SPEAKER_10Last time on Good Morning, Charlie.
SPEAKER_06A hospital? What is it?
SPEAKER_00It's a big building with patients, but that's not important right now.
SPEAKER_10And coming up.
SPEAKER_14Don't forget Tinklebell. Good morning.
SPEAKER_09Wow, do I have a very special announcement? Because Colby is out on assignment, which is code four at the free clinic getting his card punched, we have in his stead a friend of the pod. You've seen him, you've heard him. He is a pop culture expert and pop culture icon himself, Kevin Wood. Kevin, welcome back to the pod.
SPEAKER_10Well, thank you so much. I I hope I can live up to your your gracious introduction.
SPEAKER_09We had such a fantastic fan reaction the last time you were here. It was for our QA episode for season one. If you've not listened to that, it's there. Everyone, go back. And people loved the Monday preview. Our Patreon members loved you and Morgan in the Friday dossier. And you are such a wealth of knowledge as the television historian you are, or the classic television expert you are.
SPEAKER_10First of all, instead of saying all that, you could have just said, Kevin, you're old and you have knowledge. And that just would have cut all of that out. Though I think we can surmise that Colby has just jumped from one Aaron spelling production to another because he's on the love boat, isn't he?
SPEAKER_09He is. He is. Do they even have Pacific Princess cruise line anymore? They do. You are really.
SPEAKER_10Mm-hmm.
SPEAKER_09I had no sign.
SPEAKER_10I remember looking at this sometime because they have people from the love boat actually advertising it still.
SPEAKER_09Well, I hope for Colby's sake, he has someone with a clipboard as cruise director telling him where to go and what to do. Oh my god. What do you have coming up you're excited about? Because I think you have something coming up. I also have coming up, and we're both excited about it.
SPEAKER_10You know, that was just such a spontaneous out-of-nowhere question because I'm going to Dragon Con. Are you too?
SPEAKER_09Why, as a matter of fact, I am and I believe. I'm staying in the same room with you.
SPEAKER_10Are you?
SPEAKER_09And I believe in a connecting room, there will be Miss Colby Smith.
SPEAKER_10Well, well, well. That'll be quite the time, won't it?
SPEAKER_09Freshly back with her windswept ginger girls.
SPEAKER_10I'll have to check the dates on the restraining order. I didn't know that they were up so soon, and I have to, you know, I guess you have to re-up every so often.
SPEAKER_09I you know, I don't know how it works because when they are delivered to my house, I just tear them up, just like AARP advertisements. It's especially appropriate Gevin is here with us today. He and I have actually talked about this particular episode for several many reasons. He'll bring up, and I'll bring up it's season two, episode seven, Circus of Terror. Really, I think that that's a bit redundant. Tell me a circus that isn't terrifying. And here is your case briefing. The Barzak Circus is owned by old school patriarch Janos Barzak, and it's been hit by a series of increasingly dangerous acts of sabotage. Animals have been released, people have tampered with equipment, fires and accidents close to fatalities. Janos stubbornly refuses outside help, but his more modern-minded son, David, secretly comes to the Townsend agency and hires Boz and the Angels. What's exciting is Sabrina has a potential love interest here, but he could also quite easily be a suspect. And really, Kevin, isn't that true of all potential love interests? Isn't it? Who are you really? And now for now for your super secret intel. From behind the scenes, the original era date October nineteenth, nineteen seventy-seven. Written by Robert Jaynes, story editor Edward Che Laxo, and directed by Alan Baron. But enough of me Blathering. While we have this incredible television historian with us, let's turn it over to him for a bit. Kevin's gonna tell us some classified details you need to know.
SPEAKER_10Here are some classified details that you need to know. Major Scoop Alert. Circus of Terror was apparently the first season two episode produced with Cheryl Ladd. Although it aired fifth in the original broadcast and seventh in the syndicated numbers we're using, production information identifies it as Cheryl Ladd's first episode filmed as Chris Monroe. The production was still dealing with uncertainty surrounding Pharaoh Fawcett's departure, and the episode was actually prepared and shot in ways that could accommodate either Pharaoh's return as Jill or Cheryl as Chris. By the time audiences saw Circus, they'd already spent a month getting accustomed to Chris, but Cheryl herself was at the very beginning. Another classified detail, Chris' knife throwing assistance costume had previously been used among the feline waitress costumes in season one's Lady Killer, including on Farah. Now I was thinking about this, and I think this is kind of brilliant in a way, because if Farah wore it in an earlier episode, she's wearing it again. It begins kind of the subliminal transition in a way. One last classified detail. The Barzak Circus was set up on the campus of California State University, Northridge, as was the Bionic Woman 1977 episode, All for One.
SPEAKER_09That is fabulous. Well, we've just dumped so much information on everyone. We're going to take a little break.
SPEAKER_06Max Factor's Super Lip Gloss to finger paint your lips. They moisturize and soften. The pure magic part? They shimmer light your lips to give a lasting, super luscious shine. Finger paint your lips with pure magic super lip gloss. Hypoallergenic dermatologist tested. All innocence and glitch by Max Factor.
SPEAKER_09Welcome back to Good Morning Charlie, a Charlie's Angels Rewatch podcast. And it's time for the debrief. And for the first part of the debrief, I'm turning it over to our beloved TV historian, Kevin.
SPEAKER_10Well, thanks, Chris. The episode opens out in, of all places, a circus or carnival. I don't know how you could actually, I don't know what the uh distinction here, because I think the distinction might be that a circus has a bunch of tents with nothing in them. As we can see from the opening, if you look in any of the tents, there's nothing there. So maybe they're still setting up, maybe not. I don't know. But this does come into play later on in the episode because if you look in any of the tents, there's still nothing in them. Okay. So we start up on the high wire, and there is a gentleman here at the Balsack, excuse me, Barzak circus, men in tights, we finally see. So I think this is a brilliant opening because tights. And it's interesting because we also get our henchmen in the first view as well, which normally, I mean, I don't think that really happens in a lot of episodes, but we know right off the start who's doing what. And I always thought that when you have a high wire going on and a net underneath, which I believe is called a safety net, safety net yes, is so that people fall into it and they don't fall into it and then bounce back out, which seems in this particular episode. Because the henchmen have taken the brilliant idea of shooting part of the apparatus, the smallest part where something is hooked onto a trapeze, they shoot that amazingly, and it falls, which I think is interesting because later on in the episode, they can't shoot Kelly Garrett. And she's not on a trapeze, she's just moving. I'm looking specifically in the background, there is a gentleman who is wearing a purple and gold ensemble, which I think is the most fabulous thing I have ever seen. And what I've noticed throughout the episode, and however many days it takes place, he never takes this off, so it must be quite comfortable.
SPEAKER_09He is in the the first half of this episode a lot, and he's uncredited. May I talk about him for a moment? I wish you would. Well, we have our establishing shot of Circus slash Carnival, and we don't know the difference in the two. We have an injured high wire act, and we don't guy, and we don't know why. This background extra is Jerry Marin, his real name. He has a big story at only three foot four inches. He was in the original Wizard of Oz with Judy Garland. He was chosen to be the member of the lollipop guild who handed Judy that giant lollipop. He was only 18 at the time. And when he passed in 2018, he had the title of the oldest surviving munchkin. But right after he was in Wizard of Oz, he starred in At the Circus with the Marx Brothers in 1939. He's been in Hello Dolly Spaceballs, Battle for the Planet of the Apes, Bewitched Kevin, Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman, Seinfeld, and everyone put on your Wayback Machine hats because he was both Mayor McCheese and the hamburger when McDonald's was really big into building that world. So this background extra is so much more than you think at first glance. I'm so glad you brought him up. I think we're gonna have to have our Townsend agency establishing shot and then go inside to meet the son of the circus owner, David, and his heaps and heaps of chest hair, and maybe he'll give us some exposition. I guess it's in the afternoon because they're playing chess, they're hanging out, and they're drinking wine. Bosley's mixing a drink, Charlie over the speakerphone is just talking about the circus, all the accidents that have happened, how the the patriarch does not want to bring in outside help, but the son David desperately wants help.
SPEAKER_10May I interject something before we go further? When they're still over the guy in tights, if you look between the father and the son, the guy in the background has one of the largest bulges I've ever seen on 70s television, just right there for everyone to see.
SPEAKER_09So he does. He knows this bleached blonde Southern California, beautiful Venice Beach muscle guy.
SPEAKER_10And he is prominent in the background of the rest of the episode as well.
SPEAKER_09So that's it it is a moose knuckle that will chip a tooth. Charlie's already running background checks on large circus cartels. And who knew there were circus cartels?
SPEAKER_10Well, that's why the circus industry is so terrifying.
SPEAKER_09And David is definitely taking the lead. His father is unaware. He's made it clear Janos does not know he's hired the Townsend agency. He's walking Sabrina through, giving her the scoop on not needing any backstories. Here's what everyone's gonna do. My father doesn't know. So get ready for that.
SPEAKER_10And he's up undercover in a way.
SPEAKER_09We sure do. And his father's very old school, so be prepared for that as well. And then we cut to the introduction of Kelly and Boz. Of course, everyone's using their real names because why wouldn't they?
SPEAKER_10Well, I think it's interesting that when the two of them are talking, we get our first mention of Chicken Kiev, which I think is a subtle, if you will, there's always a kind of an A story, a B story. I think Chicken Kiev is a C story in this particular episode because it gets brought up more than once, and there's uh it seems Sabrina likes chicken Kiev. He likes making chicken Kiev and offers to make it for her.
SPEAKER_01You're a big surprise. Where do you meet my father?
SPEAKER_05Oh, but you're not anything like him.
SPEAKER_01Well, let's say I'm an updated gypsy. I like these kind of clothes, I like liberating women, and I also fix a terrific chicken Kiev. Gypsy style.
SPEAKER_05Well, I love chicken Kiev.
SPEAKER_09It's clear David is trying to charm Sabrina from the get-go and wanting to cook for her in his own tent there at the circus and make this chicken Kiev.
SPEAKER_10After we have this wonderful chicken Kiev introduction, we come up to Kelly Garrett making her introduction to the scene. And I love how they have an elephant because it's a circus. And I don't know how much this elephant cost, but it was well worth it because I think we also see the elephant one other time. Because the only other thing that we see in the background, we see some horses, and of course we see the elephant, but we don't really see many of those terrifying animals that have been released from their cages.
SPEAKER_09So no, we do not see they do have some sound effects, though. You hear a few lion roars and tiger growls, but you do not see them.
SPEAKER_10But I will say, this is again a David Doyle appreciation moment because no one, no one does this like David Doyle. Because when Kelly shows up at the circus as I don't want to spoil anything, but go-go Garrett, which I'm like, okay, if that's the name you're going for, that's fine. She is paired up with Bosley, and he is in a bowler hat and a bow tie, and he I just he looks like he's having fun, mischievous fun. And I think that is just fantastic. Because of course, when they pull in, they pull up to our henchmen. And I love angry Kelly. You call you know, you get out of the way, you turkey. She screams because they're in the way. And I love that because later on as we uh get into Charlie's Angels, I think she gets more subdued and she gets more of that lip press. Oh, I'm thinking something deep, and she presses on her lip. I love it when she's just balls out, get out of my way, you turkey, and you know, and she screams these things. And I think it's fantastic. I I love that side of her, and I wish that they would have explored that more because I think it's a very important part of her character. But of course, you know, they they pull up, she's like, you know, I want to set up my stuff. I'm I'm go-go Garrett. I want to be I want to be a circus act, and it's not going well between the henchman and her because they just keep going back and forth. And again, we have a wonderful Bosley uh retort where you know he's what do we do? And he's like, Scream, and he's like, Well, if you don't, I'm going to. And that is so perfectly John Bosley. That is that's just a moment there, I think. So, of course, you know, they have their their confrontation.
SPEAKER_01Doing what?
SPEAKER_05My act, I'm Go-Go Garrett.
SPEAKER_02Go go. She jumps over things on her motorcycle. I don't hire no woman to do motorcycle slot.
SPEAKER_05You have something against women?
SPEAKER_00No, no, as long as they wear skirts and stay in the kitchen where they belong. Now don't waste my time.
SPEAKER_05Listen, how'd you like a swift kick in the shins?
SPEAKER_10And I think it's interesting because again, men versus women, we have the owner of the circus comes up, and you can tell he's like, Well, we don't take women. Women belong in the kitchen, and they belong in skirts. And then, of course, she gives them a retort of, oh, hey, I'm gonna kick you in the shins. And I'm like, Really? That's all you had? I'm gonna kick you in the shins? But anyway, but he you can tell he's taken with her. And this comes up later on in the episode. I he you can definitely tell he has his eye on her because he's like, Okay, you belong in the kitchen, but I'll still see your act. You go ahead and set everything up. I don't know who you are, I don't know what your act really is, but you go ahead and set that up because I'm gonna watch. So that's all good. But of course, you know nothing good is gonna come up from it because the henchmen we saw earlier are going to help her set up. And as we do a lot in the episode, then we slingshot back to someone else because we're back to Kate Jackson. And she, in her undercover mode, is now meeting her new partner, who I believe you have some information on, don't you?
SPEAKER_09I do. So we have two a step well, we have one established cover. Kelly is going to try to be hired as a motorcycle stunt person, and I'm sure the son David is going to work behind the scenes to ensure she's hired no matter what. Sabrina is going to become a mime slash clown apprentice with the master mime not mastermind, but master mime Anton Tarloff. He agrees to take Sabrina under his wing because she tells him she's always wanted to do this, always wanted, but never had the opportunity. This guy is played by character actor extraordinaire, especially in the area of villains, Charles Tyner. He was in a cool hand loot with Paul Newman, Harold and Maud, The Cowboys, The Longest Yard, The Outlaw Josie Wales, Planes, Trains, and Automobiles, Disney Alert, a lot of you may recognize him from Pete's Dragon, which was released in the same year as this episode, 1977. You know, I love a Disney Alert. Colby loves Alfred Hitchcock Alerts. He was in Hitchcock's final film, Family Plot. And I also love a Dallas Alert, and he had a guest appearance on one episode of Dallas in 1988. But before I go on to talk a little bit about Janos and his son David, I want to point this out. There's no information out there as to why Charles Tyner did not use his real name for this episode of Charlie's Angels. Isn't that bizarre? It is.
SPEAKER_10Why is that?
SPEAKER_09Well, we just don't know. Let's hop back and we're gonna talk about Janos Barzak, played by Raymond Bieri. He's a very imposing actor. He's the owner of the circus, David's father, and he comes back to Charlie's Angels in season three, Rosemary for Remembrance, playing a different character.
SPEAKER_10He's starting Can I make a correlation here?
SPEAKER_09Mm-hmm.
SPEAKER_10Because when he plays in Rosemary, and I I don't want to spoil anything, but he sees Chris's character that reminds him of someone else in his life. Here we have that same I don't want to call it a trope, but Sabrina reminds Anton of his niece Nadia.
SPEAKER_13So it's one of those things.
SPEAKER_10I don't know how these women remind everyone so much of people in their lives, but it does seem to come up quite a lot that they are duplicates or they remind people of something. So and I only mentioned That because it does come up later in the episode as a crucial point that she reminds Nadia.
SPEAKER_09It does. That's a really good point. I think it is a trope. We're going to talk about more tropes later on. Back to Raymond Bieri. He played in Badlands, opposite Martin Sheen and Sissy Space Deck, Babe Ruth in the 1978 TV movie A Love Affair, the Eleanor and Lou Gehrig story. He was the title character of Joe in the one and only season of the NBC sitcom Joe's World. And I love a Buck Rogers connection. He was in the second season episode Testimony of a Traitor. He was in all the big time pod faves like Murder She Dun, Sat Down, and She Wrote. Hopping on over to James Darren as his son David Barzak, he was born in Philadelphia and was a teen idol, actor, and recording artist. This guy was Moondoggy in the Gidget movies. Many of you listening may also remember him from Erwin Allen's The Time Tunnel as Dr. Tony Newman, Officer Jim Corrigan, and T.J. Hooker with William Shatner. And to continue that William Shatner Star Trek thing, he was in Deep Space Nine playing the Rat Pack style hologram named Vic Fontaine. And because he was a recording artist, that actually sparked some interest, that role in Deep Space Nine, in his recordings again. All right, if you want to get back to the breakdown and talk about Sabrina meeting um Anton Tarloff.
SPEAKER_10Yeah, which, you know, again is one of those things where she's like, I've always wanted to do this. Um, she talks a little bit, and then I believe she walks away with him. Rather than staying there and doing the job that she has just asked for, she just walks away. This is one of the first tent scenes. There are so many tent scenes in this particular episode, and I'm curious if they were all the same tent, which I think that they were. This tent, the tent that Kelly and Chris stay in, the tent that she stays in, it's the same background. It's just things kind of shuffled around. Helmet's tent. And I'm just curious, do you think it was the same tent set that they just kind of moved a few things around and then brought in actors?
SPEAKER_09Absolutely, because that saves you time on lighting and setup.
SPEAKER_10Now, you know, there's there's part of, if I may go on a bit of a tangent, because whenever they're undercover, they always use their real names. Why would that ever work? You know, other times they will use different names, but I really think it was for the audience's continuity so that they would keep track of what's going on. Because of course they're not gonna but you know, of course, at this time they could, it's not like people could pull up on their phone information about them. So, but even then I remember watching it. Why are they always using their real names? So even then it was kind of uh, oh, this is kind of odd. But we have our introduction of of Chris in the circus area, and she just wants to pose. She just wants to stand there and pose, which is a choice because this is the first time that we've seen Chris since they were in the office. When she's like, I can do anything, I can stand, I can pose. He's like, You want my job? She's like, Of course not. And he's like, Okay, you want to stand, you want to pose? I've got something for you. So, of course, he introduces her to helmet. Did I say helmet or helmet? Helm Helmut?
SPEAKER_09Helmet. Helmut? No, no, I help Helmet's, I think you got it.
SPEAKER_10And um, of course, Helmet, I I keep saying like she introduces him to her new partner. Oh, whoever this this this blonde man in in leather is where wearing a capped helmet, he is our knife thrower and axe thrower. So Janos says, Okay, you want to stand, you want to pose, why don't you pose here? And we get our first vision of Helmet, who I believe appears in various episodes through Charlie's Angels. But I love him here because I love the character.
SPEAKER_09At first glance, you wonder why is he wearing this studded leather whatnot? And then we realize part of his knife throwing act is also throwing axes, but we don't see that until later in the episode. His full costume is that of oh, the term just flew out of my brain. The the the executioner. So he's got the hood, that's his gig, that's his outfit.
SPEAKER_10Well, I believe, and I'm I'm going to go back a little bit because when we are first introduced his workplace, if you will, isn't there an axe already in the what what do you call it, the board that they that she would stand in front of? Because I believe there's an axe already there. I don't I can't remember if he threw it or not, but there is an axe there. So you do know that he does participate in lots of sharpie items.
SPEAKER_09Let's talk about him for just a minute. Dennis Miller plays Helmet Cross. Where to even start? This is this is gigantic. This episode is chock full of amazing guest star alerts. He played Tarzan in MGM's Tarzan the Ape-Man in 1959. While only one movie, it's notable because he was the first blonde actor to ever play Tarzan on screen. 6'4, athletic, and had actually been a UCLA basketball player before Hollywood. He was really known to folks as Duke Shannon on Wagon Train from 1961 to 1964. He was in more than a hundred episodes. And as Kevin alluded to, we see him again. He is in this episode. He comes back in Angels on Vacation in 1979, different character, and Stunt Women Angels in 1981, different character. Big Wonder Woman Alert! Miller plays Carl Schwartz in the Pied Piper, an episode of Wonder Woman that aired on October 21st, 1977. Circus of Terror aired October 19th, 1977. So American television viewers could see Denny Miller on Wednesday throwing knives at Cheryl Ed, and then on Friday with Linda Carter on Wonder Woman, two days apart. And there is a Dallas connection. He played Max Flowers in four episodes in 1984. He was the foreman running one of Cliff Barnes drilling operations.
SPEAKER_10Whoa isn't that a nice tidbit of information?
SPEAKER_09I love a Dallas connection. He was also the Gordon's fisherman for over a decade.
SPEAKER_10Okay, now that's important. That's noteworthy. That is fantastic.
SPEAKER_09That's big. He was in all the pod faves, including with Lee Majors and the Six Million Dollar Man. He appeared twice on Gilligan's Island as two different characters, and I bring that up mainly because he was once married to actress Kit Smith, and Kit Smith portrayed Ginger in the unerred Gilligan's Island pilot.
SPEAKER_10So those are that is a deep cut.
SPEAKER_09That is a deep cut. You are welcome.
SPEAKER_10Okay, let's all go, let's all go watch Kelly and see if she can actually jump um with her motorcycle. But I'm thinking, didn't she just land a plane in the previous episode? I think she'll be able to do a motorcycle okay without any issues.
SPEAKER_09Oh, we know she can drive a motorcycle because in the the TV pilot slash movie, she rode up to the vineyard estate on a motorcycle and did her famous hair toss out of that helmet.
SPEAKER_10Absolutely. And then she lands a plane, and then they're like, will she be okay jumping with a motorcycle? I'm like, I think she'll be just fine. No issues at all. Except, of course, the henchman near the ramp. And, you know, they're like, hey, what's going on? We've been trying to get people out of the circus, and they're having people come into the circus. And this is the exact point. If you watch the henchmen talking, if you look to the left, you will see the I don't want to call him the bulge from earlier, because that would be rude. But the background actor who displayed the bulge earlier is now shirtless in the background. And he is using a large mallet to pound something into the ground. And you will notice that he heathes back like he's about to like just ram this in. And then he gets to it and it goes tap. He heaves back. Which you can actually hear the sound from it. And I'm wondering if that was just maybe an audio issue that, you know, it was too loud, perhaps. And he was told, make it look like you're doing it, but then just tap it because it maybe interferes with the audio. But I just I just found that to be just priceless to watch that in the background. Because I don't even see what they're doing it, you know, what they're really talking about, because I'm just so fascinated by what he's doing in the background.
SPEAKER_09Shirtless in the background, yes. We still don't know the the henchmen's names are Otis and Reed. They're the two who fired on the the acrobat, the trapeze artist at the beginning of this show. And now they're tampering with Kelly's ramp. We know they're trying to sabotage and cause mischief and mayhem, but we don't know why. But they do express wonderment at why is he hiring on these new people? Uh and I I think they've already been directed by the person in charge of them to stop everything and go after these three new people. That is certainly implied later on in the episode.
SPEAKER_10Yes, it kind of adds to the, oh, are these the only ones behind it? But you get the impression, no, there is something else going on here, even behind the henchmen, which actually makes you feel really good because even though he made that shot at the beginning, that they don't look like particularly accomplished henchmen. But that's just me. I mean, I don't know. I mean, maybe they are. But as we see from Kelly getting ready for her jump, we do see a horse in the background, which when we hear horse sounds now, it's completely plausible because they have at this circus horses wandering around, as I guess circuses do. So she pulls up, she's about to make, you know, her initial jump showing, you know, that she's a woman and she can do anything and you know, proved Yanos. And of course, everyone, you know, all of our stars and all of our background people are standing here because they're so invested in Go Go Garrett.
SPEAKER_09Mm-hmm. And she crashes, the ramp collapses.
SPEAKER_10Well, yeah. So she jumps, she crashes, and like anyone does when they crash, they immediately hide their face down to the ground so you can't see who they are. And of course, everyone runs over, all the background actors because they're so curious. What I do have a hard time with is okay, she crashes, she said she checks all of her stuff, and uh, you know, because he's like, Why don't you check your equipment? She's like, I did. I don't need this, I'm just gonna leave. And then he's like, Do you want the job? When she did not exhibit anything other than crashing. And I think that that's really odd, which again goes back to I think he just has a thing for Kelly. Because why else would you hire her when she didn't even perform?
SPEAKER_09Good point. Excellent point.
SPEAKER_10If you look in the background, you can see that they're probably on a football field because there is a sign that this covered up in the back that looks like a score, like a scoreboard.
SPEAKER_09Absolutely. I love that catch. Thank you for thank you for bringing that up.
SPEAKER_10Um which I I think is I just I love that. I and again, it's it's never a knock against you know the episode or whatever. I just love noticing stuff like that because I think it's brilliantly done working with whatever they had and to set this up. I'm just I'm amazed that they could get all of this together. Yes. So after the catastrophe that we have with Kelly, every it's a meetup scene where everyone's together going, wow, what's going on? We, you know, obviously they could be on to us because of what happened with Kelly, or they could just be woman haters. We really don't know. And the next scene I think is interesting because we have one uh coming up, one of our cruising scenes where we have Helmut just standing there in his leather like he's cruising a bar. He's just standing there, he turns around, and he walks away. You know, they talk, they discuss about what's going on. Could be Helmut, could be not. But then they move on to Bosley doing his cruising move, watching people shovel hay. And we have the introduction of one of the most wonderful things in this episode, which is Tinklebell. And I did have to check this because I think naming her Tinklebell was a bit of a disservice because I thought it at first was Tinkerbell, which I understand maybe they couldn't do with Disney. But Tinkle, I mean, okay, fine. And you know, if you want to go that route. But she is enraptured with Bosley.
SPEAKER_14Hello. Bosley, John Bosley. Bosley John Bosley. Nice to run to it. Oh, I love the way it sounds when you say it, Bosley John Bosley.
SPEAKER_02Bosley, John Bosley.
SPEAKER_14That's what I said. Bosley, John Bosley.
SPEAKER_10Bosley, John Bosley, which I love how that's how she refers to him through the rest of the episode. Even when he tries to correct her, you can obviously see that he says Bosley, John Bosley. It's wonderful. It is just, I love it's the type of humor that's not laugh out loud, funny, but just adds to a character so much. So he has a little tay-to-tay with Tinklebell, who is obviously taken with him, which I have to say, who wouldn't be? Who would? And she shows interest. Are you married? Not lately. One of the best comebacks ever. Don't forget Tinklebell. That should go on a t-shirt. Okay, so they have their little meeting, and he's kind of rude there at the end, say hello to Peter Pan. But it does usher us into a very interesting scene, which I know you're going to go into detail probably with Marvin Kaplan, and you have a lot of information with that. But the actor who we have, and we see just his hair and his flowing locks, is Marvin Kaplan. And there is a very interesting connection, I think, to Erin Spelling here, because Aaron Spelling also produced Honey West in the 60s, which was a television show with Anne Francis where she was a lady detective, and she was very much Emma Peel coded because she would use karate chops or what have you. He was in an episode of Honey West, which again produced by Ellen's Aaron Spelling, and then he shows up here, produced by Aaron Spelling. So I just think that that little connection is quite interesting. That's very cool. I did not know that. And you know, there's not much that goes on here. I think it's more for comedic effect of, you know, have you seen anything? What's going on? Um, but again, that the hair is very distracting, and it must be something that someone got a big kick out of because later we see him with, you know, something over his head doing his curls.
SPEAKER_09So Yeah, he's giving himself a perm. So he's the circus magician, and we never see anything beyond his head. And it definitely some weird and very different comic relief in an episode of Charlie's Angels.
SPEAKER_10Which again, it's added in, it's quick, but I think it really helps. It helps the episode. When there's not a lot going on with the direct line, it's something else to latch onto, which is just fantastic. Because we move from there into Serena, Serena, I'm gonna keep doing that, to Sabrina and David in his manly disco coated bachelor tent, which I find hilarious because there he is in the tent set, which I'm sure, you know, is probably the same one. But for some reason, he has stereo equipment, he has liquor around, he has all this stuff for a perfect bachelor night. And if you even look on the floor, there are rugs there. And I did say floor, but on the bottom, everyone else's tent is grass. But for some reason, I don't know if he has a special tent, if there's something underneath the, you know, the rugs, because it just seems like if it's on grass, everything is gonna be a little, you know, poofy. But, you know, who knows? That's just how he travels, and you gotta respect that. What I really like here is because I think this is just one of those scenes where you show her getting interested in David more and more. And, you know, he's a possible suspect, and it always works when one of them is kind of is he a suspect? But I like him, he's interesting. But they get into a very interesting discussion about equality. And it goes back to the chicken Kiev and who makes it and who likes it, and you know, gender roles to a to a certain extent. And I like how they put all that together because there was one line that Serena says, which excuse me, Sabrina says, which is equality is everything. And I think that just kind of does it for the whole show. And it shows that yes, I want equality, but that doesn't mean I always want to be the one making dinner. Sometimes I want dinner made for me. And I think it's a very subtle way of just encapsulating what Charlie's Angels is. It's like, yes, we're women, we're out here doing this. We just want equality. We're not saying we're better, we just want equality. And I think that's just so interesting coming from a bachelor setup in a tent. But I I do like it. And even Serena, she even gets some lip lock in here. We move out of the tent, which when they come out of the tent, you can definitely see grass. So again, I'm on this grass rug thing, and where this tent actually is, and maybe he has some sort of tent entrance. I don't know. Anyway, so you know they're give a kiss goodnight because she's gonna go back to her own tent, but she bumps into another cruising, uh, see, third one, of Anton. And he just happens to be there watching them kiss and walk away, which is not creepy at all. Um, but in a way, it is a very sweet scene because you don't get any impression that he's behind, you know, any devious intent. They just talk and it's actually very, very sweet. I think. So, and then we move on to Sabrina's tent. And, you know, here she sits, you know, she's you know getting ready for you know her evening or whatever, and she hears something in her bed. Now, of course, which is terrifying. So she pulls back, and what I really appreciate about this is she sees a snake in her bed, but there's not that canned Charlie's Angels scream of, uh it is actually her just putting it, of course, the cover back on the snake and screaming help. Because you think, yes, she is an accomplished woman. She's not gonna go, you know, running away, even if she doesn't like snakes, but she, of course, you're gonna cover it up and scream for help. It just seemed so plausible to me that this would actually be how she responded. And so she screams help. And for some reason, only the stars of the episode seem to hear her. We have Chris Kelly, Bosley, and the owner of the circus. So all of the other circus background people must have been somewhere else. And of course, we have them all showing up. She's already bagged it up somehow, which is fantastic. And we have David and a captan. So evidently, some time has passed since Sabrina left, and he thought he would just get comfortable in a caftan.
SPEAKER_09He really did slip into something more comfortable, and it is a male caftan that would put Helen Roper to shame.
SPEAKER_10Which I have to say, oh, and I've got another Roper reference coming up, which I'm so glad that you made that. But yeah, he's he actually looks really good in it. And I just love it how when he's like, Oh, come sleep in my tent, and you get Kelly and Chris giggling like two little schoolgirls, like, oh, I know what that means. But she says, No, I'll I'll sleep on the on the sofa. You know, you take the bed. And I love how when they went out from the tent earlier and they go out again, they actually show the light like the flap is actually opening and shutting. Brilliant, I think, and not just walking off stage. And then we have Chris walking around, and she comes across Humet and Jano speaking German. And I love it how she's in the foreground, she sees them talking in the background, and instead of the ear closest to her so that she can hear them, she tosses her ear back that's closest to the screen so you can actually see her more. And I would think if she's trying to hear them, wouldn't she be trying to hear with the ear closest to them? This is one of those little Things. But when she does flip her hair back, I will say it's spectacularly done. But unfortunately, she doesn't speak any German and she's like, well, they're talking about something. I just don't know what it is. But she does decide to follow Helmut. And she follows him to the uh kitchen tent, if you will, the culinary tent, where they looks like they have, you know, things set up for, you know, dinners and what have you. And he's pouring himself a drink. And she sneaks around in the background. And you get the impression, I don't think she knows exactly what she's doing. I think she's just kind of following him. But she notices that after he takes a drink, he absent-mindedly just leaves that same cup there for her to take. So she takes the cup that he had just been holding, which we're thinking must be fingerprints because she actually puts something over the cup. Which again, I this is a very Jill move.
SPEAKER_09I enjoyed this scene a lot because it shows a detective at a detective agency doing something detective-y.
SPEAKER_10Indeed, indeed. Because, and again, it's on the fly because I don't think she knew that that was going to happen, but just in that quick moment, she's like, Oh, I see this, I can get this done, which I think is fascinating. Now, next up, we can you come up again, nothing really moving the story forward, but it is Bosley and Tinklebell. And talk about a miniature Mrs. Roper if you check out what Tinklebell is wearing. I think Mrs. Roper would have been very happy to have that on. So again, they just have a little talk talking about the snake, but again, it's more just interplay between between them. Nothing really to move the story along. But I love how she dressed up for him. I think that's fantastic. Though I will say the I don't think we can come over our differences, and she just comes back with what differences, I think is fantastic. Talk about equality. I do just another stab at that. But then of course, once Chris makes her or or absconds with the glass, she goes back to Kelly into their tent. And here comes a very interesting scene because Kelly and Chris are are in their tent and we see someone tying up the entrance to the tent. Obviously, something bad is going to happen, but we don't know who it is. And again, I think it's interesting because we know it's not the henchmen because we've already seen them. So obviously, this is this is someone new coming up. So they're tying the tent down so that it can't get out. Now, I know nothing about tents, so I don't know how the sides of the tent, did they just nail down the sides of the tent? I don't know because it seems like if something would happen, they could just scoot out under. But I'll follow the story where it leads. So I'm guessing they're going to be trapped inside. And again, this comes up to something where Kelly's like, it's us. Like maybe they edited out something is burning, and she's like, Oh, it's us. Because we see flames in the foreground, and okay, they run to the to the front of the tent and they can't get out. So they run back to the flames to try to get out that way, but they can't get out that way. And then Chris brilliantly says, Come on, we've got to get out of here because it's about to go up in flames. So they're trying, they can't get out. They have a beautiful shot of them, you know, against the flames. And luckily this time, more people seem to hear help than for Sabrina, because you've got a lot of people coming in to help them out now. And I think what's great here is Chris does remember, out of everything in the tent, to grab the cup with the fingerprints on it. So they get out, and we've got all of our background players coming to check on them and check on the tent, and the tent just goes up in flames. And if you look between the flames and the uh fire extinguishers, you'll see there's really nothing in the tent.
SPEAKER_09No, none of the furniture.
SPEAKER_10So, of course, you know, this is where we come to oh my god, something is going on. Of course, they they put out the tent. It's a very, you know, the background actors are even coughing. This is this is very intense. Sabrina and David are nowhere to be seen. Everyone in the circus came to check on them and their helps and their fire and horses winning. But Sabrina and David stayed in their tent. I wonder what they were doing. I wonder if they were having more chicken Kiev.
SPEAKER_09Who can say? But on that note, let's take a break. And when we come back, we're gonna find out and wrap up Circus of Terror.
SPEAKER_08Be an angel for a week! Fly to LA with two friends and do everything the angels do. And all the most, you'll learn to find a fighter and fly a horse, dumb drive, and cover up each all while looking fabulous because you'll have your own makeup artist at first level. Or play Charlie's Angels device with its clamor's angels t-shirt and TV Land's climb property set featuring the Charlie's Angels theme and TV Land being for each weekdates to TVLand.com or set the postcard of the T Direct.
SPEAKER_10Welcome back, Angels, from the break. And I've been talking so much that Chris is tired of hearing of me, or he has gotten himself untied, and we'll now be taking over the second half of the episode to see how our angels are going to get out of this predicament.
SPEAKER_09We have a lot going on, and one of the most confusing things is who started this fire and who's telling Otis and Reed what to do. We know for sure now it wasn't Otis and Reed, and we get a tiny bit more insight into what's happening and what's not happening because they talk about how Kelly and Chris were almost killed. They were hired to put the circus out of business, and they've been behind a lot, but they did not set fire to that tent. And their we don't know who boss instructed them no one was to get killed. So we know now for certain someone other than Otis and Reed are up to no good. Boz and the Angels have a debrief in the circus cookhouse. That's its official name. That was the common term back then for where meals were prepped and served. Think of it as a large mess tent you may have seen on mash. We learn a few things alongside the team. Helmet, the German knife thrower, isn't Helmet. Charlie ran the prints. Chris snagged off the glass he used to drink Jaegermeister. Jagermeister, by the way, is a German beverage I thought had a much longer history. It was not invented until 1934. It's very much in keeping with the part of the world this group of performers say they're they're coming from. Alright, we learn a few things alongside of the angels. Charlie ran the prints. The prints don't match helmet. Helmet is not helmet, which means Festa is not Festa.
SPEAKER_00It's an imposter! An imposter!
SPEAKER_09They also learn Otis and Reed, the two handymen at the heart of the mischief, are ex-cons. Will that lead anywhere? Don't know. Another thing we pick up on is Anton Tarlov, the master mime working with Sabrina, has a niece who used to work with this very circus, Nadia, and he referenced her in part one and how Sabrina reminded him of Nadia. Whatever her role with the circus was, she was severely injured in a fall on the job and eventually died of the injuries. Could Anton Tarloff have come to work for the circus? All these years later to seek revenge. While they're pondering the complexities of that, one of them brings up a final sum. The circus is doing okay at the moment, fairly well, in fact. If they were to sell it now to big circus, guess who would benefit the most financially? Not Janos, but his son David, Sabrina's current crush, and she is not pleased by that information at all. The conclusion is someone or some people know exactly who Boz and the Angels are and why they are there. And that's why all the chaos stopped for the general circus and began to focus on them and them alone. Dividing up areas on which to focus after this meeting in the cookhouse, Chris is tasked with investigating Knot Helmet's tent.
SPEAKER_02A beast adams.
SPEAKER_09And she promptly gets herself caught by Knot Helmet. Come on, Chris. You can do better. Ticked off because she's snooping, Knot Helmet decides it's practice time. He has Chris don her costume, the very feline club waitress costume Pharaoh wore and season one, episode eight, Lady Killer. Strapped into the target, Not Helmet aggressively begins throwing knives at Chris as he questions her harshly about her presence in the tent. Thankfully, Boz happens that way. He sees what's up, and he makes Not Helmet just uncomfortable enough to put an end, a sudden end, to this dangerous practice session. And Kevin, you know what this made me think of?
SPEAKER_10No, Chris. What did that make you think of?
SPEAKER_09Well, the first time we met and you threw a knife at me.
SPEAKER_10Oh, that's not true. It was several knives, not just one.
SPEAKER_09Well, it's ancient history. It's water under the bridge, so they say. It made me think of you you mentioned tropes earlier in the episode. This knife throwing thing is definitely a trope, so I did a little bit of research because I care. Because why? I'm an educator. Uh we see this trope in a November 1953 episode of I Love Lucy. We see it again in 1963 in an episode of The Avengers. And I remember quite well seeing this in a 1980 episode of Laverne and Shirley, with Laverne as the target. We also saw this trope on the monkeys, and here's some fun facts. It was a staple of those CBS Circus of the Stars shows, including the very first Circus of the Stars, in which Lynn DeCarter was the target. How's that for a callback?
SPEAKER_10Oh my, that's that's a wonderful reference.
SPEAKER_09It gets better because in 1979, Charlene Tilton, Lucy Ewing from Dallas, was the target. And they loved it so much, CBS did, they wrote it into two episodes of Murder She Done Sat Down as she wrote in 1986 and 1994. It's also an episode of American Horror Story Freak Show in 2014, and I bring that up because it's a traveling carnival, currently stationary, because they're in rehearsal just like this traveling circus carnival, and Jessica Lang is doing the throwing. So I thought all of that was fun. The scene changes, and we find out who Otis and Reed have truly been working for, and it's the master mime, who's now the mastermind. See what I did there, Kevin. Anton Tarloff. He is trying to get revenge on the circus for his niece's death many years ago because he feels Janos was being cheap and was using faulty equipment and is therefore personally responsible. And obviously he's the one who set the fire, as he feels Kelly, Chris, and Sabrina were hired by Janos to get the scoop on what's happening at the circus. And Anton doesn't want to be discovered, not until the circus is out of business, and he has avenged Nadia's death. He orders Otis and Reed to kill the new girls. How's that for a twist? Because everyone's getting gussied up for dress rehearsal time, not Helmet, is putting on his executioner's outfit, and that tells us, oh God, now we get why he was wearing that partial thing the other day. He's an executioner, that's a shtick, it all makes sense. Goon Otis comes in and knocks him out and swipes his outfit. Remember how I mentioned seconds ago it has a mask? And we realize, oh my god, Otis the goon is going to pretend to be not helmet to take care of Chris, and not Helmet will get all the blame. Thankfully, for some unknown reason, Bosley comes into Not Helmet's tent, finds him, kind of brings him to, and the scene cuts to the knife throwing rehearsal. Chris is in her Jill Monroe outfit from the Feline Club. She's up against her target, and Otis is just throwing knives like he is on a Ginsu infomercial and not Helmet.
SPEAKER_10I was gonna say, isn't it amazing how Helmet and who is the uh henchman to Otis.
SPEAKER_09Otis is this guy.
SPEAKER_10They have the exact same body and arm structure that she would have not been clued in that that's not Helmet.
SPEAKER_09100%. If I remember the guest star breakdown correctly, one of them is 6'4, the other is six five. They both have lightish hair, same face structure. It worked out well. It worked out well. Well, not for Chris. Well, it did because Boz and not Helmet get Otis, they yeet off his mask, and Otis confesses everything. He and Reed were hired by Tarlov. It's all about Tarloff's niece. And Tarloff gave the order last night to take care of the angels, and he's about to kill Sabrina during their dress rehearsal. And now the big question is, well, Chris is okay, but are they going to make it to Sabrina in time? And what's the plan for Kelly? Well, we know, of course, they make it to Sabrina in time, but barely. Sabrina and Anton are doing their little mime sword fighting thing, and it's supposed to be with prop swords that that are fencing swords, but ooey and gooey and rubbery, and that's part of the fun, and everyone will just be regaled with laughter, I'm sure, when the real thing happens. And Anton has the real sword. But what saves Sabrina is not the good timing of her colleagues, but it's Anton's guilt and inability to go through with the plan, even though he's got the real sword. He felt too bad. Much like Otis did, he explains about the niece and all the things and tells them they have to run as fast as they can to where Kelly is practicing her motorcycle act because Reed is going to shoot her. And we see all of this play out, but of course they make it to Reed in time, and of course they knock the gun out of his hands. We know he's a good shot because of that very first scene at top of show. And the angels are safe. We've figured it out. And this week, as we wrap up and conclude, it's not your usual debrief at the Townsend Agency gathered around their plush 70s furniture, but at the circus' cookhouse, you have Janos, who's now been explain David has explained everything to Janos and who the Angels and Bosley are, his son David, you have not helmet, you have Boz and the Angels, and they're talking through all that's happened, Anton's motivations surrounding his niece, and how not helmet came to Janos while performing in Canada and asked for asylum. And this shocks David. David didn't even know. So that's sort of kind of neat and a cute little bookend. David hired the angels with his father not knowing, and his father, uh, months or years before, took Not Helmet in while in Canada because he asked for political asylum, and David didn't know. And as everyone moves, and boy do I know you have a thing or two to say about this, and I can't wait. And as everyone moves to the cookhouse's dance floor, because don't they all have one of those? Tinklebell makes her final move on Boz as the scene freezes. Alright, Kevin, please tell everyone, you are such a good background looky lure catcher. You noticed Major McMoose Knuckle. You noticed his poor hammering stakes into the ground skills. Um, you noticed how the extras were milling about wearing the same costumes, whether it was night or day. Tell them what you noticed.
SPEAKER_10Okay. So the dance floor. As we see everyone seated around this l you know, luxury setup, which is, you know, disco tent, I guess. There is a lovely lass in the background who is wearing jeans and a blue uh some sort, it looks like a blue blur shirt. I don't think we've seen her before. Maybe, maybe we have. She is flailing up, she flails down, she moves to the left, she moves to the right. I don't think there's any music playing because normally when they do that, there's no music playing. And she is making moves like uh like it is a I I don't know what she thinks is playing, but everyone around her is just kind of like moving back and forth and left and right. She is having a time of it. And I kind of get the impression she was like a producer's like daughter or girlfriend, and she's like, I want to be in a scene, and they're like, fine, put her in the background, let her do what she wants. And she's just like moving her hands around and down and up, and uh, it's just it's amazing to watch. It is absolutely amazing. Only to be broken by the spell of Tinklebell bringing her own box to Bosley.
SPEAKER_09It it reminded me of the Elaine dance from Seinfeld, but on acid and K and all the things and some nitrous oxide all at once.
SPEAKER_10Normally, and also the Grease 2 scene of Cool Rider, where Michelle Pfeiffer is dancing around and she, you know, is finishing up, and people are talking, and she's still just dancing off in the background, and it's like it's wonderful to watch. It's just fantastic.
SPEAKER_09I say, like Mama Cass taught us all, you gotta make your own kind of music, sing your own kind of song, and that's what this background extra is doing. I love I saw something you didn't. This particular extra appeared at least a couple of other times. Once in the scene where all the all the employees came running over to Kelly when she crashed. And then again during the canvas tent fire, she was part of that group.
SPEAKER_10Oh, fantastic. Like I said, I I think I was I was so concentrating on some of the the terrific um apparel that she probab I just probably glanced right over her, which is my defect, not not hers at all, because she makes this scene. She is just fantastic. Um, I love it. I absolutely love it.
SPEAKER_09Since the episode ended with Tinklebell making her final move on boss, I believe you have a little guest star alert about Tinklebell.
SPEAKER_10Oh, I do. And while I'm uh accessing that information, I would say that I think a spin-off series of Tinklebell and John Bosley, John Bosley would have fared very, very well. Patty Maloney is Tinkerbell. Before her Hollywood career, Maloney performed with Ringling Brothers and Bontiman Bailey and other Carnival Circus productions. At 3'11 inches, Maloney played honk on Sid Mardycroft's far-out space nuts in 1975 alongside Bob Denver and Chuck McCann. She appeared in nine episodes. And there is another Gillings Island connection, and let's not forget Jim Backus from Angels on Ice. And she celebrated Life Day with Chewbacca and his family in the infamous 1978 Star Wars holiday special, She was Lumpy, Chewbacca's son. And again, she was in three episodes of Buck Rogers. She was Tina, the robot waitress for uh uh in Cruise Ship to the Stars, and two episodes as Twickie, ordinarily played by Felix Scylla. One episode of Star Trek Voyager, and a big Disney Alert as she worked on Welcome to Pooh Corner and Dumbo Circus in the 1980s. The Addams Family movie in 1991, Rota, just 11 days after Circus of Terror, eh? The Brady Bunch Hour, a Sid and Marty Croft connection, the Bay City Rollers, another Sid and Marty Croft connection, performed from time to time in a defunct Atlanta theme park, The World of Sid and Morty Croft. Oh. I knew you would love that. Oh, that is fantastic. And to bring it back around to Marvin Kaplan, who uh not Marvin Kaplan, but the guy who played the hamburger. Yeah. Because all of that stuff was taken from Sid and Morty Croft. The um because Sid Marty Croft had set up um a commercial for McDonald's, which I believe they did not use, but they took the artwork from Sid and Morty Croft, and that's why we have the characters and the backgrounds that look so Sid and Morty Croft in their marketing, because they actually uh McDonald's took it from Sid Marty Croft.
SPEAKER_09Get out. I have noticed that and thought about it and wondered about that. Get out of town.
SPEAKER_12You need a clean.
SPEAKER_10I'm telling you, when you're drinking and it's 3 a.m. and you're looking through YouTube, you find the most amazing things. Now, of course, all of this is allegedly, in case anyone is listening and I've made a mistake in my video.
SPEAKER_09Allegedly. Kevin, that was informative. I laughed, I cried, I learned things about McDonald's and the hamburglar and Sid and Marty Croft. I want to remind everyone, Kevin lives in Atlanta, and he's shown me Turner broadcasting that was then CNN, that's now empty, that has that. Like it's still there. You can see those empty theme park floors. It's very ooky and spooky, and I want to go in there. But if Colby were here, Colby would say, Goons, Kevin, tell us about the two goons.
SPEAKER_10Um, there was such a flow of information from Tinklebell, but I'll have to stop that and go on to Tom Reese as Reed, the one charged with killing Kelly at the end of the episode. His character, Reed, and the character named Otis are the two circus laborers providing the muscle behind the sabotage. He, like Denny Miller, was a tall one, six foot three inches. A Wonder Woman Alert, Wonder Woman vs. Gargantua in the first season in 1976, a series regular on NBC's Ellery Queen, with Elvis in Elvis' attempt at a serious acting role in Flaming Star in 1960. He was Dowding Thomas in 1965's The Greatest Story Ever Told, along with huge names like Max von Seidel, Charlton Heston, Dorothy McGuire, Claude Rains, Jose Ferrer, Angela Lansbury, Sidney Portier, Shelley Winters, and John Wayne. He was in the 1971 classic Vanishing Point, and tons of pod fates who mentioned every week like the $6 million Man and the Twilight Zone. Fun fact, like several other guest stars, he studied with Lee Strasberg. And get ready, he was born in Chattanooga in 1928. I did not know that. In Circus of Terror, the other baddie is six foot five-inch former basketball player Reed Morgan as Otis. Two Charlie's Angels appearances, this one, and the 1979 two-parter Love Boat Angels as a different character. Two Alfred Hitchcock connections with Colby enjoys the 1960s Alfred Hitchcock Presents and 1963's The Alfred Hitchcock Hour. A Twilight Zone Classics, Season 1's What You Need, Back to the Future in 1985 as a Policeman, Ten Appearances in Gunsmoke as a different character between 1959 and 1974. Big fun fact. He was the very first actor to wear a professional Rick Baker movie creature suit in 1971's Octoman. Wait, another Elphus Connection. 1967's Easy Come, Easy Go. Marvin Kaplan as Zobar, the magician that Bosley runs into. Most of you will recognize him as Henry, the glasses wearing telephone repairman who was a regular customer on Alice. He debuted in that same year that this episode aired. He appeared overall in 82 episodes of Alice. He was a voice in the Hannah Barbera cartoon Top Cat, which was referenced in Angels on Ice. Speaking of Top Cat, Marvin Kaplan was in It's a Mad, Mad, Mad Mad World alongside Arnold Stang, the voice of the actual Topcat. Love that. Disney Connections.
SPEAKER_09Yes, ma'am. Did I say cat? No, I'm like, yes, ma'am, you did. I'm just excited about these Disney connections.
SPEAKER_10Oh, oh. And Disney Connections. The original Freaky Friday in 1976 narrated many of the your favorite fairy tales read-along records. His big screen debut was with Tracy and Hepurn in 1949's Adam's Rip.
SPEAKER_09He's great. I was so tickled to see him in this episode, even though he had that very, very weird, weird, weird role. And the comedy was very different than what we see in most Charlie's Angels episodes, but he was just neat. He was just a little tack-on. He was a little filler.
SPEAKER_10Well, he was like half the filler that most other actors are.
SPEAKER_09And in at my age, I'm thinking a lot about filler. And that, everyone, was Charlie's Angels Season 2's Circus of Terror. Special thanks to our incredible guest star, television historian, and all around knows everything about everything. Kevin Wood. Kevin, how can I ever thank you for this time tonight?
SPEAKER_10Well, never give me that introduction again because I don't think I can live up to it. I just want to say thank you so much for letting me be part of the caseload this week and offering whatever I could just to make things a little bit more, you know, interesting.
SPEAKER_09Will you promise me you will come back and join us again for a future episode?
SPEAKER_10If you ask me, I will always be available.
SPEAKER_09Oh, that is very kind.
SPEAKER_10However, however, here it comes. I think that's the way I'd like to go.
