Heads up, angels. While our podcast is suitable for all ages, keep in mind these episodes were produced in a different era and may include scenes of danger, crime, or themes some listeners may find sensitive or outdated. When doing our rewatch, we do our very best to discuss everything with care, context, and compassion, and always with a love for the show and respect for our listeners. Last time on Good Morning Charlie.
SPEAKER_08Definitely.
SPEAKER_24Christopher, I know you recently went home with several many purchases. Several many. Which purchase was your favorite?
SPEAKER_27Colby and I met recently in Atlanta for Joe Lanta, a toy. What is it? A toy conference? A toy festival.
SPEAKER_23Toy show. Convention. Yes. That.
SPEAKER_27It started out as a G.I. Joe, and I don't know a thing about G.I. Joe other than they started out as large figures with fuzzy hair. And it was a cartoon. And I think one of the characters' names might have been Scarlet Fever Miss Scarlet.
SPEAKER_24Miss Scarlet, yeah. I think is I think you're right is from G.I. Joe.
SPEAKER_27Or clue. Who can say?
SPEAKER_08Who can say?
SPEAKER_27We were with a special friend of the pod, Kevin Wood. We both made purchases. I got a few Masters of the Universe things, a few shh the Sonny and Cherry things, a few I've blocked it out.
SPEAKER_24I purchased nothing for myself.
SPEAKER_27I don't know what that feels like. You did purchase some things for other people, and you were very smart, weren't you, with all of your back problems you're experiencing. You brought a small steel on which you could sit and stew.
SPEAKER_24I did make sure that if they did not have seating, that I had my own seat for when I uh was feeling pain.
SPEAKER_27I came up with a name for that steel you carry with you. I know I've told Kevin, I may have never mentioned to you, I call it your stew steel.
SPEAKER_24That's what the name was gonna be. The second you said you came up with a name.
SPEAKER_27You sit on that thing and just stew in your own juices like a pot roast, just mad and redheaded.
SPEAKER_24And my little cauldron.
SPEAKER_27Mm-hmm. Bubbling with anger.
SPEAKER_24We also ran into Sean and Rodney, some listeners that we met at the Knoxville convention where we met Kate Jackson. We chatted briefly with Sean and Rodney because they just got back from Los Angeles meeting Jacqueline Smith at her book signing for her memoir. They were all smiles. Absolutely loved getting to meet Jacqueline. They said she was so personable. Uh, she actually signed some other items for them that were not the book, uh, that she was very chatty, uh, and that they just had a wonderful time meeting her. I am envious, but very, very happy for them. We will have to post, of course, her memoir. I got mine yesterday. It is signed, very happy. And we'll have to post some of the items that they sent us, they're Charlie's Angels items, as well as some other items that other listeners have sent us to post so we can all share our collection.
SPEAKER_27We will. It was great running into Sean and Rodney.
SPEAKER_24I really like them. They're just such nice guys.
SPEAKER_27They also happen to be listeners who we met in Knoxville. But I'm gonna because you've had a hard day. I'm gonna let it completely go. I'm gonna edit that right out.
SPEAKER_17You're so brave and so authentic.
SPEAKER_27Today's assignment is season two, episode 11, Angel Baby.
SPEAKER_24Here is your case briefing. Woot. Kelly goes undercover as a pregnant, unwed mother in an attempt to locate a young girl planning on selling her baby on the black market, as one does. Sabrina and Voz pose as prospective adoptive parents, and I don't know what more you could possibly want. Let's all just bask in that description for a bit and allow the visuals to watch it anew.
SPEAKER_27Yes, these visuals take me away.
SPEAKER_17Take me away.
SPEAKER_27Take me away to what? Your super stickered intel.
SPEAKER_02Now that it's tech lane.
SPEAKER_27The original air date was November 16th, 1977.
SPEAKER_19You give me a fifty Minutes in Length, written by George Hodges and John D.
SPEAKER_27F. Black, directed by Paul Stanley. Now let's run down those three people quickly. Director Paul Stanley, the first thing you need to know is he was never a member of KISS, but he did direct five episodes of Charlie's Angels. Noteworthy Colby, Paul Stanley has a double whammy. He directed Lee Majors and the Six Million Dollar Man, and The Fall Guy, and we discussed him a couple of weeks ago because he directed the 1978 episode of Dallas Double Wedding, where Pam's husband comes back from the what? Dead.
SPEAKER_25I only did what any guy do in my place. The first chance I got, I came to find my wife.
SPEAKER_14I'm not your wife.
SPEAKER_27Enough about that. Writer John Black, beyond his extensive Charlie's Angels and Original Star Trek, remember he's the fellow who helped author the original opening spoken by William Shatner. His credits include all the pod faves, chief amongst them, the person who developed the Linda Carter version of Wonder Woman. And that's all I ever need to know about anyone. Moving on to writer George Hodges, very little info is available on him outside of this episode. It is a mystery. It is a Nancy Drew and Hardy Boy's mystery. It is a potential murder sheet on Setdown, and she wrote, he could have done other work under an assumed name. I don't know. I'm not a witch.
SPEAKER_19It has been Agatha all our long.
SPEAKER_24Why don't we get to the classified details to help you recover? I think we should. Now she's French. This restaurant later became the Comedy Store in 1972, before the filming of Angel Baby. The police station here is the very same one utilized in The Rookies. While discussing the death of character Annette Morris at the police station, David Doyle accidentally refers to her as Angela. This episode features Chris Munroe's first shooting, although her target survives, and I hate it when that happens. Especially this one. Such a horrible.
SPEAKER_08Charlie's Angel's doll, golden goddess, golden marathon girl, and golden intrigue fashions, each sold separately. Angel, this is Charlie, the diamond. Get back to gold. Charlie's Angel's dolls to bring the Chris and Kelly and fashions each sold separately from Hasbro.
SPEAKER_17The doll that does it! Calgon takes away.
SPEAKER_26Lose your cares in the luxury of a Calgon bath. Calgon softens the water to leave skin feeling silky, smooth as it lifts your spirits. The soft, luxurious, fragrant world of Calgon. I love it. Pamper yourself with a Calgon bath. Lose yourself in luxury.
SPEAKER_24We are back, Angels, and Chris is going to lead us to the debrief.
SPEAKER_27Zoop! We just moved right into the debrief. Let's start with a missing girlfriend and an old buddy of Kelly's. Our story begins in a faraway place known as Los Angeles.
SPEAKER_21That sounds made up.
SPEAKER_27And a young Air Force sergeant named Tommy Anders, this is guest star Scott Columbia. He's gotten himself into trouble with the police while desperately searching for his missing girlfriend Marie, guest star Sonny Johnson. Tommy has not heard from his missing girlfriend in quite some time, and when he tries to find out what had happened, her roommates give him an explanation that doesn't add up. And he is so worried he's gone A-WOL. And he's making a super duper ruckus at their shared apartment, and the police are called as he's escorted away, and the scene cuts to the police station. Fortunately, Tommy has a friend in a rather useful position. A friend named Kelly Garrett. Kelly knew Tommy during her days with the LAPD. He was a juvenile delinquent headed in the wrong direction, and she herself helped straighten out his life and encouraged him to join the Air Force. Now he's calling on her again. Literally, see, that's how you do that word.
SPEAKER_17She is so brave and beautiful.
SPEAKER_27And he's asked the police to get in touch with her. Trusting Tommy's telling her the full tilt boogie truth about Marie's lack of contact, Kelly decides to offer what assistance she can. But before even getting very far down the hallway of the LAPD station, she's approached, kind of rushed even by Marie's roommates we saw in the previous scene.
SPEAKER_10Excuse me. Wait a minute. Can we talk to you for a minute? You're a friend of Tommy's, aren't you? Oh, we saw you when we were giving our statements. Are you the girls on here for? I'm Stan, and this is Terry. Could we talk to you for a minute? What about we don't want Tommy to get in trouble?
SPEAKER_15Well, that's we're talking about. Let's go in here.
unknownOkay.
SPEAKER_10We said we didn't want to press charges or anything, but that didn't help. If we just told him what he wanted to know, he never would have gone bananas like that. But she made us promise. Maybe you better tell me. Maria was gonna have Tommy's baby and she didn't want to tell him. So she went away. To have an abortion? No, she wouldn't do anything like that. She's gonna have the baby and it'll go to a good home. How can she be sure of that? The agency she went to is getting her $7,000 for it. Not everyone can pay $7,000 to adopt a baby. You mean she's gonna sell her baby? She didn't think of it like that. She was trying to do the right thing. Did she mention the name of the agency? No. She didn't talk about it much. I heard her once on the phone mention a name. It sounded like Felice. Does that mean anything?
SPEAKER_27The angels begin their investigation on Tommy's behalf and based on what the roommates had to say, into the Warfield home for girls, an establishment, one of those things that offers up shelter and assistance to women who are pregnant. The home is operated by one Miss Felice Carrer, who also owns a boutique. Kelly makes contact with the operation through Felice inside this boutique, and it rivals what's her name who's its French Lady's boutique for fewest articles of clothing. Hold on. Wait, that was season one's Angel Trap.
SPEAKER_24Roadhouse.
SPEAKER_27That's the one with Fernando Lamas.
SPEAKER_24I'm glad that you brought that up. It is a big thing. Because once he walks into the boutique, there's five articles of clothing pinned to a black velvet curtain.
SPEAKER_27Yes. This is obviously the set for something else. They put black draping like you're at a convention over top of it and pinned some clothes hangers to the wall. Felice, played by actress Sissy Wellman, has a boyfriend and business partner, Hugh Tomlinson, played by Edward Winter. We're going to talk about both Sissy Wellman and Edward Winter later in the show. Now, this boyfriend, Hugh Tomlinson, has a less than respectable resume, including, but not limited to previous indictments for fraud and extortion, which Charlie immediately knew all about, and that's how he connected Kelly with this boutique run by Felice. But everyone at the Townsend agency suspects the Warfield Home for Girls is operating what? An illegal baby brokerage. What kind of baby brokerage? Oh my god, tell me about illegal.
SPEAKER_21Won't somebody please think of the children? Think of the children. Won't somebody please think of the children? No, stop. Think of the children. Think of the children.
SPEAKER_27Young women are persuaded to surrender their children, and the children are then sold to wealthy prospective parents. Just like happened to you, Colby.
SPEAKER_24I'm already upset.
SPEAKER_27Well, because you're there there were cattails all around, and somebody pointed at it and called it a thing, and you got it all mixed up in your head, and now I'm paying the price.
SPEAKER_24I just got no head for business.
SPEAKER_27Oh my god. So does everyone hear? Does everyone hear? I think it's I'm glad we're getting this recorded. The tricky bit is private adoption agencies then and now are allowed to charge fees, and the Warfield Home for Girls is a registered nonprofit organization. How can the Townsend agency determine if the place is legit and almost too good to be true for the individual who's pregnant, or making and hiding a profit? Charlie has a great idea to find Marie and gather evidence. He proposes a three-pronged undercover operation. Kelly will enter the home as an expectant mother. Sabrina and Boz will pose as wealthy, prospective adoptive parents. Chris will approach Tomlinson from an entirely different direction. And Charlie announces the plan with a wonderfully alarming suggestion.
SPEAKER_01Okay, where do we start? We start with Kelly getting pregnant.
SPEAKER_08What? I quit.
SPEAKER_27That's a bunch of info. Let's take a well-deserved break because my baby's kicking and I'm feeling bloated. Our lower backs are killing us.
SPEAKER_02Gotta say it!
SPEAKER_27And when we return, Colby will give birth to a few guest star alerts.
SPEAKER_03The race is on, and then the man gonna get licked at the ballot box. No woman beats Dan Fielding. Unless he answered to. Then it's the season premiere of Baby Boom. When a working mom gets a case of the guilt.
SPEAKER_15I gotta pull it together.
SPEAKER_03What's a mother to do? Hello, JC.
SPEAKER_16Mrs. Anderson.
SPEAKER_03Kate Jackson learns why Mother knows best on the season premiere of Baby Boom, Wednesday following night court.
SPEAKER_00And then mommy kissed Daddy, and the angel told the stork, and the stork flew down from heaven and left a diamond under a leaf in the cabbage patch, and the diamond turned into a baby. Our parents are having a baby too. They had sex.
SPEAKER_09He has my father's eyes. Gomez, take those out of his mouth.
SPEAKER_24Welcome back, angels, and now for a few guest star alerts. Sergeant Tommy Anders, friend of Kelly and AWOL soldier, searching for his girlfriend, is played by Scott Columbia. Notable for Porkies, Porky's 2, and Porky's Revenge. Fame, the TV version with Debbie Allen, Hattie Shack, One Day at a Time, as Valerie Bertinelli's boyfriend, Phyllis and The Secrets of Isis. Do you know the theme song to The Secrets of Isis?
SPEAKER_27If you how could that I'm offended? Zephyr winds that blow on high, lift me up that I may fly.
SPEAKER_24I knew you did.
SPEAKER_27That's not really the theme song.
SPEAKER_24It's not, but you know what I meant.
SPEAKER_27I knew what you meant. I hope everyone hears, so I just have to wade through the weeds and bull rushes and bobtails to get to what he's actually asking me. Oh, I'm just worried about Sissy Wellman, though, Colby.
SPEAKER_24Well, boutique owner and co-conspirator and this black market baby operation, Felice Carrer, is played by Sissy Wellman. Her father directed the very first Academy Award winner for best picture, and her sister married a familiar television leading man. William Wellman won the first Academy Award for Outstanding Picture for Wings in 1927. Her sister married actor James Francis. She herself was married to Robert Donner, who is best known for his Morkin Mindy appearances, and we discussed him in the Charlie's Angels episode as one of the baddies hunting down Bobby Skip in To Kill an Angel. Both Sissy and Robert were on the Waltons, and their characters got married in 1977. They were already married in real life.
SPEAKER_27Kelly goes undercover, posing as a pregnant young woman planning to surrender her baby. See, she's in that boutique looking at baby clothes, and Felice is what's up? And Kelly's like, God, I'm Pregers. And Kelly's like, eh. And Felice is like, What? And Kelly's like, yeah. And Felice's like, I know what you could do. And Kelly's like, I would love to know what I could do. And Felice is like, well, come with me and I'll show you this home for girls.
SPEAKER_12Well, then I was all like, no. And then you were like, you are. And then he was all like, no, but then you are. And then I was all like, I kind of am. So long story short, he's kind of my boyfriend right now. I am so pretty. You really are. Is there like cheer practice today?
SPEAKER_27Once inside this home, Kelly is assured by the lady running the place, Miss Cutler, played by Ivy Bethune, will have some things to say about Ivy Bethune. And Felice, Kelly will get free lodging and care, and $3,000 from the home for girls. Kelly says, $3,000 is great, but what about my year supply of Anastasia Beverly Hills?
SPEAKER_15Now, Sashay, away. Once I sign that paper and agree to let you have my baby when it's born, what'll happen to it? I mean, what kind of people will it go to?
SPEAKER_13Those are the exact same questions I'd ask if I were in your place, Kelly. That's why I brought you here. When you leave, you will have $3,000 in your purse, part of the fee the adoptive parents will pay. Well, what's that got to do with the kind of people who have my baby? Well, if they can afford to pay more than $3,000 to adopt a child, they'll certainly give it proper medical care and schooling, don't you think?
SPEAKER_15I guess so. Rich people wouldn't want a baby without education or who's sick. Exactly. You just sign this and we'll get you to your room.
SPEAKER_27After being tucked away in her room by this intake nurse who's played by Ivy Bethune, I don't know why we can't hurry up and get to her. As Kelly's tucked away in her room, night falls over the home for girls, and Kelly hears crying. Well, the walls look pretty thick to me, but you know, maybe it's a loud crier. God, don't you just hate a loud crier. TV luck would have it. When Kelly goes to investigate the room next door, the sobbing young mother is Marie. What are the chances? I'm gonna tell you the chances pretty good because we only have fifty minutes. Conveniently to this fifty minute tight tight schedule, Marie trusts Kelly instantly and confesses she's having second thoughts. About what? says Colby. I'll tell you, answers Chris. Marie no longer wants to give up her child. But leaving the home is not going to be nearly as easy as she would like. She's put up feelers, and the home said, mm-mm. But Ms. Morris, who seems to sort of also be the Edna Garrett character from Facts of Life, she is in charge of the dorm. She catches the two women chatting it up and reminds them harshly there's no visitation after 9 p.m. And wow, this is like a dorm at a private school for girls.
SPEAKER_11I don't think you understand our regulations, Kelly. There'll be no visiting after 9 o'clock.
SPEAKER_27Kelly also learns about another young woman, the name of whom is Annette Morris, who apparently changed her mind about surrendering her baby. This went over like a lead balloon with everyone in charge of the home for girls, because Annette subsequently disappeared. And the Townsend team, with a little bit of research, found out Annette was found what? Dead. Where? Back in LA. Cause of death, suicide, jumping from a building or was it? The other young women at the Home for Girls believe Annette was murdered because she wanted to back out of the deal, as does Annette's mother, who later met with Chris and Boz. Annette had shown up at her mother's home, obviously beaten and mad and babyless and ready for revenge against the Home for Girls.
SPEAKER_07She came back to us after she had it crying. But they made her and she was going to get even. Towards the bus stop. A car pulled up beside her. A man was driving. I had never seen him before. They talked a minute. She was yelling at him. She was very mad. Then she got into the car. They drove off together.
SPEAKER_01Do you think you could recognize that man if you saw him again?
SPEAKER_07Yes, I would. I gave a description to the officer. They think that they think that Ann Annette took her life because of the baby and the drugs. I I can't blame them for thinking that. I mean all the trouble that she had. But she wouldn't do that. Never. Someone killed her.
SPEAKER_27Kelly decides to reveal all to Marie who she really is, her personal history and friendship with Tommy, and their desire to help Marie.
SPEAKER_14You haven't given away your baby yet. I signed a paper. Don't worry about it. If we can prove they're doing something illegal here, it won't mean a thing.
SPEAKER_27What began as a search for Tommy's missing girlfriend has now become a murder investigation, and isn't that always the way? Worse than that, Kelly and Marie are trapped inside an institution controlled by the very people the angels suspect. We are going to talk about Miss Cutler, who is played by this whole time.
SPEAKER_24Ivy Bethun. Bethune had an extraordinarily long career. She began professionally on the radio in the 40s, including The Adventures of Superman. Very cool. Later appeared on shows including Harry Mason, The Outer Limits, That Girl, The Alfred Hitchcock Hour of The Waltons, After Mash, Little House on the Prairie, Barney Miller, Heart to Heart, and Star Trek, The Next Generation. And turned up in Back to the Future. Ivy lived to be 101 years old, born in 1918 and died in 2019, and worked into her 90s. Actors Equity also remembered her as a longtime activist and union leader with a diversity award named for her in 2005. That's really just amazing. The Ivy Bethune Award, named in her honor, recognizes people and organizations working to expand diversity, inclusion, and equal opportunity in the performing arts.
SPEAKER_27She's incredible, and I would have never read about her were it not for Charlie's Angels. Or not for Charlie's Angels.
SPEAKER_23I know I love doing this.
SPEAKER_27We're uncovering so many great people who have done so much. After that very inspirational little bit about Ivy Bethune, and now you know why I couldn't wait to get to her. Let's do some baby shopping, shall we? It's not Joe Lanta, but it's the next best thing. While Kelly's working on the inside, Sabrina and Bosley approach the home for girls from the opposite direction. Love everything about what's going to happen. Posing as a wealthy married couple, and they maybe just joined that UFO foundation and then got shut down.
SPEAKER_22Oh ho, one callback.
SPEAKER_27So now this wealthy couple present themselves as a prospective adoptive parent with plenty of money and very little patience. Hugh Tomlinson personally introduces them to Felice. Remember, Felice is the person who owns the boutique, also his girlfriend, also his business partner in this.
SPEAKER_24No, she ain't.
SPEAKER_27What? She is always a big thing.
SPEAKER_24I don't believe for a second that they are together as a couple, but okay.
SPEAKER_27You're talking to me.
SPEAKER_24I'm talking to everybody. You ain't with her. Then with a long sigh, she's back. Why? He's playing around. There is no way. I just refuse to believe it. Especially by the end of the episode.
SPEAKER_27Well, he is playing around, but two things can be true. She can be his girlfriend. And now you've wasted several many minutes of my time, and I'm 58, and the Grim Reaper is breathing down my neck.
SPEAKER_07He's so old.
SPEAKER_27As a reminder, Hugh Tomlinson, who has a lot to do, as Colby alluded to, and we're going to find out what, takes the time to introduce them to Felice. The owner of the boutique, his girlfriend, and business partner, which instantly begs the question: who is watching the five articles of clothing in the boutique if Felice is here at the home for girls? They're not going to sell themselves. Sabrina adopts the persona of a demanding chain-smoking socialite while Bosley plays her affluent husband.
SPEAKER_20Have you set your minds on a boy or girl?
SPEAKER_06Well, it really doesn't matter as long as it resembles me. I'd like for it to have dark hair, brown eyes. How much will that cost?
SPEAKER_01My wife doesn't mince words.
SPEAKER_06Well, you see, we can afford the things that we want, and we have no intention of waiting two years to adopt a baby. That's what you're here for, isn't it?
SPEAKER_27The pair soon discover this supposed charitable institution operates more like an auction house. They find themselves bidding against another couple for Kelly's non-existent baby. Their undercover performance gives us some very cool comic relief, but it also confirms the Warfield Home for Girls is selling children rather than arranging legit adoptions.
SPEAKER_24I really enjoy giving to see Kate Jackson stretch her acting ability. This is not something that we have seen before. I absolutely love HBIC's Sabrina. I I wish there were like five more episodes where she got to do this. When they walk in and ask if she wants some tea, she's like, no, but I'll take a scotch and water. As she like does nothing but puff smoke in Hugh's face. I also noticed while they're outside having this uh sort of one-way auction for Kelly's baby, the location that they are at is the King Gillette Ranch that we have mentioned before. I noticed because the columns in the background looked really familiar to me. And it is actually the same setting used in season four's episode, Nips and Tux.
SPEAKER_16That was exhausting.
SPEAKER_27I have a couple of questions for you, Colby.
SPEAKER_16Sure.
SPEAKER_27What did you see in the background that clued you in?
SPEAKER_24Well, I didn't know that it was the King Gillette ranch, but I saw some columns in the background. There's a a set of stairs and then some columns.
SPEAKER_27Do you think they were marble columns?
SPEAKER_21Marble columns. Elegant, sturdy, and bursting with class. Nothing says I've got money and power like marble columns.
SPEAKER_24Are they marble columns? I don't know.
SPEAKER_21People are gonna look at your house and go, who lives there? The Pope? What is that? The Playboy mansion? It's ridiculous.
SPEAKER_24Here's my I looked it up and confirmed that it is in the episode Nipson Tux.
SPEAKER_27I don't care about any of that. Here's my second question based on your we'll just call them added bits and pieces. You mentioned they were in a one-way auction. What exactly is a one-way auction as opposed to a two-way auction? I'm confused.
SPEAKER_24Well, I meant because the other family is not there to bid on Kelly's baby.
SPEAKER_27I don't hate that like I thought I would.
unknownOkay.
SPEAKER_27Robbing the grounds of the home for girls, Sabrina and Boz make it clear, money is no object, and it is irrelevant who has dibs on whom as they continue to reference Kelly from afar. And while all of this is going on, the danger inside the home is growing. But Colby, what about Chris?
SPEAKER_11What about Debbie?
SPEAKER_27Chris has a very different assignment, but you know what? I do it. It's nighttime, and she's downtown at a disco. She's up at the club. And this club is evidently owned by Hugh Tomlinson. There is his other hustle. I guess if Felise can have a baby store.
SPEAKER_24A boutique? A baby boutique?
SPEAKER_27Hugh can have a club. It's a disco. He spots her and Zubely zoos right in on her. Chris crashes a private disco party at the club, and she presents herself as a young lady who knew what she was doing. She knew she was crashing, but she needed to make some money. If you know what I mean. Tomlinson sees an opportunity to recruit her into his operation. But instead of arranging an adoption, he offers to introduce her to a man who can get her pregnant. Evidently, and apparently, this baby business is so lucrative. Tomlinson is willing to manufacture his own supply. Call me it's supply and demand in action. Chris needs money. Yeah, she can come into the club and do her deed. Or if she wants to make big bucks, Tomlinson has a big time solution. He references and points toward a table with three guys, needs three studs, and points to the one who would be the father of Chris's baby or she to select his particular option for making money. And if I'm not mistaken, Disney also says something about having a blond-haired, blue-eyed baby.
SPEAKER_20See those three young men at that table. Right. Extremely healthy. Genetically, they were to marry a blonde woman and have children. Child would almost certainly be blue-eyed.
SPEAKER_10Very interesting.
SPEAKER_20That's more than interesting. It's profitable. It's a rising market these days for blue-eyed babies.
SPEAKER_24And she says, Oh, do you mean winking, blinking a nod? And he agrees. I thought this was completely made up. I'd never heard it before.
SPEAKER_27Oh my god.
SPEAKER_24So I typed it in and found out that it was an American bedtime story written in 1889 by Eugene Field. I thought Chris was making a joke simply about the men not looking terribly bright. Uh, but after having read that it was sort of like a lullaby, to me the joke made even less sense.
SPEAKER_27Well, but you're right.
SPEAKER_24You're right. The bedtime story is about um what were they mice? I don't remember. Where did you go to school?
SPEAKER_27I'm going to jump off a bridge immediately. They're three little Dutch fishermen, and they're fishing through the stars in a giant wooden shoe as their boat.
SPEAKER_24Right. They're they're sleeping and dreaming, but I didn't make any of that connection to the men that Chris pointed at.
SPEAKER_27I think the clot has just raced toward my brain. No, you're right. It's indeed meant to mean idiots or dummies who aren't paying attention. The three Dutch fishermen, but as a bedtime rhyme, it's meant to essentially say to the child to make them sleepy. You read to a child at night for many reasons, one of which is to calm their minds and make them sleepy. With this poem, you're stating twink. Blink. Try to stay awake, but you're gonna keep on blinking until you nod your head down and go to sleep. Twinkin, blinkin' and nod. Do you get it now? You're in the process of falling asleep where you aren't at your smartest and most alert of the day.
SPEAKER_24Yes, that that does make sense.
SPEAKER_27I only know this, just so you know, because of Eugene Field's other work, which is Sad Little Boy Blue, and also Lincoln Lincoln and Nod was in 1939. Well, it is a 1939 Walt Disney animated short, one of his silly symphonies. That's how I did not know that. I just pulled this up. I know, I know, I just pulled this up out of my brain. This is why I can't remember my pen or where I live some days. My brain is full of this. Okay, after that exhaustive little break, all this is taking place right off the dance floor where folks are getting down and getting back up again, and you know this is a pet peeve of mine, like carrying those coffee cups like an actor, they're clearly empty, and you're acting like they're full of coffee. No one remembers they're supposed to be talking over the den of disco divas. Everyone is speaking normally, and it it is so annoying. But you know what? How many TV series have I starred in? None. How many have I been a guest star in? None. So how about I just shut up? But after her visit to the club, Hugh, who I suppose dashed here right from the Home for Girls and his meeting with Sabrina and Bosley, puts Chris into contact with Jace, the man Tomlinson referenced at the table, and he's selected for her. Both he and Chris, see if you had just believed me, Colby, they have blonde hair and blue eyes. But Jace, played by actor Bruce Fairbarn, isn't quite as enthusiastic about the arrangement as his employer Tomlinson might expect. And a private meeting later on with Chris, and it's supposed to be that sort of meeting.
SPEAKER_13Oh, no.
SPEAKER_27First of all, he has his shirt unbuttoned all the way down to his belly button, and it is bursting at the seams with chest hair. This is my favorite scene. When you ask me who the MVP of this episode is, is that what that is?
SPEAKER_24It's his chest hair.
SPEAKER_27It's that shirt unbuttoned all the way down to his navel. It was like a Wookiee. Chris was gonna have a baby with a Wookie. They're in a hotel room to do the deed, and he and his chest hair seem way too nervous. He's so nervous. He's to pieces, and in fact, he can't take it anymore, and he warns Chris to stay away from Tomlinson in this operation.
SPEAKER_02Don't get involved with Tomlinson and his people. The money's not worth it. And you could get hurt.
SPEAKER_04What do you mean, hurt?
SPEAKER_02Hurt. Like dead. Take my word for it.
SPEAKER_27Trusting her instincts, and sensing Jace knows a lot more than he's saying, Chris reveals she's a private investigator. There's a lot of revelation, a lot of revealing. Kelly reveals herself to Maria as a PI. Chris reveals herself to Jace as a P.I. So much revealing. Jace's shirt, also so revealing.
SPEAKER_24Guest Star Alert, Jace is actor Bruce Fairbarn. He was Kate Jackson's co-star in 46 episodes of The Rookies. He reunited with Kate Jackson again in 1987 in an episode of Scarecrow and Mrs. King. And in 1978, the theatrical release of Vampire Hooker billed second to John Carradine.
SPEAKER_27Jace provides a crucial piece of information. Hugh Tomlinson's bodyguard, Leonard Chafee, is responsible for Annette Morris' murder. Now let's stop for a second and we're going to talk about Chafee, the bodyguard. In all the scenes with Chris and Tomlinson down at the club, and there have been several, we've seen Chafee flank Hugo Tomlinson. We've also seen him hanging out with Felice and scenes taking place at the home for girls. This guy has been in a ton of scenes, and now we know why. His character is going to play a large part in helping the angels get to the heart of things and wrap up this case. For a chunk of the episode, we think he's just a background extra or a minor character who doesn't even have but a line or two. But then he explodes into this this linchpin, this keystone. The angels now have a witness and Jace who can connect Tomlinson's organization to a killing. But unfortunately, their investigation is about to become a lot more dangerous before it is solved.
SPEAKER_24Guest star alert, since Chris brought up this seemingly side day player, who actually turns out to be critical to the entire plot. Let's discuss Leonard Chafee, the bodyguard, and much more. Leonard Chafee is played by John Carlin. 179 episodes of Dark Shadows. He won an Emmy for his portrayal of Harvey Lacey, the husband of Lacey, Tyne Daly, on Cagney and Lacey. He was in 125 episodes. He received two additional Emmy nominations for the same role. He returned for all four Cagney and Lacey reunion movies. He guest starred on what turned out to be PamelaSue Martin's final appearance on Nancy Drew. Who else was on the show that week? Nicholas Hammond from The Sound of Music and T V Spider-Man that we recently discussed. He is also in a horror connection, Trilogy of Terror from 1975, though he is not in the Karen Black segment with the Voodoo Doll thing. He is also in four episodes of Murder She Done Sat Down and She Run. He is also in Fame, the TV version, second mention in this episode, and Shazam, the 70s TV version.
SPEAKER_27That is a great reference to Isis, the Shazam and ISIS power episode.
SPEAKER_24Yeah, you're absolutely right.
SPEAKER_27And any chance I can have to talk about Debbie Allen and fame or just Debbie Allen in general. God, I love Debbie Allen. All right, we got a lot to do. We're gonna whip through it, everybody. Hold on to your hard front wigs. Back at the LAPD headquarters, Tommy has grown impatient waiting for the angels to rescue Marie. I don't know why people can't just be patient. Do better, Tommy. Sabrina visits him and breaks the good news. They're working on his AWOL charges. And in spite of Sabrina's warnings, he decides to take matters into his own hands and he sneaks into the home for girls, and it is a spectacularly bad idea. Still in his uniform, this poor actor just got one outfit this whole time. He climbs the fence of the property and is immediately caught by Chafee himself. See? Chafee everywhere, even Cagney and Lacey. Kelly's cover is compromised, and she, Tommy, and Marie are total prisoners now, all up in a room with a locked door. And finally, though, at least, Tommy and Marie get their big reunion. Hugh and Felice are naturally whipped up at Chafee's actions holding these people, these three people prisoner? What the hell, Chafee? But Chafee now is large and in charge. He has no intention of allowing any of them to leave alive because he went through Kelly's luggage and found a gun and he believes Kelly is a cop. Which isn't far from the truth because she was a cop and she does use a gun. But anyway, he decides, Chafee, he's gonna postpone killing them until Marie has delivered her baby. After all, they can still make money off Marie's child. But they're gonna kill her, they're gonna kill her boyfriend Tommy, and they're gonna go ahead and kill Kelly because she's a cop and she may not even be pregnant, and even if she is, she's not that far along. But it's time for a special delivery. And is it something I've ordered off eBay I don't need? It sure is. Suddenly Marie goes into labor. Because why wouldn't you pick this time when you're facing a death sentence? Of course your water is going to break. Mine broke just now, thinking about what it would be like to deliver in a place with no painkillers or gas to just knock me into the stars at the observatory in the desert.
SPEAKER_22Oh ho ho ho! One callback.
SPEAKER_09Gomez.
SPEAKER_22Karamiya?
SPEAKER_09Marvelous news. I'm going to have a baby. Right now. I knew in unbearable pain. Is it in human? My darling. Is it torture? Lee? Mrs. Adams, would you like anesthesia? No, thank you. Do I have the child? Karamia. Mrs. Adams, the baby?
SPEAKER_08It's a boy. It's a girl. It's like huge father. What is it?
SPEAKER_03It's an Adams.
SPEAKER_27The only person who knows what to do is Kelly Garrett. Because she knows how to do everything. She can land a plane. She can drive a motorcycle. I can't do either, so this isn't a huge stretch of the imagination. Kelly delivers that baby herself. Meanwhile, Sabrina, Chris, and Bonsley are racing via orange Ford Pinto with plaid fabric interior.
SPEAKER_06My white slimline telephone with last number redial.
SPEAKER_27To rescue their friends before they end up just like a net at the hands of Chafee. There is a lot of call the midwife, resulting in thankfully, Whew! Marie popping that baby straight out of her lady basement. Kelly has the baby, wraps it up in something, but the danger is far from over.
SPEAKER_24So before this happens, oh when when Felice says that she's gone into labor, JP's like, What about a doctor?
SPEAKER_05Garrot girl's a cop, she's trained in that.
SPEAKER_27Are police officers trained in delivering babies? My father was a police officer and got quite high up in the ranks, and I don't think he ever delivered a baby. He's dead now, or I would ask him.
SPEAKER_24I don't think that that is a skill that is taught.
SPEAKER_27You do your guest star breakdown. I'm gonna check.
SPEAKER_24We're gonna chat about Marie. She is played by Sonny Johnson. She unfortunately passed away at the age of 30. She played Jeannie in Flashdance, and just over a year after the movie premiered, she suffered a fatal brain hemorrhage. She worked with Luke Skywalker. Johnson played Melody and The Night the Lights Went Out in Georgia in 1981, which starred Christy McNichol, Dennis Quaid, and Mark Campbell. While based on Vicky Lawrence's 1972 song, the movie adaptation borrows atmosphere more than anything else. And Tanya Tucker recorded a new version of the song to fit the story of the movie. Christy McNichol and Dennis Quaid did their own singing. We are going to take a quick break and we will be right back, Angels, with a new segment from Chris.
SPEAKER_08Yes, Dark Angel. And this is the new Charlie's Angel's Crit. Charlie's Angel's Underwater Intrigue also comes with its glamorous gold outfit. Angel, I have a diamond for you. Charlie's Angel's dogs, the bring of Christian Kelly, and underwater intrigue each sold separately from Hasbro.
SPEAKER_24We are back, Angels, and Chris is gonna wrap up this show for us.
SPEAKER_27Thank you, Colby. I made up this segment only yesterday, and everyone who's listening knows I love to make up a segment and tell Colby nothing about it, because I then force him to come up with a theme song on the spot. The name of my new segment, Colby, is What Can't Kelly Do? Colby, come up with a theme song for my new segment, What Can't Kelly Do?
SPEAKER_24What can't Kelly Do? These are Kelly's career alternatives. What can't Kelly do? These are Kelly's career alternatives.
SPEAKER_27Well done, Kobe. The other name of my segment, just be glad I didn't call it this. You would have had a rougher time. The Kelly Garrett School of Implausibly Comprehensive Competence. That would have been a lot more.
SPEAKER_24It just rolls right off the tongue.
SPEAKER_27It does. She is a sharpshooter. She can drive a motorcycle, dance, do stunts on this motorcycle, maybe even while dancing, defensive driving and swerving and whatnot. We've seen that. Land a jet, fly a biplane with her boyfriend, and deliver a baby. And this is a mere 32 episodes in if we count the pilot. So I'm gonna keep you posted on all of that.
SPEAKER_24You didn't include lock picking. She could totally be a locksmith.
SPEAKER_27Oh, I'm adding lock picking right now. I missed two things. I still think I'm very brave. At the home for girls, Boz picks the lock on the gate enough for them to squeeze through, but their success is quickly challenged by you know who, Chafee. At least they made it inside the house, unlike the boyfriend. During the ensuing shootout, Chris fires on Chafee and sends him crashing through a window. And although the immediate danger is now over and the episode is resolving, Chris is really overwhelmed by what she's done.
SPEAKER_06It's okay.
SPEAKER_27We as viewers find out she's never shot anyone until this evening. And this scene, I feel, reminds us, in spite of the Angels' extraordinarily huge list of abilities and adventures, they aren't immune to the emotional consequences of their work. We've seen this happen in season one and two, when Jill got super upset over Fernando Lamas' character. Sabrina has been all kinds of sideways about guys she's liked, and they've turned out to be, well, bad characters. And I really doubt that Kelly is over losing Tom Sellick. I'm so sorry, Dr. Tom Selleck. I'm not, but all's well that ends well. Let's wrap it up. With the babysitting operation exposed, Tommy and Marie prepare to begin their life together. Charlie has even arranged, because Charlie is swell, emergency leave for Tommy, sparing him a court martial for going AWOL, and Marie is going to join him where he's stationed. And there's one final piece of good news for Chris. As we mentioned at the beginning of the episode, Charlie reveals Chafee survived the shooting, and all the right people are being charged with all the right crimes. And for once, the Angels have delivered considerably more than justice. They reunited a family and delivered a baby.
SPEAKER_05I think um what should be mentioned here is that Kelly delivered this little baby.
SPEAKER_24I sure did. Good. And are you sticking with your MVP? I am. We really do have to give it to Kelly. Had she not really wasted no time while she was at the the home for girls and endearing herself to to Marie, getting as much information as she could, finding out about Annette. Uh, I do really think she is this week's MVP. Another aspect of this home for girls that I that I really hate is, you know, the manipulation of the expectant mothers. They isolate these women, they lock them in their rooms at night, uh, they can't use the phone, which you know, when you were um comparing it to a prison, it is very similar. Having very little contact with the I uh outside world does a lot to someone's mental health. And beyond that, then there is the money. Marie was told, or we were told by her roommates that uh it was $7,000. Kelly is told it's three thousand dollars in the clerb when everybody's getting tipsy, Chris is told twenty thousand dollars. And it's the home for girls is absolutely the type of place that would tell Marie that though the family is paying seven thousand dollars for the baby, Marie would probably receive fifteen percent of that because of you know, probably feeding Marie and housing her there and helping her deliver the baby. That would not surprise me at all. Hugh Tomlinson Swoon is played by Edward Winter, no relation to Edgar. He is best known for Colonel Samuel Flagg on MASH seven times, and once on the spinoff after MASH, once as another character, Captain Halloran, and there is a big debate on this amongst MASH fans, we won't get into, but it is still ongoing today. Murder She Done Sat Down and She Wrote three times, three different characters. He was in Golden Girls, a lovely edition, although he was quite the baddie in Charlie's Angels. He later romanced Blanche Devereaux in a 1989 episode of The Golden Girls titled Blind Date. He played John Quinn, a blind gentleman, who taught Blanche that there existed considerably more to her appeal than just her legendary looks. Now, everyone get ready as we bust down this list of amazing credits. Not all, mind you, but the incredible standouts, The Angry Beavers, Ah Real Monsters, which I watched when I was a child, Duckman with Jason Alexander, Seinfeld with Jason Alexander, Step by Step with Patrick Duffy, Blossom, Not's Landing, Dynasty with John Versythe, Empty Nest, The Golden Girls spin-off, but not his original Golden Girls character. The TV version of 9-to-5 as Big Bad Boss in season four and five of the sitcom, William Coleman, lovingly named to honor Dabney Coleman, who played Franklin Hart in the 1980 theatrical release, Corky's two heart to heart three times in Falconcrest, none directed by Fernando Lamas, five episodes of Dallas. He's involved in Lacey Ewing and Charlene Tilton's storylines, The Magical World of Disney and 1982 in The Adventures of Pollyanna, clearly an extension of the theatrical release decades before starring Haley Mills. This TV continuation, however, did have Shirley Jones playing Aunt Polly. So that's fun because he made a guest appearance on one episode of the Shirley Jones TV show, Shirley. He is also in Alice, Soap, Policewoman, The Love Boat, Maud, Phyllis, the Mary Tyler Moore spinoff with Cloris Leechman. But he played a different character that very same year on the actual Mary Tyler Moore show. Two episodes of the Bob Newhart show as different characters. Night Court, Saved by the Bell, Father Dowling Mysteries. This is fun because it starred Tom Bosley, who was also a recurring character, and Murder She Done Sat Down and she wrote. A fun inclusion because it was Leah Rimini's first big TV role. And Alyssa Milano was also in it. And Colby enjoys talking about charmed. He sure does.
SPEAKER_27I put that in just for you.
SPEAKER_24Brace yourselves. He earned two Broadway Tony nominations. 1966 and the original Broadway cast of Cabaret. Who else was in that cast? Game show legend Bert Convey. Even cooler, after Bert Convey finished his contract, the next actor to step into his role was Ken Kershival, Cliff Barnes himself from Dallas.
SPEAKER_27I mean, I'm dead. I'm dead. Never in my life did I think we'd get to mention Seinfeld and two Jason Alexander connections. Patrick Duffy outside of Dallas, but also Dallas connections. Charlene Tilton combined with Porky's two mentioned twice in the same podcast. Heart to Heart, John Forsyth mentioned in Dynasty, This Man, everything. Blant Devereaux. And Blanche Devereaux comes up again a couple of episodes from now. One of her boyfriends. Murder, she wrote, Tom Bosley, I worked in Charmed. I worked in Bert Convey, and I even worked in Ken Kirchival with Cliff Barnes.
SPEAKER_24You sure did. And there's a little bit more. We are going to include Jean Allison, who played Miss Morris. She's already been on the pod. Allison played Laura Klusack in season one's Dancing in the Dark. That means she worked with both the original trio and Sabrina Kelly and Chris. Yes!
SPEAKER_26Sabrina Kelly and Chris. Yes!
SPEAKER_24In fact, she was in the episode of The Waltons we mentioned with Sissy Wellman. Unbelievable. She is also in The Rookies, Bionic Woman, and The Dick Van Dyke Show.
SPEAKER_27Colby, that was a delightful breakdown I wrote and you read. And I'm gonna cut out the little piece of back sass you just gave me because it hurts me so. And much like the horrible aspect you brought up of the manipulation, the isolation, the promise of money, the amount of which varies. That's all how Colby talked to me into doing this podcast.
SPEAKER_18You mean a thing?
SPEAKER_27There were unkept promises. I've not seen a penny.
SPEAKER_23And I can't call anybody. We've just been spending them all.
SPEAKER_27Also, although this episode ended on a happy, happy note, I myself am ending on pain and grief, malaise bitterness, and ennui. But that's just a day in the life of Chris Merryman, one of your hosts, the other co-host, the ho-host. Ha ha!
unknownWhew!
SPEAKER_27Oh, that was Freudian.
SPEAKER_24Thank you again, Angels, for joining us this week. Next week, we will be talking about episode 13, Angels in the Wings.
SPEAKER_27And if you like a Colby breakdown, just know he's taking the reins next week. We will ramble down many a path. A path filled in corners and twists and turns and bobtails.
SPEAKER_18Bobtail, wildcat in the west!
SPEAKER_27So winkin' blinkin' and nod yourself into a state anticipating that. And we'll see you next week on Good Morning Charlie, a Charlie's Angels Rewatch Podcast.
SPEAKER_23Bye, Angels.
