appearance. She is not in this particular patriotic number. She's on stage while all of this is happening. All the flags twirling and muskets twirling. Kind of like, uh, Colby, what is that? Color guard, and you have your flag twirlers, and then you have your what?
SPEAKER_09You're absolutely right. Yeah, what do you think?
SPEAKER_08Yeah, but help me out. You have your flag twirlers and then you have your what? What are the gun twirlers called? Americans! No, what is their what is their name?
SPEAKER_09That is a great question. I do not know.
SPEAKER_08Well, you look that up while I finish. R O T C Oh my god. Just look up what it is when you're in color guard and you do not twirl a baton or a flag, you twirl a gun. The skaters are doing their thing. Chris, not in this number, takes advantage of her clown makeup and kind of does a silly little hurdy dirty dr march across the ice so she can get to Sabrina and Boz and tell them what Kelly knows. The two sub goons, Olga and Luisi, break the twirling musket routine long enough to point their guns directly at the VIP section, the row full of oil barons, and Chris, having been positioned at just the right place, flings herself, this all happens super fast and I love it, flings herself across the ice, hits Olga and Louisi in the ankles, throws them off balance, their guns fire upward right through the dangling paper mache Statue of Liberty. Chris snatches the muskets. Kelly, who is in the number, knocks them both out. While, speaking of people knocking people out, Boz and Sabrina make it to that side tunnel, and they, with a very helpful Billy who happens along, deck out Fakey Goon security guard and fakeon prop master. Billy then whips around and sees what's happening on the ice, and he hightails it across the ice to the downed Olga and downed Luisi, and he, because he is so brave and strong and I love him, drags them both off to the side and the crowd goes buh, nah, nuz. They think it's all part of the show. The routine wraps up without Kelly or Chris or Olga or Louisi, as if nothing had happened, because everyone is thinking, what a show! Look at these hilarious patriotic hijinks.
SPEAKER_09Well, now that the uh shout is over, we have a guest star alert. We are talking about Alvin, the choreographer, who was losing his mind while this was all going on, because uh let's just say they didn't follow the choreography. This actor's name is Harvey Jason. He was born in 1940 in London, England. He was actually born on the day of leap year. He is a star of Broadway film, television, and voice acting. He has over 100 credits, which include some of, of course, the pod faves, Wonder Woman, Hawaii 50, Harry O, Policewoman, Night Gallery, The Flying Nun, Batman, That Girl, Scarecrow and Mrs. King. Not only that, but some of my film favorites as well. The Lost World Jurassic Park and Stephen King's Pet Cemetery. But now he also owns and operates the bookstore, the Mystery Peer Books in West Hollywood.
SPEAKER_08Well, he's still running that. Let's give it a shout out, everyone. We're gonna hash we're gonna hashtag Mystery Peer Books in West Hollywood. All right, so we have to have a wrap-up scene, everyone. And during this wrap-up scene back at the Townsend Agency, a lot gets filled in by Charlie over the stock footage of his speaker box. Here is where it all comes together. Charlie fills in a lot of what we've been wondering over the course of this two-parter and still really don't know, even though the episode is concluding. The four major goons and two skating subgoons were dissidents from an underground group consisting of residents from six Middle Eastern countries wanting to overthrow the leaders in that VIP section.
SPEAKER_15Wouldn't you know it? The sheikhs come here for an opaque meeting, go out for a little entertainment, and end up as the stars in a shooting gallery, and they don't even know it.
SPEAKER_08But who were these leaders? Are they all from one country? Are they all from one we don't know? Turns out these are bigwigs in OPEC, and they were in LA for a big meeting. For those of you who have maybe forgotten, but you're kind of now remembering the 70s and 80s. That stands for the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries. This would have been extremely meaningful to a 1977 audience because OPEC was still front page news. Colby will claim to know all about this, just like he claims to know everything about shag carpeting and conversation pits. There was an oil embargo in 1973 and 1974. It led to an energy crisis. America and other countries, and we'll get to why in a moment, saw gas shortages, long lines, odd even gas rationing based on license plates, reduction of speed limits, and oil prices more than quadrupling. That actually happened, and it happened twice. This happened again in 1979 because of the Iranian Revolution. But viewers in 1977, because that second thing hadn't happened yet, they would have that first oil crisis fresh on their minds when many members of OPEC embargoed oil shipments to the US and other countries if they showed support for Israel during the Yom Kippur War. That's what led to that very first oil embargo related to OPEC. I have some information for everyone, but this is freshly hatched information.
SPEAKER_02How does she do it?
SPEAKER_08The flag twirlers and a color guard are usually called the flag line. Yeah? Yes. The faky rifle twirlers are called the rifle line. How about that? And my friend Braxton can twirl, he did color guard and he can twirl whatever. You can hand him, I don't know, some sort of two by four. What did you call a seesaw the catapult? You could hand Braxton a catapult and he could just twirl it. They sometimes also, but the high school I went to didn't. They sometimes have a saber line where members perform with mock military sabers. Did you have one of those in Hee-Haw World?
SPEAKER_09No, we did have the rifles, but we did not have sabers. Probably the wisest choice to have made.
SPEAKER_08Did they just twirl chauntier tractors or what did they twirl?
SPEAKER_09Yes, they twirlled tractors. You're absolutely right.
SPEAKER_08Did you grow up around fields of corn? And when you saw Children of the Corn, did it give you trigger moments?
SPEAKER_09Not really any corn uh in and around Albany, uh much more a peanut, but I love children of the corn and love a corn maze.
SPEAKER_08I've never been to a corn maze, even though they have them here in Chattanooga, Rock City has a corn maze, and I've never gone. Will you promise me here in front of our listeners and the spirit of share and the spirit of how good Kate Jackson looks in every episode?
SPEAKER_09May we go to never do it together?
SPEAKER_08No, may we go to a corn maze this fall.
SPEAKER_09You know what? We're gonna do it and we're gonna record it for the five.
SPEAKER_08Let's film it for Patreon. Let's film it for Patreon. Colby, I don't want to go to a nighttime spooky corn maze. I don't know what you're talking about, and how dare you speak to me that way.
SPEAKER_05Do not speak to me that way in front of the children.
SPEAKER_08I don't want to go to a spooky corn maze. I don't like haunted things, although I love scary movies, and here's why my childhood was too violent and tragic. And my fight or flight is always on. And so when a spooky thing pops out, I I also, since I saw the term saber line, I decided to find out the proper name of the sword the bodyguard had at the VIP lounge in that restaurant. And of course, it's Hollywood. So they're mixing in. Yes, well, yes, that is one of them.
SPEAKER_09Oh, okay.
SPEAKER_08That's sort that's a European term referencing just those curved swords in the Middle East. So you are correct. You're correct.
SPEAKER_09That's what That would have been lovely had it occurred to me when we were talking about it.
SPEAKER_08That everyone, Colby didn't look at anything. That just flew right out of his little ginger brain, and my eyes are as big as dish plates right now. So that's what the European folk called him, and so that's a big umbrella term. But what we really see in this episode is a Turkish sword. Like if you think about the cartoon Aladdin, which we all know is just as historically accurate as the Disney film Pocahontas, the swords the guys are slashing around with that very special curved tip and curved body. Those are called, and and and again, they're Turkish. Please forgive me if I mispronounce it. It's called a kilich. But your answer was also correct, except you didn't answer in the form of a question. And that means he will not be moving on to Final Jeopardy. But join us next week for our next breakdown, where I am sure I will ask Colby any number of questions and have to quiz and murder she wrote the details out. And answer some of the questions I'm actively asking him at the same time. But until then, everyone holds on their tea lead and their hard front wigs and their ice skating triple axle thermal tights because we will be back.
SPEAKER_09Next week will be Pretty Angels all in a row. Don't forget that you can follow us on Instagram and our Facebook page. Our Patreon is free if you'd like to go and look at the extra little tidbits that we post there. We would really appreciate it.

You can also leave us to review on whatever platform you use to listen to a pod. That helps people find us too. And the reason Colby and I want that to happen is because you right now, who's the family we have at the debut of this episode? We think you are fantastic, and we want others to listen and learn how fantastic you are. Just think, in about a month, Colby's gonna have me in a corn maze, a daytime non-scary corn maze. And until then, bye angels.
SPEAKER_00Hi. Bye, angels.
