Heads up angels. While our podcast is suitable for all ages, keep in mind these episodes were produced in a different era and may include scenes of danger, crime, or themes some listeners may find sensitive or outdated. When doing our rewatch, we do our very best to discuss everything with care, context, and compassion, and always with a love for the show and respect for our listeners.
SPEAKER_10Last time on Good Morning Charlie. And coming up.
SPEAKER_04Well, you know, Bob, that's where people go to learn how to touch and feed.
SPEAKER_08Oh yes, I've heard of it. Like adults in the bottle.
SPEAKER_12I am one of your hosts, Chris Berryman. And with me is the ginger who just won't quit, Sassy Eyebrow himself, freshly back from vacation like a newborn Easter peep.
SPEAKER_10It is. Hi everybody, it is Colby Smith. And with a long sigh, she's back. I am glad to be back. I am so sorry that I was out for Circus of Terror. Chris's wish came true. I was, in fact, riddled with an infection. I received some sort of communicable disease. So uh at least for this once in his life, he got what he wished for.
SPEAKER_12And those of you who are our beloved patrons on Patreon know we also experienced yet again some technical difficulties, and we did all we could last week and just could not uh conquer a certain hurdle, but we have now. Colby, bless your soul stealing, ginger heart. You try to have some time for yourself. You arrange this whole hoop-de-doo review, and instead of being able to enjoy yourself fully, you are you are hit with any number of diseases. Well, you're a victim. You're the victim here.
SPEAKER_01I'll be the victim all your life.
SPEAKER_10It is not all bad. Alaska was uh just breathtaking. It is so beautiful everywhere you turn. It's just one breathtaking view after another.
SPEAKER_12Is it like looking at my hair tonight? Because it's a really good hair day. It's day two hair.
SPEAKER_10It is. The mountains are cloaked in fog. Well, listen. It's just really beautiful.
SPEAKER_12No, stop right now. Stop right now, Colby. I have a little surprise planned for you. You do not know this is going to happen, but throughout tonight's breakdown of Angel in Love, I am going to be interrupting you with Cruise Questions.
SPEAKER_10It's funny that you say that because I have some questions for you during this episode.
SPEAKER_12I won't answer them because it's time for our very first cruise question. And Colby, you have exactly 60 seconds to answer.
SPEAKER_07Ooh, that's a long time. All right.
SPEAKER_12Well, for you, you've not even gotten through the subject of your sentence and made your way to the predicate. I'm going to start the timer after I ask the question. What was the best excursion you took on your cruise? Go.
SPEAKER_10I would say the best excursion that I took. Uh, we sort of charted a van, and this tour guide took us around, I want to say, the city of Skagway, I believe was our second city. She showed us uh the indigenous trees and plants to the area. She talked about the indigenous people of the area, uh, who, of course, still live there. Uh there was only 14 miles of paved road. There's a volcano, which was really beautiful to see. Um, that was probably the best excursion that I really enjoyed. And the downtown area of Skagway. Um, beautiful, picturesque. Loved it.
SPEAKER_12What sort of indigenous trees did you see?
SPEAKER_10I think it is the blue spruce.
SPEAKER_12It might have some other Alright, you're done. We'll never know. The best part of that answer is you sort of rented a bus. I don't know how you sort of rent one. But who cares? We'll never know. Because it's time for today's assignment. It's season two, episode eight. You've been waiting for it. I've been waiting for it. Sabrina Duncan's been waiting for it. It's Angel in Love.
SPEAKER_10I think we have a couple of Patreon members who have been waiting for it who really like this episode. Here's your case briefing. A murder has happened at a human growth resort named Utopia West, and the angels are called upon to investigate. While undercover as a writer, Sabrina finds herself falling for suspect, Doug O'Neill. Does our angel find love or does she only find danger?
SPEAKER_12And here's your super secret intel. First of all, my drag name is Utopia West. Secondly, the original air day for this episode, October 26th, 1977.
SPEAKER_09So many nights I'd sit by my window.
SPEAKER_12Fifty minutes in length, story editor and producer, Edward J. Lexo, written by a couple of names we've not heard, believe it or not. Skip Webster and Jock McKelvy. Skip Webster is a writer and a producer. He's done many things with many errand spelling connections like The Rookies and Fantasy Island. Lots of TV series we love to talk about on the pod. Harry O, as a matter of fact, which ties in with Charlie's Angels, Wonder Woman, Brady Bunch. Jock, I wish my name were Jock. McElview. He was an actor and a writer. He has a very short list of credits, but there's a reason. And it includes two episodes of Charlie's Angels. He also did work on Chips and the Rookies, but this is a pseudonym for actor and writer George Hills. Why did he use a pseudonym for this and for these other credits? We don't know, Colby. We don't know. So I wish you would stop looking at me like I'm going to tell you. You can see right here in the script. I don't know. It was directed by Paul Stanley. Directed five episodes, by the way, of Charlie's Angels, not just this one. Paul Stanley also did episodes in season three and four. And then a season two episode of Dallas Colby. And it was a great episode. It was the one where Pam, you know, Victoria Principal, she is married to Bobby Ewing, played by Patrick Duffy, and we've talked about that many times. Pam's first husband shows up, and everyone's teeth fall out of their heads because her husband says he's still married to her, just like the Brady Bunch sequel.
SPEAKER_09Oh my, why?
SPEAKER_12When Shelley? Yes, when Timmy steal that horse?
SPEAKER_09Oh Mike, how?
SPEAKER_12That's so much information to take in. Let's take a little break, and we'll be back shortly.
SPEAKER_14I only did what any guy do in my place. The first chance I got, I came to find my wife.
SPEAKER_02I'm not your wife.
SPEAKER_14You keep saying that. You want to see proof? Here. Look.
SPEAKER_02A copy of our marriage license.
SPEAKER_14Ed Haynes, Pamela Barnes. I know it's as war as Mexico, but it's legal.
SPEAKER_02We were just kids. I was underage.
SPEAKER_14You weren't, and neither was I. I was shipped out to Nan the next day.
SPEAKER_02The marriage was annulled.
SPEAKER_14You wouldn't do that.
SPEAKER_02You didn't get the annulment papers? I wrote to you myself trying to explain.
SPEAKER_14The mail wasn't very regular in North Vietnamese prison camps.
SPEAKER_02Oh, Ed, I'm sorry. I didn't know.
SPEAKER_12We are back and ready to begin the debrief of Angels in Love. Colby's gonna take the lead this week. Oh, we just lost half our listeners. But wait, stay, because it's time for another cruise question. Colby, let me get my timer up. What was your favorite part about the room you stayed in?
SPEAKER_10I will say that the shower pressure was actually really decent. And there was always hot water. Uh that is probably well, no, okay, sorry. I take it back. It had to be the balcony because the views were always so beautiful.
SPEAKER_12What do you mean by shower pressure when you got in there? Did it squeeze you?
SPEAKER_10The water pressure, it was um it was, you know, consistent. The hot water was always there. Definitely a uh necessity, so I'm very appreciative for it.
SPEAKER_12Was it a little Juliet balcony or was it a full tilt boogie balcony?
SPEAKER_10It was a full balcony.
SPEAKER_12And it looked out on what side?
SPEAKER_10We were on the starboard side.
SPEAKER_12Which means what? I'm not a witch.
SPEAKER_10On the right, port is left. There are so many boating Charlie's Angels episodes. You better learn this. When when we get to boating angels, you better know.
SPEAKER_12I'm gonna start timing everything Colby does. This has been the best day of my life. All right, Colby. Debrief.
SPEAKER_10A man is seen tightening the screw while holding folded bills in his mouth. As he puts away his tools, we see an unknown man stalking outside. The man with the cash opens the cabin door only to be met by someone he knows. He apologizes for leaving this man because he thought he was dead, but insists he still has all the cash. A fight ensues and then a gunshot. A woman hears the shot and runs to the cabin to find a man dead.
SPEAKER_12I want to point something out quickly. These are some really bad day-for-night shots, and they won't be the last ones we see. We see some later in the episode with Kelly and Chris, but oh my Lord. My stars. My stars.
SPEAKER_03My stars.
SPEAKER_10Charlie has just provided the details to Bosley and the Angels. The client is Hildy Slater. You may remember the wonderful Madame Dorian from season one, episode 11, The Seance. She wants the Townsend agency to find her nephew's killer. Kelly will be taking over for the victim Frank Slater. He was a general factotum employee of Utopia West. Chris will be the new Tai Chi instructor due to some of the other employees leaving out of fear of a killer being still on the loose. Bosley and Sabrina will be paying customers. Bosley on a new path with diet and exercise. And Sabrina, a writer, interested in the business and its recent circumstances.
SPEAKER_12Hey, I need a question answered for clarification. I'm a little confused. Kelly is taking over for whom?
SPEAKER_10Frank Slater. Frank Slater is the nephew of the owner, and he was sort of a general handyman at Utopia West.
SPEAKER_12But she took over for Frank Slater, who was what?
SPEAKER_10The victim.
SPEAKER_01I'll be the victim all your life.
SPEAKER_10I really particularly love when Bosley corrects Charlie that he is not on a diet and that his weight is perfect. And then Charlie says, Yes, your weight is perfect for Karim Abdul Jabbar, who we may have just previously mentioned in another episode. Which makes me so happy. Because now I'm gonna insert some more airplanes.
SPEAKER_11What was it we had for dinner tonight?
SPEAKER_03Well, we had a choice steak or fish.
SPEAKER_11Yes, yes, I remember I had lasagna, yeah.
SPEAKER_10We are now at Utopia West, and Chris is chatting with Hildi about scheduling, as Lon Moulton is introduced as the stable operator, and I guess kind of a horn dog. As Lon ogles Chris, we then meet Lorraine Fielding, Hildi's right hand who shares an uncomfortable glance as Lon continues to comment on Chris's attractiveness.
SPEAKER_12Guest star alert, Colby's already mentioned the wonderful actress Carol Cook.
SPEAKER_10We discussed her.
SPEAKER_12We discussed her during season one, the seance. She was a wonderful character actress, big buddies with Lucille Ball. She was on tons of pod faves, as well as 16 candles. We also mentioned she was in a very sordid wedding and did a lot of incredible work during the AIDS crisis, actually before Elizabeth Taylor got involved. Disney connection, I do not believe this was pointed out last time. She voiced Pearl, the owner of the Patch of Heaven Farm and Ranch in 2004's Home on the Range.
SPEAKER_10Sabrina and Doug sort of stumbled towards the registration desk. Hilde shares that.
SPEAKER_00And like the sign says, deposit your inhibitions. Around here, we just let it all hang out. Now I'm not going to say too much about rules because we only have one. Be nice to each other. And uh whether you go to classes or not is really up to you. We don't have a truant officer. What about clothing? What do we wear? You're the journalist, aren't you? Yes. Well, here at Utopia, you wear whatever turns you on. Now, if it happens to be the altogether, well, that's okay too. But watch out for the splinters and try not to frighten the horses.
SPEAKER_10Since this episode is titled Angel in Love, let's take a moment to comment on the men as much as they comment on the wonderful women of this show. Doug does indeed have like a handsome face. Uh in my personal opinion, however, Lon's physique is a little bit more appealing. Uh his hair, maybe not quite so much. Those are some pretty thick sideburns. Uh, I know that it was the look at the time, but uh the sideburns are not doing it for me. But I do kind of love, sort of bringing it back to today, that mustaches are kind of in vogue a little bit, maybe. I'm sure not everyone shares the same opinion, and not everyone can pull them off, but I kind of like that mustaches are having a moment. Lon tries to put the moves on Kelly and scare her by telling her that she's in the murder cabin. Meanwhile, Sabrina and Doug have another unsuccessful moment together as night begins to fall at Utopia West. Lon is now really getting some screen time. I'm not necessarily complaining because he does fall out a pair of jeans. He is under cover of darkness, back in the murder cabin, fishing around. His efforts, however, are thwarted because he can hear Chris and Kelly returning. To avoid detection, he puts on a stocking and hides in the closet, waiting for the right moment to escape. And I'm gonna be bold and go out on a limb and say that any man who carries around a stocking to hide his face is probably not a good guy. He wrestles with the angels and manages to flee without being unmasked. And in this scene, I want to give Chris her props. She immediately jumps on lawn after he pushes Kelly out of the way. She did not hesitate. They were in danger, and Chris jumped into action. And even though she only weighs 60 pounds, she she she gave it her best.
SPEAKER_12My thought on that was that's Chris Monroe's go-to in the beauty pageant. Remember when she just she leapt off the Miss Chrysanthem stage? She weighs all of 47 pounds and has one move. I will leap on your back. It's like having a chipmunk leap on your back. What is that going to do?
SPEAKER_10They might just flick her off, but I mean it she's uh she's an angel. She's getting in there and doing the dirty work.
SPEAKER_12Guest Star Alerts. Lorraine Fielding is played by Amanda McBroom. She is an accomplished singer-songwriter as well as actress. She is best known for writing The Rose, the title song of the film in 1979, a hit for Bette Midler, and Amanda won a golden globe for. She's had her songs performed by other artists like Barry Manilow, Betty Buckley, Donnie Osmond, oh Donnie Osmond, Anne Murray, oh Anne Murray.
SPEAKER_10I love that you're owing Donnie Osmond and Ann Murray, and I'm like, Betty Buckley.
SPEAKER_12Well, I liked her too, but I was going to try to refrain because I've talked about it.
SPEAKER_10Oh, I love Betty Buckley. She's so amazing.
SPEAKER_12She's great, but when then when I got to Donnie Osmond and Ann Murray, I couldn't hold it in anymore. And she's been in a whole bunch of pod faves, and we always like to point out Star Trek connections for one of our favorite listeners, and she's been in an episode of The Next Generation. Lon is played by Tom Simcox, born in Jersey, has over 60 TV and film credits, a fun one for Colby, the Alfred Hitchcock Hour. He has a great Disney connection. He was in The Wonderful World of Disney, a 1977 episode of The Ghost of Cypress Swan. And a 1980 series, The Secret of Lost Valley. He was in two episodes. And Lon was also lucky enough to get to film scenes in the murder cabin. And God, Colby, if I could have anything for the holidays, if I could tell Santa what I wanted, it would be a high metabolism and a murder cabin. Wouldn't that be great? He was in the movie Piranha. His co-star, William Smith, credits Tom for saving his life during the filming of Piranha. Colby had that little fact written down, and I wanted to know how Oh my how? I thought, oh my god, was it CPR? Was it? He made he made a splint out of twigs on the set. Was it what was it? Did he have heat stroke and did he get covered in wet blankets by his co-star William Smith? No, no, no. William Smith was on set, opened up a can of Vienna sausages, and the top sliced his arm open, and Tom helped wrap it and apply pressure when they made their way, and it was a hot minute for them to get.
SPEAKER_10I was gonna say, right, they were on the river very far from the nearest town. Uh, so he did do something.
SPEAKER_12No, don't act like you scout locations for a living. My point is that's what you get for drinking Vienna sausage water and eating Vienna sausages. You know, everybody, Colby saved my life once. One time we were at a place together and I had to go to the bathroom really, really bad, and I thought my bladder was gonna burst, and he said the bathroom's right over there. That's about the equivalent of this saving your life story.
SPEAKER_10A new day dawns. Chris is very patiently trying to teach Bosley Tai Chi. Bosley is being a bit obstinate. He is positioned beside a woman he is trying to get a look at uh because he is not following instruction very well.
SPEAKER_16Good. Now we are going to turn our right foot to the east. To the east, Mr. Bosley. For those of you who don't know where east is, it's the right. Good. Now, as we do turn our foot, we also rotate our hips, shoulders, and head as far to the east as possible. Bending those knees. Uh, Mr. Bosley. To the east, to the right. Oh, very good.
SPEAKER_10And I mention this because I believe this woman who we are seeing on screen, her name is Sis Rundle. She was Cheryl Ladd's stand-in, and she is in more Charlie's Angels episodes than any other extra or day player. She is in 16 episodes. Um, I'm gonna do my best to keep a tally when we see her because it is a lot. I believe that this is the second time she appears on the show. She is the train engineer with Charlie in Circus of Terror. No. Uh huh. So she puts the little drink on the little. Toy train that Choo Choo's around to uh refresh his drink. I also enjoy that we are seeing more of Bosley in this episode, and he will be up to more antics later. Hildi is teaching a workshop on primal communication, whatever that means. She instructs everyone to split up into pairs and take time getting acquainted through touch. And as luck would have it, Sabrina and Doug are the only two left without a partner and are stuck together. We get we get this really lovely awkward moment where like Sabrina touches Doug's hand nice and uh innocent, but Doug is then instructed to trace Sabrina's lips with his finger, which somehow turns into just pushing his fingers into her mouth. So my first question for Chris is now that we've met Kate Jackson and we could pretend that we have a relationship with her, what do you think is going on in Kate Jackson's head while Doug's fingers are in her mouth?
SPEAKER_12I, having met her once and shared a tender moment, know exactly what she was thinking of. God, I am suffering for my craft today.
SPEAKER_10You don't think she was thinking, why do his hands smell like Vienna sausages?
SPEAKER_11Oh my god, that's the funniest thing you've said since the day we met.
SPEAKER_10Do you think we can blame this blossoming romance on Hildi, forcing them to touch each other?
SPEAKER_12I can't talk about it because if I ever had to go to one of these workshops, I would fling myself down a cavernous ravine first.
SPEAKER_10As night sets in, poor Bosley is moping around on his herb diet, and we get a little filler scene where he meets Audrey, a somewhat kooky woman, busy meditating, who introduces Bosley to Vital Power. Sabrina and Doug are enjoying getting to know each other by a roaring fire with some wine.
SPEAKER_05So you were a downhill racer?
SPEAKER_15Raising harassment. Learned how to ski before I could walk.
SPEAKER_04Well, were you any good? Very good. Modest?
SPEAKER_15You asked, I answered. I might have even had a chance on the on the circuit. But Vietnam came along, and there was not a whole lot of really good skiing in Vietnam.
SPEAKER_10What I find interesting is that we don't really get anything from Sabrina and her having to sort of elaborate on her cover. It's totally possible to share some truths about your history and intermix it with your cover. But unfortunately, in this episode, it's all one-sided. We don't get any information from Sabrina. And this really could have been an opportunity to flesh out Sabrina a little bit more. Especially since in the previous episode, there is another love interest who uh I think is a better love interest than Doug. But anyway. Chris and Kelly are mentioning that Sabrina is acting a bit out of character and has been MIA today when they come upon Lon and Lorraine macking feet away from their cabin. I mentioned this because apparently this is not where Kelly is supposed to be.
SPEAKER_03We didn't realize this was Lover's Lane.
SPEAKER_08You have a way of showing up where you don't belong.
SPEAKER_03Well, that's why I'm with Chris. She's giving me belonging lessons. That man needs a distemper shop.
SPEAKER_10And I keep thinking, you're making out feet away from their cabin. Where should they be? So another question to Chris. This is like a little bit spicy, I guess, for Charlie's Angels. And you, of course, can choose not to answer. Have you made out at any of your workplaces?
SPEAKER_12Are you high? You don't piss for you eat. No. But I have a question for you. In fact, it's a cruise question. Colby, what was your favorite feature activity thing to do on the cruise ship?
SPEAKER_10What was my favorite activity? Um, we met a really lovely couple, uh, my friends and I. Um, actually, hold on. I'm sorry, because I don't want to forget their names. I don't know if I should say their names really. Uh, Natalia and what was his name? Oh, I have it in my phone. Hold on just a second.
SPEAKER_12I think you're getting confused. You're thinking about those two ice skaters in Angels on ice.
SPEAKER_10That was like Ingrid and whatever.
SPEAKER_12Sure, that you remember, but your new BFFs.
SPEAKER_10Right. Johnny and Natalia. Okay, will you ask me again? Can we restart?
SPEAKER_12No, this is your time. No, we're not restarting. You best hurry up and finish what your favorite thing was.
SPEAKER_10We met a really lovely couple on the cruise. Their names uh were Johnny. Time. Chris and Kelly receive an unwelcome gift in their cabin. A fake bomb with a note reading, the next one will be real. Are we meant to believe Lon sent this? He does know the money is somewhere in the cabin, but I don't believe Lon is smart enough to put together a real bomb, let alone a fake one. Is someone else watching the cabin that we're unaware of? Kelly and Chris have two extremely heavy-handed hints that this cabin is important. It's an early morning dip in the hot tub for the Angels as they discuss getting close to Lon to determine if he's doing this alone or perhaps with Lorraine's help. Sabrina mentions she is late for a breakfast date with Doug as she leaves Chris and Kelly, who suggests looking into Doug because he also fits the description of their cabin crawler, and that Sabrina may be blind to this realization.
SPEAKER_16Doug O'Neill. You know, he's in one of my classes. He could be our midnight marauder. He's a six-footer.
SPEAKER_03Not to Sabrina. From the look on her face, he's ten feet tall.
SPEAKER_10This entire conversation with all of the angels in this hot tub is dubbed. I will say that the dubbing is really pretty good. It is really in sync. The dialogue is clear, uh, but you can't hear the hot tub at all. Are we supposed to think that the angels are naked in this hot tub together?
SPEAKER_12Yes. I paid careful attention. Absolutely. Yes, we are absolutely are.
SPEAKER_10I thought that too. Now, um I don't really have a problem with that. The angels have seen each other. We watched Angels in Chains. To me, it is not weird necessarily, but I wasn't 100% sure whether or not we were supposed to infer that they are nude. I mean, they could have all had on, you know, tube-top bikinis, I guess. We are about to see a lot of Doug, so Chris is gonna give us a guest star alert.
SPEAKER_12All right, Doug. Doug has some sass, and I don't care for it anywhere. There's too many chains, and I don't care for it. Doug played by Peter Haskell. Peter Haskell was born in Boston in well over 100 credits. I've seen him myself in shows like Mary Tyler Moore. I recognized him right away, Bionic Woman, Heart to Heart, Frasier, a great horror thing for Colby. This fellow played uh he was the the toy manufacturer representative, correct? Not the president. I think he was the CEO of Good Guys. Uh well, in Child's Play 2 and 3. Fun fact, he appeared in The Bionic Woman, which I mentioned a moment ago, the very same year as this episode of Charlie's Angels aired. He was in a 1986 Alfred Hitchcock Presents and a great Disney connection. He was in The Magical World of Disney in 1979, Shadow of Fear, and his co-star was Ike Eisman, who was in the Two Witch Mountain movies. Ike Eisman just put out a great autobiography. If you're a Disney fan like I am, I suggest you uh give it a looky loo. He also guest starred in one of my Feyaverite sitcoms of all time. Everyone thinks I'm about to say it's a living, and they would be right, it is a fave, but too close for comfort. And at the Knoxville Fanboy Expo, where I met Kate Jackson with Colby, I got to meet three out of the five stars. I got to meet the two daughters, Lydia Cornell and Deborah Van Valkenberg, as well as Jim J. Bullock. But that's not important right now. What is important is what Sabrina and Doug spend the morning doing. What do they spend the morning doing?
SPEAKER_10They share about being unlucky in love. The scenery is really lovely. I tried to look up where this was filmed, but there was not really a lot of information. Uh, I kind of assume it is a man-made spot, this pond or lake or whatever. Uh, but it is a beautiful spot. This scenery is so pretty, in fact, that it encourages Sabrina and Doug to make out. Bosley, being left to his own devices and unsupervised, steals an entire ham. In there. I love this little scene. I love that they added it for him. I know that he was probably suffering on this diet, and he's only had one cracker in the past 48 hours. Uh, I just thought it was so ridiculous. I love that he took the entire ham. And I am then shocked that he can stay afloat in this water as he's being passed around after his gluttony. Kelly is updating Hildy on the lack of motives so far, and Hildy explains that her nephew Frank was a loner and a drifter. She gave him a job in a cabin when he needed one. Then she shares some of his mementos from the Air Force, and Kelly spots Doug O'Neill in a picture with Frank. Kelly shares this information with Bree, who is hesitant but assures the team that she will find out what she can. From here on out, things speed up quite a bit. Sabrina and Doug come clean, and Doug shares his history with Frank in the Air Force. Chris and Kelly are at the same time searching Doug's cabin and come across a newspaper article in Doug's wallet, which I'm going to bring up again a little later. The article details a hijacking from a few years ago. A BJ Smith stole $2 million from an airline and then jumped out of the aircraft, never to be seen again with the $2 million. We catch up with Sabrina and Doug just in time for them to spill their guts to one another and declare being in love.
SPEAKER_15Huh? Saying that I love you?
SPEAKER_05That came right out of left field, and I wasn't ready for it.
SPEAKER_15Oh well.
SPEAKER_10I do find it interesting that Sabrina shares uh that she was not ready for this revelation, and then quite literally gets up and flees the conversation on horseback. She was like, you know what? That came out of left field, and I'm not ready. I'm so not ready that I'm escaping.
SPEAKER_12Mm-hmm. It's like that episode in season one where that lady got some news and just ran off into the ocean and then got murdered.
SPEAKER_10Yes, the killing kind. She said, I'm not having this conversation.
SPEAKER_12That's how I get out of all of my uncomfortable situations, much like this podcast. Oh God, Colby, I gotta go. Come here, horsey.
SPEAKER_10We do not get much from Sabrina. I would find it a little more believable that these two were falling for each other if we got to see Sabrina being vulnerable about her past. Uh even again, if her past had to be altered a little bit to fit her cover. The angels reconvene, and Chris and Kelly share more evidence to support that Doug is their lead suspect. The description of BJ Smith in the article matches Doug's description, and Sabrina is adamant that they are wrong. After some back and forth between the angels, they decide to confront Doug. While the angels search for Doug, Lon and Lorraine are having a heated discussion about the money in the cabin. Lorraine reveals that Frank told her firsthand about the heist and hiding the money and double crossing his partner. This sends Lon back to check the cabin again, except he stumbles upon Doug having already found the cash and in the middle of filling a suitcase. Lon gets the jump on Doug and knocks Doug out, enabling Lon to take off with the suitcase of cash. However, the angels witness Lon's speedy exit and Chris and Kelly give chase while Sabrina discovers Doug in the cabin. Doug asks where the money is and reveals that he is in fact BJ Smith and that he stole the money. He tries to convince Bree to go with him, however, a distraught Sabrina holds him at gunpoint, informing him that no one is going anywhere. Lon steals a random truck left out in an open field, and Chris and Kelly manage to wrangle up some horses to catch up with a car. That for some reason Lon cannot drive. Just left and right making donuts in a field for no reason whatsoever. And the angels who are very much on these horses and not on some fake apparatus attached to a vehicle. The angels catch up with Lon Stunt Double, whose hair is very flat. Uh, I mean Lawn and Chris Lasso's Lawn to a fence that Lon could not manage to climb over. It's a really disappointing series of events for Lon. Not only can you just not drive a truck, drive in a straight line in a field that has no obstacles, but now you can't manage to climb over a four-foot fence. Very disappointing. I thought, you know, with two million dollars in my hand, I would make a little bit more of an effort. Doug explains his nearly fatal jump from the plane, stuck in some trees and left for dead. Frank double-crossed him. Doug came to Utopia West because he found Frank and was going to take the money back.
SPEAKER_04She left Malton alone with him. What about you? And that's the problem. I do know. Pretty that's ancient history. Why just pretend like it didn't happen? Is that it?
SPEAKER_06I love you, Prudy.
SPEAKER_10Back at the agency, the details of Frank's death are explained, and the bomb was placed by Doug. Sabrina, though looking wonderful in red, which I think is really her color, is a bit worse for wear from this assignment. And I wonder, is she missing David from the previous episode and thinking I really should have put more energy into David than I put into Doug or BJ Smith or whoever he is? And the episode closes with Bosley sharing that he gained five pounds at Utopia West.
SPEAKER_08Bosley, you have the lean and hungry look. Tell me, how'd you make out on Hildy's Herb Diet? Oh, terrific, Charlie. Just terrific. I gained five pounds.
SPEAKER_10The episode is called Angel in Love, and I do have to kind of say that, like, were Doug and Sabrina really in love? Doug isn't telling Sabrina that he's really BJ Smith, and Sabrina's not telling Doug that she's actually a private investigator there to discover who killed Frank. These people have not been honest with each other, and they've known each other for 72 hours max. Are they really in love?
SPEAKER_12They just stick your fingers in Kate Jackson's mouth.
SPEAKER_10That should have been enough for Doug.
SPEAKER_12I mean BT Dubs, they were using the former 20th Century Fox Ranch for this camp. It is now Malibu Creek State Park. This production area is famous for being the exterior home of Mash Planet of the Apes, The Rookies, The Riflemen, and many, many others. But the name of that horror movie escapes me, Colby. And we will think of it. Our final guest star alert was only in the show in the first few opening minutes. He was the guy taking money out of the event, and he got was shot, and then we find out strangled. Really? Name something worse than being shot. Oh wait. And strangled. Frank Slater was played by Charlie Pascerni. And he's a stunt coordinator, director, and actor, born in Queens. Lots of amazing stunt jobs. My gosh, Colby. He's still working today. He was recently in the HBO series Euphoria and the 2025 reboot of The Naked Gun. He comes back. Get ready for this, Colby. He comes back to Charlie's Angels in season five. His character's name is Benson. And who else is in this episode? Carol Cook, who was in the seance in season one.
SPEAKER_10With Rene O'Burgeon, who is in the series Benstein.
SPEAKER_12Benson. Oh, everybody. Oh, no, sit down. No, everyone sit down. No. No. It's what I do. It's what I do. I'm an educator. You're welcome. No, everyone. Because it gets better. It has a Disney connection. He was a stunt performer in Tron. And who was in Tron? Bruce Boxleightner. And who did I just meet at Dragon Con in Atlanta? Bruce Boxleightner. And who did he talk with me about? Kate Jackson. And he called her Katie. When I handed him my smartphone as his King Fang Sheet sign, he said, Oh, when did you meet Katie? Was this recent? And I was already just a pile of goo, just urinating freely. Urinating freely all over myself. Now back to Charlie. Mm-hmm. Oh, I am 58. Doesn't take much. His older brother, Paul, is best known as Agent Lee Hobson on the Untouchables. Charlie followed him to Hollywood, took bit rolls, background extras, then stunt work, and that's how his career got started. It's amazing. Lethal Weapon, Tales from the Crypt, Basic Instinct, Die Hard, Roadhouse. Roadhouse. Buffy. You like Buffy. I love Buffy. Angel? You like Angel.
SPEAKER_10I like Angel.
SPEAKER_12True Lies. I like True Lies.
SPEAKER_10I love True Lies. Such a great action movie.
SPEAKER_12It is, and it's underrated, and it has Jamie Lee Curtis. And uh you can't tell me anything about Jamie Lee Curtis or Kate Jackson. Jurassic Park, Armageddon, and Jason Goes to Hell. The Final Friday. Which Jason movie was Aaron Gray in?
SPEAKER_10She is in Jason Goes to Hell the Final Friday.
SPEAKER_12Sure was. And guess who I just met at Dragon Con?
SPEAKER_10Did you meet Aaron Gray?
SPEAKER_12I did meet Aaron Gray at Dragon Con. She was a delight. The inspiration for part of the storyline in this episode is the DB Cooper story. If you've not Looked that up or watched a little YouTube about it. It's a whole to-do. It is a complete unsolved mystery. It might have even been an episode of Unsolved Mystery, which we would know if Colby did good research when writing out his scripts. But here's what had happened. On November 24th, 1971, an unknown man who subsequently became known as DB Cooper hijacked a Northwest Orient airline. And I do have a deck of cards in my tiki bar from Northwest Orient Airlines. I'll show them to you. That was flying from Portland to Seattle. This dude informed the flight crew he had a bomb and he requested $20,000, almost $2 million in 2026, and four parachutes.
SPEAKER_10Or $200,000.
SPEAKER_12What I say.
SPEAKER_10$20,000.
SPEAKER_12Look, he requested what I said he requested. When they landed in Seattle, so he got his money, he got his four parachutes, he instructed the crew. This is true, everyone, this is true, to refuel and fly toward New Mexico. Though after takeoff, he jumped out of the plane over southwestern Washington and was never seen again. His real identity has never been discovered. And interest in him recently reignited. I say recently. It was in the 1980s, and to me that was recently. Good God.
SPEAKER_10You mean that wasn't 20 years ago?
SPEAKER_12Oh my god. I think of the 1980s as just 15 years ago. They did find a small portion of the stolen money in the Columbia River. It's the only, to date, unsolved air piracy case. But then again, Colby did just fly several many flights from here to Canada. There might be some more unsolved air mysteries. Well, Colby, we laughed, we cried, we bored ourselves, we laughed again. I tuned out several times. I'm completely out of wine.
SPEAKER_10Who is the MVP of Angel in Love? I'm gonna say Kelly because she gets Sabrina together.
SPEAKER_12David Doyle got to do some fun, non-Bosley-esque type stuff, but in a very Bosley way. So he got to expand his acting chops and create more depth to his character. And then Kate Jackson made me think I could almost fall in love with someone like Doug.
SPEAKER_10There are episodes in the future of more love interests for Sabrina before, unfortunately, uh she leaves after season three.
