Last time on Good Morning Charlie.
SPEAKER_11Well, she didn't buy anything, but looks like they bought her.
SPEAKER_20And coming up, and you've not complimented me also about my beatty beatty beatty. What about?
SPEAKER_12I loved it. I thought it was great.
SPEAKER_20I'm starting this because I'm so insulted.
SPEAKER_10Good morning, Angel.
SPEAKER_14I think you can do that right. Definitely.
SPEAKER_20Welcome back to Good Morning Charlie, a Charlie's Angels Rewatch podcast. I'm your host, Chris Berryman, and with me, because he just keeps finding out where we're recording, is Hi everybody.
SPEAKER_12I am Colby Smith. How are we, Chris? How are all of this?
SPEAKER_20I have no okay. You suck at asking questions. You know you're going to have to do this, and each time it comes as a giant surprise to you. Like when you introduce yourself, it seems like you are gobsmacked anew. Wait, what? Is this when I say my name? I can't take much more because I've been through a lot today and I want to share about it.
SPEAKER_12Yes, so tell us about your day.
SPEAKER_20The other night I was out and about in a store and I saw a used, really, really dirty, dirty, dirty, dirty Olivia Newton-John from Greece as Sandy in her yellow outfit and sweater from the song Summer Nights from that thing. I thought, I'm going to figure out how to clean this doll. It'll just give me a good little project. I'll learn new skills. Sometimes when we learn new skills, we have to feel exposed. And I did. It cleaned up last night beautifully, and I came home before this recording and had just a few minutes. And I thought, I'm gonna take my sweater shaver and I'm gonna shave the pills off of her doll sweater. And I touched it ever so delicately to the doll sweater I'd cleaned up to look brand new, and it worked.
SPEAKER_22That was the bravest thing I've ever seen.
SPEAKER_20Amazingly well.
SPEAKER_12So worried you're about to say that you like tore a hole through it.
SPEAKER_20Wait, there's more. Then, emboldened by this mild success, I cranked my sweater shaver up to maximum stun, touched it to the front of her sweater because it couldn't be the back. Why would it be the back? And it went and put about a one-centimeter hole in the front of it.
SPEAKER_12I'm sorry. Do you think you could find a replacement online?
SPEAKER_20One of my dearest friends is an award-winning quilter, and I'm seeing her Saturday morning, and I'm going to take this Olivia Newton-Jana Sandy in Grease Barbie doll from Mattel sweater and say, Please help.
SPEAKER_12Present it to her tearfully.
SPEAKER_20That's the only way I know how to present anything.
SPEAKER_12Yes, I've seen your resume.
SPEAKER_20That's all I got.
SPEAKER_12But you did a good job first. So that should be rewarded. And you said you cleaned up how dirty the clothing was.
SPEAKER_20Oh, it was so dirty. No, it was a combination of ingredients you probably should not mix together. And I was very proud I didn't die of noxious fumes. If I had that, do you think I'd use it on a sweater? I'd be on two wheels in your driveway.
SPEAKER_12What would you need to find out from me?
SPEAKER_20If you're really this way or if it's just an extended act.
SPEAKER_12It's a diagnosis. What do you mean?
SPEAKER_20I hope you've given this some thought so I don't have to put the cricket sound effect in. What's new with you? Many, many listeners have reached out about your back. They're very concerned about your surgery. By the time this airs, you will have had your back surgery and you'll be on, I'm imagining the fainting couch or having a chaise long brought up.
SPEAKER_12I will have a chaise lounge.
SPEAKER_20And you'll have your hair up in a turban with that big jewel in the middle.
SPEAKER_12I'll finally need a sedative that they give out so freely on television. Yes, I will have had my surgery. And thank you to the Patreon members uh who did wish me well. I that means a lot. I thank you so much.
SPEAKER_20I didn't want to tell you, give you the big head. Halloween is coming up this week.
SPEAKER_03Look at it's freaking bats. I love Halloween.
SPEAKER_20You love Halloween because it's when your soul-stealing powers are at their strongest. What do you have planned for Halloween?
SPEAKER_12I am hoping that I will feel well enough to at least give out candy. That is all I want to do. Uh, trick-or-treating is one of the best memories that I have. Uh it's it just means a lot to me. I have a lot of fond memories attached to it. So I want to be at home on Halloween giving out candy.
SPEAKER_20Was that just last year? You had such a good experience. Your costume must have been better than that stuff you wear for Dragon Con.
SPEAKER_12Uh, did I have a costume last year? I honestly don't remember. I'd probably put on my who was this.
SPEAKER_20Leprechaun outfit. Oh, that fit too close to high.
SPEAKER_12I made like a glow-in-the-dark Oogie Boogie onesie from Nightmare Before Christmas.
SPEAKER_20Please, as Cher hears my words right now, post you as Oogie Boogie. I would love if you would, for our Patreon members, post an album of your various costumes and label them. This is Dragon Con, whatever, whatever. I'm visualizing you and any kind of onesie. I would want to cradle you like a sweet, sweet red-headed baby if you were in a onesie.
SPEAKER_22I will name him George and I will hug him and pet him and squeeze him.
SPEAKER_20And put powder under your arms and tuck you under a blanket. I'm so excited about today's episode. Today's assignment is season two, episode twelve, Angels in the Wings. Oh, there's so much to talk about. Colby, I hope your summary is quick. Because you I just because we have to talk so much about all the things.
SPEAKER_12It is not a terribly complicated episode, so we probably can get through it pretty quickly. I'm not sure. Because right now, we're gonna move on to the case briefing. Musical theater star Ellen Jason has set out to make a movie film adaptation of her Broadway hit Sweet Misery. Soon after filming starts, a series of accidents begin occurring on the supposed Jinx soundstage, only recently reopened. Ellen hires the Townsend agency to find out if someone is trying to sabotage the production. Is the set cursed from the accidental death of star Norma Friedrich 15 years ago? Or is it Ellen Jason herself who was cursed?
SPEAKER_20Here's your super secret intel. I have to first say I would love to have a supposed jinxed soundstage or an alleged haunted whatever it was we mentioned the other week. But none of that matters now because what does matter is we still got Debbie Boone hollering about lighting up your life because this episode aired on November 23rd, 1977. And If we'd been together then, where Cheryl Ladd shows us what we're made of. Oh, I'm so excited. I genuinely am. Directed by Dennis Donnelly. We discussed his work quite a bit and passed Breakdown. So many shows mentioned on the pod. He did a Patrick Duffy double dip, however, I would have paid good money back in the day to take a Patrick Duffy double dip. He directed A Man from Atlantis and a Dallas. Colby would like me to mention the Tealbox murders, which was a 1978 horror movie. And when I looked it up so I could talk about the Tealbox murders, I was so excited because in this movie, in this movie, Colby, is Pamelain Farden, quite famous for being the voice of Lucy in several many Charlie Brown animated specials. Yes, ma'am. And Wesley Ur, who I just met at Dragon Con with his Land of the Lost, co-stars. Oh, and he's still so handsome. It also has one of the guest stars within this very episode. Location Alert, stage eight at the 20th Century Fox Studios in Century Center. It's the sound studio and the stage used for this movie musical. Now, before we begin the debrief, because we've thrown a lot at you, and you also need to bask in my dulcet pear-shaped tones, let's have a little break.
SPEAKER_12We'll be back in five, six, seven, eight.
SPEAKER_20God. Steps. If you think I'm not going to insert steps right now. Here we are, back and ready. Having heard a little bit of steps, Lord share I love steps. Let's begin the debrief of Angels and the Wings.
SPEAKER_12We meet Ellen Jason on stage eight at Century Studios. Ellen is rehearsing Where is My Lady?
SPEAKER_06Where is my lady? Oh, how I need her today.
SPEAKER_12As a figure creeps above the rigging and spies on Ellen, the man fixated on Ellen begins to have visions of a showgirl dancing among cowboys. The song ramps up, and as Ellen begins to dance, a spotlight crashes into the mirror Ellen had just approached. Bewildered, Ellen looks around but finds no clue as to how it happened. Ellen is now at the Townsend agency explaining her need to hire the angels.
SPEAKER_15Are you saying that someone deliberately tried to kill you, Miss Jason?
SPEAKER_07Unless the rumors are true and that stage really is jinxed. Jinxed? When I rented the facility, I I heard talk around the studio. Norma Friedrich had been killed in a fall when she was making a picture there.
SPEAKER_10Excuse me, wasn't Norma Friedrich a big musical comedy star? Didn't she die, what, 15 years ago?
SPEAKER_07That was near the end of the film musical era. The studio shut down the stage and used it for storage. About five years ago, they reopened it and rented it to a small, independent film company. There was there was another accident. A scaffolding collapsed. A man was injured.
SPEAKER_00Mrs. Jason, putting the jinx theory aside for the moment, can you think of anyone who might want to do you bodily harm?
SPEAKER_19That's just it. I can't. Is there someone who doesn't want this company that you formed to produce the picture?
SPEAKER_07Well, besides the other companies who bid for the property, there's my ex-husband.
SPEAKER_12Chris, who cannot read the room, clarifies that her ex-husband is Frank Jason and swoons about how terrific Frank is, creating a lovely awkward moment for everyone. Frank Jason? Yes.
SPEAKER_07He's terrific. That, my dear, depends on one's point of view.
SPEAKER_12Chris is approaching Frank Jason at a horse racing track.
SPEAKER_15Number six. Pierce red?
SPEAKER_02Nose at the wire by that dog. Uh Reverend. Yours.
SPEAKER_15I like the Jockeys colors. Oh, I'm sorry. My name's Chris Monroe. Uh, I'm a private detective, and your wife told me I could find you here.
SPEAKER_02Tell her the checks in the mail.
SPEAKER_15Oh, no, it's nothing like that. Somebody tried to drop a stage light on her.
SPEAKER_02Oh, I'm sorry to hear that.
SPEAKER_15You still care.
SPEAKER_02I'm sorry that somebody's been so stricken with blindness that they missed her.
SPEAKER_15Um your wife says that you're against her making this picture.
SPEAKER_02Wrong. I'm against her making the picture with her and me in it together.
SPEAKER_15Well, wait a minute. Wait a minute. Sweet Misery was one of the best musicals on Broadway five years ago. Four Tony Awards and Yeah. You and your wife were brilliant too. Who are those two guys watching?
SPEAKER_12And then offers Frank a ride to get away from the two men tailing him. They do not leave quick enough to escape being followed by car, but some quick thinking by Chris results in leaving the two men, let's just say, rooted in place. I love every time they mention Sweet Misery in this episode because it makes me think of when Kathy Bates says Misery's name in the film Misery. It's a series of books. And for some reason, every time I hear it, I think about the movie Misery.
SPEAKER_20I think about that movie a lot when we're doing this podcast.
SPEAKER_16What's the matter? I'll tell you what's the matter. I go out of my way for you. I do everything to try and make you happy. I feed you, I clean you, I dress you, and what thanks do I get? Oh, you bought the wrong paper, Annie. I can't write on this paper, Annie. Well, I'll get your stupid paper, but you just better start showing me a little more appreciation around here, Mr. Van.
SPEAKER_12I love where we are in this next scene. The angels are watching Little Bo Peep again.
SPEAKER_03Oh, little Bo Peep.
SPEAKER_12Or at least they're in the same theater that we saw in season one's Dirty Business. The Angels are watching Norma Friedrich, the actress who died on stage eight. Kelly Shears, there was a third accident on stage eight just last year, which inspired her to review the footage of Norma. We watch Norma fall maybe ten feet from what looks like a balcony that was meant to break, but what do I know? Uh maybe maybe Norma was a a fragile actress. And then we see a man in this belief scoop up Norma. It is the same man we saw spying on Ellen. Speaking of, the spying man has returned to stage eight during another rehearsal with Ellen. This man is very sadly clearly suffering from PTSD. Another flashback is occurring while Ellen is singing. This time there is quite an audience, however. The angels and Ellen's son Larry are present. Ellen is singing beautifully. However, I want to scream because she is walking around smoking a cigarette while she is belting from the top of her looks. Ellen abruptly stops singing at the sight of Frank, who has walked in and they launch into an argument.
SPEAKER_05Two, two, that was our number. You plus me. No one is such a holy number.
SPEAKER_02Chief Latin. You put a detective on me. Dad, she just hired some professional help.
SPEAKER_23Now let me handle this. She's afraid. Of me? Dad, she hasn't accused you of anything.
SPEAKER_07Except wasting 21 years of my life.
SPEAKER_12This poor boy, Larry, can't handle the argument or his lines and storms off. Sabrina follows Larry to find out if he is a potential suspect. They chat about his parents and their terrible marriage, and Larry vehemently opposes his parents getting back together. And this little scene when he is sharing this moment with Sabrina, it is outside, so I do completely understand. But all of Larry's audio sounds dubbed, but Sabrina's doesn't. I'm wondering if perhaps it, I mean, you know, it was just necessary in this scene, but it does sound like it is dubbed.
SPEAKER_15Would you like to see them back together?
SPEAKER_23No. No, I don't want them together. Together, they'll destroy each other. I want them apart. As far apart as possible.
SPEAKER_12We meet Ellen's manager/slash partner for this production, Austin Wells. I mentioned in the very first episode of Charlie's Angels that we would be hearing the last name Wells several many times. Kelly and Bosley asked to speak with Austin, but before it happens, we witness Austin call Mr. Mancino, the man overseeing the goons who were tailing Frank. Austin informs Mancino that Frank is at the studio. Why are they like, why is he informing where Frank is? We don't really know. Are they going to strong arm Frank into doing the show so the financiers don't back out? Is it just horse racing bet losses? Um, at the moment, there's not really an indication of which it might be. But because it is Austin making the call, it has to be attached to this production. And now we get the next scene that I'm so excited about. I remember seeing this episode for the first time. Chris is pleading with Frank to do this movie. Uh, we learned just a little earlier that Chris in Summerstock played the role of Ginny. Ginny was the almost mistress of the leading man in the play Sweet Misery. Frank asks Chris if she was any good at performing uh this role, and then Chris picks up with if only we'd been together.
SPEAKER_15I don't understand. I mean, there is nobody in the whole world that can play the husband's role in Sweet Misery as well as you can.
SPEAKER_02And since you played my almost mistress in Summerstone, I am qualified to make that judgment, yes. We any good.
SPEAKER_24If only I'd been six when you were seven, you would have been my both would have been hell.
SPEAKER_02And when you hit your teens, sweaters and faded jeans, so curvy, cute, and prancy.
SPEAKER_24Would I have struck your fancy?
SPEAKER_12So for me, my first time watch For you for me today the first time that I've ever heard Cheryl Ladd sing. I did not know that she was a recording artist. Uh I I mean really went into this kind of blind, and I immediately was blown away. Her her tone is so clear. She has wonderful diction. I I mean she's just clearly very talented. Um I like I said, I didn't know that she had her own albums, she had her own variety show, uh, as well as appearing on other people's variety shows. I texted Kevin Wood while I'm watching this episode and asked, Is Cheryl Ladd really singing this? And he confirmed it. It is not. Not just Cheryl Ladd, Gene Barry is also singing.
SPEAKER_20They all are, yes.
SPEAKER_12Right. Everybody in this that is singing, it is truly their voice. Uh fortunately, the man spying uh flees the studio without incident, and Chris and Frank finish the number, and Chris sort of reprises her plea for Frank to do this movie. And this seems like a good time for a guest star alert.
SPEAKER_20I will be happy to handle that. Playing Ellen's ex-husband, Frank Jason, is Gene Barry. Gene Berry was already a major television star, best known at the time for playing the dapper title character in Bat Masterson. I remember going out for that role. And millionaire detective Amos Burke in Aaron Spelling's Burke's Law, a role which earned him a Golden Globe Award for Best TV Star Male in 1965. Movie fans would know him as Dr. Clayton Forester in the 1953 sci-fi classic The War of the Worlds. And more than 50 years later, he made a cameo in Steven Spielberg's 2005 remake, War of the Worlds. He was 86 years old at the time. Gene Barry was also an accomplished singer and stage performer, earning a Tony known for his role as George in the original Broadway production of La Cage Faux in 1983. And Angels in the Wings wasn't his only visit to Charlie Townsend's world. Barry returned to Charlie's Angels in 1981, playing a completely different character. Now I want to hop back to the Tony Awards. That year, one of his competitors was his own co-star, George Hearn, who at the Tony's performed the showstopper from that musical, I Am What I Am. There's a YouTube clip of that performance we'll post on Patreon from the 1984 Tony's. Gene Berry begins the performance, so you'll see him, and then returns for the finale. And it's so incredible to think how he was on television singing with Cheryl Ladd six years before his nomination and appearance at the 1984 Tony Awards. And with all that inform Oh, hi. When did you get here?
SPEAKER_12Right. Do you have any anything you want to say about the uh wonderful duet that we just watched?
SPEAKER_20Now, remind me again, how fast are you blown away?
SPEAKER_12Immediately blown away.
SPEAKER_20Immediately blown away. I just wanted to hear you say immediately blown away again. It was lovely, but I knew she could sing. I wasn't the least bit surprised.
SPEAKER_12Do you want to lead us into a break?
SPEAKER_20Yes, let me think of something clever to say.
SPEAKER_12Sure, we've got all night.
SPEAKER_20Alright, I need you to hush. Well, let's take our own tumble into a mirror on stage. And take a well-deserved break. We'll be back in just a moment.
SPEAKER_18Cheryl Ladd on the new fitness sensation body slide.

SPEAKER_20We are back. Colby, fill us in on what the other angels are doing.
SPEAKER_12Well, we are still at Century Studios, and Sabrina spots Frank walking out of stage eight and notices Frank is being followed. In this scene, I noticed in the background there is a yellow building. It is the same yellow building that uh the goons from Pretty Little Angels All in a Row were shooting at Chris from before the pageant started. It's kind of easy to spot because the top of that building uh is has what would you call it?
SPEAKER_20Um chimneys, crows, high wire racks, I guess.
SPEAKER_12Yes, all of those things.
SPEAKER_20Wonky gutters, I won't stop.
SPEAKER_12It has like a series of windows that are sort of maybe um window not octagonally shaped, but oh god. Potentially. Oh my god. Sabrina gets the attention of the man who exited the car, and the man opens fire on Sabrina and then flees. Sabrina chases after but is thwarted by what appears to be a lost gang of trees searching for the commissary. Now, excuse me.
SPEAKER_20They didn't look like trees to me.
SPEAKER_12They looked um we'll we'll post a picture of uh several items that they may look like uh no, we will not post those pictures. Oh, okay.
SPEAKER_20We can post the picture of the the Christmas trees.
SPEAKER_12They look like the little target Christmas trees.
SPEAKER_20They most certainly do not. Or Kate Jackson. I bet Kate Jackson was thinking, really, I'm being thwarted by a bunch of I'll have to beep that out. But here is Kate Jackson surrounded by giant green. Please continue.
SPEAKER_12Now, uh, we see the goon who shot at Sabrina get in the car and the car peels out. It is the same alley that the goons escape in and pretty angels all in a row. Boz thanks Charlie for sharing the news. The car tailing Frank belongs to a bookmaker named Mancino. The Angels suppose Frank owes Mancino some horse race losses, but it doesn't explain the accidents on stage eight. Kelly looked up all of the crew who were present when Norma Friedrich died. Kelly focuses on Anton Metzger, the man who tried to save Norma, a mute crew member who quit the studio when Norma died.
SPEAKER_14For what it's worth, the fella who tried to save Norma Friedrich when she fell. His name is Anton Metzger. He was a mute who worked as a grip at the studio for years. Apparently he quit his job right after Norma Friedrich's death, dropped out of sight. I've been trying to find an address on him. That's him. That's Anton Metzger.
SPEAKER_12Frank, after talking to Chris, acquiesces to being in the film, but on one condition, Chris must play Jenny, the almost mistress. Upon sharing this stipulation with Ellen, another argument ensues. It is all they do. Chris assures Ellen this is completely Frank's idea. Frank admits the condition is blackmail, further confusing me as to why Chris likes Frank. He is cantankerous, he's vindictive, he's patronizing and dismissive.
SPEAKER_20Oh God, they shouldn't do a podcast together then.
SPEAKER_00Good morning, Angel.
SPEAKER_12Goodbye, it's on the telephone. Well, you know what? There's a certain chemistry.
SPEAKER_20Really? When does that kick in?
SPEAKER_12Um Chris has to share this idea with the team, and Bosley is shocked to say the least. But it is made very clear that Chris will be participating, and I think Kelly should watch her back.
SPEAKER_14Chris did very well in SummerStock. I read some of her reviews. This is Frank's idea.
SPEAKER_09Totally. Listen, Bosley, we're on this case, right? Now, if Chris is in the film, it's a great car.
SPEAKER_19You're not serious.
SPEAKER_09Like I said, Frank's idea.
SPEAKER_14Totally. Well, I think I should call him and tell him you simply refuse.
SPEAKER_19You do and I'll break your arm. They are very serious.
SPEAKER_12Cut to being on a completely realized set, to which Anton has unfettered access, apparently, as he is seen in the rigging again tampering with a spotlight and watching the rehearsal. We get the entire number of If Only We'd been together. I think it's a really cute song. Uh, I don't know how long Laxo had to write the lyrics to this and maybe also compose it, but even if he had a month, I am still impressed. In my opinion, it is a musical quality song. I have heard worse and musicals.
SPEAKER_20I have a lot to say about this in our Friday dossier for our Patreon members. My comment now would be: first of all, how many songs have I written? Zero. It is a good song.
SPEAKER_12Well, it is complete with choreography and staging. The number, again, is wonderful. More accolades for Cheryl. I am so impressed. I thoroughly enjoyed discovering how immensely talented our new angel is. Anton is compelled to sabotage the rehearsal. Kelly shouts at Chris as a spotlight swings through the scenery and crashes into the lattice where Chris was standing.
SPEAKER_09Well, on a scale of one to ten, what do you think? Ten, at least a ten. Well, I Chris!
SPEAKER_12Kelly and Sabrina rush up the steps to the rigging, but there is no sight of anyone. The team for the moment rules out manager Wells and son Larry, who were in eyesight during the calamity. Next, we get another rehearsal of Where is My Lady, with Ellen also with set and staging. The angels are enraptured by Ellen's voice. This wonderful performance is soured by the horrible conversation which follows between Frank and Ellen. After Ellen tells Frank to get out of her life when the filming raps, their dramatic and wooden son Larry, says, to hell with both of you. I'm going to disappear forever, and then doesn't. In his defense, however, neither parents pay this boy any real attention. I do feel bad for him. He tries to kind of insert himself a little bit into their discussions, a nice way of put it to put it. And they never acknowledge his opinion. So I do have sympathy for Larry, but not that.
SPEAKER_20Before we do a guest star alert, I want to comment, I would have sympathy for this character if he were 15. But he's a full-grown ass man. Nothing's going to change. What would make him think things were going to change? Although, lo and behold, at the end of this episode, things change. So what do I know? Back to our guest star alert. Shanny Wallace plays Ellen Jason. Four Angels in the Wings. We have two legitimate musical theater performers, Anne Barry and Wallace, and that explains why this episode can lean so heavily into theatrical setting it presented. She was born in 1933 from Tottenham, England. She studied at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts and made her West End debut at only 18 years old. Wallace is overwhelmingly best remembered for Nancy in the 1968 call be my birthing year.
SPEAKER_17Happy birthday to you! Happy birthday to you in the film Oliver.
SPEAKER_20And Oliver was enormous. Enormous. It won six Academy Awards, including Best Picture. Wallace herself wasn't nominated for an Oscar, which in retrospect seems rather surprising given how iconic her character Nancy became. Quick distinction. That's Georgia Brown, who received a Tony nomination for the role in 1963. Wallace was cast specifically for the movie version. She appeared with Carol Burnett in the 1964 TV production of Once Upon a Mattress, and she toured with Liberace for five years in the 1980s. By the way, there is a store in Chattanooga here where I live. It's a statuary store. I imagine that's the name. I've never called it out as to what it is. It's a store where you buy big concrete statues to put in your yard.
SPEAKER_12Oh, like a landscaping store?
SPEAKER_20Kind of, but giant, as big as the two of us. Liberace was known to shop there a bunch for big concrete lawn things, but I digress. Disney connection. In 1986, Wallace voiced Lady Mouse in Disney's The Great Mouse Detective. She was on all the pod faves, Fantasy Island Murder Sheet on Sat Down and She wrote, and she is still with us. In fact, just this year at age 92, she appeared on Britain's Got Talent, and she sang As Long as He Needs Me, the song she made famous as Nancy and Oliver nearly 60 years earlier. We will find that and post it, but here's some scoop on that. She got a standing ovation, and it was part of Britain's Got Talent Unseen, where they show little clips. But this clip of her from their Unseen went viral, and the official Britain's Got Talent upload quickly received over a million views at age 92. She's 93 at the time of this recording and has stated on more than one occasion, she'd love to perform on stage again. I want that to happen. She's currently working on her memoir, the title of which is It's a Fine Life. Not only is this title a callback to Oliver, it's bittersweet because this performer has had anything but she has endured poverty, other hardships, and an abusive relationship. Hats off to her.
SPEAKER_12She is so incredibly talented. When she's performing Where is My Lady? I do hear a similar quality to Julie Andrews, which makes it obvious to me. I mean, just in my opinion, she was considered um Maria for the sound of music. And I can see it plain as day. She would have done I've this Julie Andrews is an icon, but I also believe that Shani probably also would have done a fantastic job as Maria. Uh she has a phenomenal voice, and so glad that we can still hear it today.
SPEAKER_20Me too. I would agree she could have handled the singing just fine. In my opinion, she's more of a belter. She can open up those pipes and out comes the soaring Barbara Streisand. Well, the cigarettes really help with that. Well, who knows if she smoked in real life? They smoked everywhere in the 70s, and I was not startled one single bit to see her single. When you saw the cigarette on the stage, rehearsal soundstage by the piano in the piano player's face. People got to smoke everywhere, Colton.
SPEAKER_12I know they did. It just throws me for a loop. It's ridiculous.
SPEAKER_20They probably smoked in the delivery room.
SPEAKER_12Oh, I have no doubt.
SPEAKER_20They sure did when I was born. I'm sure my mother had a Siggy dangling out of her mouth through all the contracts.
SPEAKER_12I need to pat this baby's bottom that just came out.
SPEAKER_20No, she put it out on my bottom. They called it a birthmark, Colby, but I never believed it.
SPEAKER_12Kelly pulls Anton Metzger's address right out of her rearrist. And as an hour-long drama would have it, Anton lives across the street. The angels rush over to break into Anton's apartment. And there are newspaper clippings of Norma's accident, as well as a vinyl record laid out of Silverado. Even though Norma Friedrich died during the production of the film, it seems like the film was released. The arm is dropped on the vinyl, and Chris and Kelly are inspired to recreate the moment Norma died as a means to draw out Anton.
SPEAKER_19Wait a minute.
SPEAKER_12Movie magic does its thing, and an undetermined amount of time passed, but enough time to recreate the entire set of Selvarado and have the angels, Kelly and Chris, learn the choreography. Anton takes the bait and is watching Kelly as Norma ascend the stairs to her doom. Anton rushes beneath the balcony, anticipating the fall, and the action stops. Sabrina reveals herself from behind the bar, approaching Anton slowly.
unknownMr. Metzger!
SPEAKER_11It's all right. It's all right. Wait a minute.
unknownMr.
SPEAKER_11Metzger? It's all right. Um Norma's gone. And you don't have to worry about her anymore. And you don't have to protect this place for her. Do you understand?
SPEAKER_12Anton is dazed and to seemingly relive possibly the worst moment of his life, and he sobs. The gang is in a sound studio watching Ellen record for Sweet Misery. Bosley has been informed by Charlie that the two goons working for Mancino were picked up by the police and explained why they were involved. Frank owes Mancino horse racing money. Manager Wells informed Mancino of Frank's whereabouts, and Frank, forced into doing the picture, would finally have the money to repay Mancino. Bosley then asks if there has been any sign of son Larry, who Sabrina and Frank search for, but to no avail. Frank enters the sound studio and informs Ellen he thinks Larry is really gone this time. Yet another argument starts between the two stars. Larry enters the booth and Frank yells, asking where he's been. Larry responds, Where have I been?
SPEAKER_23Yeah, where the hell have you been? Where I've always been.
SPEAKER_12Maybe it's about time we try to reach you. And this is somehow poignant. Poignant enough to spark maybe trying to mend some type of relationship. It is sweet in a way, yes. It is also very weak and extremely anticlimactic. But hey, at least Chris got to be in a movie.
SPEAKER_20Woohoo! Go ahead on, Chris. Right. Let's take a quick break. When we get back, we're going to talk about the remaining guest stars and who Colby owes his horse racing money to.
SPEAKER_21Most beautiful woman in the world. Witty. Loving. To her. He was a friend she could always turn to. A lover. A husband. A man as compassionate as he was strong.
SPEAKER_13Wait, don't tell me. Not at home. Not back from lunch. And not at the planet. Third time is weak.
SPEAKER_21But there was a need in him he could no longer keep unexplored.
SPEAKER_13I don't know what to do. You gotta tell me, or are you in trouble? Isn't there another woman?
SPEAKER_21Tell me about your mysteries. And how much longer are you gonna wait?
SPEAKER_13We're gonna cut this out and we're gonna talk. I can handle it no matter what it is. But I cannot handle the silence.
SPEAKER_21So you still like another class. I don't know what kind of a life am I gonna have without a lover I don't wanna be with us.
SPEAKER_13The only man I've never wanted to be with.
SPEAKER_21A love story for the 80s. Starring Michael Undeka, Kate Jackson, and Harry Hammond.
SPEAKER_14My latest spring collection from K Mod is designed for all the roles I play. My best supporting role? Even my not-so-successful roles. The Jaclyn Smith Spring Collection in Kmart. Yes, K-Mod.
SPEAKER_12We are back, Angels. Chris, tell us about these other wonderful actors in this episode.
SPEAKER_20I don't know about wonderful, but we have actor Larry Jason. That might cause you to ask, Chris, how many episodes of Charlie's Angels were you in? And the answer would be 0.00. So Nicholas Moby's doing a hell of a lot better than I am. Here's another really cool theater connection. One of Nicholas's earliest notable movie roles was in 1967's Camelot as a young King Arthur. And Colby, you just got done talking about Julie Andrews, and now we're talking about Camelot. He was only 19 years old in this episode. Disney Alert, he was in 1974's Wonderful World of Disney too parter, Hogwild, which was also the name of the cruise ship Colby was on to Alaska.
SPEAKER_14Hi, this is Gretchen calling from the Free Clinic.
SPEAKER_20Nicholas had a short acting career. He retired from the profession in 1979 at age 21. His last role was in 1979's Takedown Roadhouse, a high school wrestling movie with Lorenzo Lamas. That's all I need to know. Sign me up, Lorenzo Lamas. Don't forget his father, Fernando Lamas, was in a season one episode of Charlie's Angels, and later directed his son in the TV Evening Soap Falconcrest. And Maureen McCormick was in this. This gentleman is known for being a polyglot, which, while an official number, Colby, has not been assigned to what it takes to be a polyglot, it's generally considered to be more than three languages. I knew this next part off the top of my head. Stephanie Powers, who is m just a goddess. She is perfect.
SPEAKER_12No notes.
SPEAKER_20From heart to heart, with her own makeup, own hair. She is famous for knowing how to speak eight languages fluently, and attributes a lot of this to her conservation work on behalf of her longtime boyfriend who passed Bill Holden. So when she's in these African countries, mainly northern and central Africa, they're various languages, but she also speaks Spanish, French, all the things. Audrey Hepburn famously spoke six languages. Colby, how many languages do you speak? And anyone who's listening to this podcast knows one of them is not English.
SPEAKER_12I speak Jive. That's about it. Oh, Jordas. I speak Jive. Oh, cool.
SPEAKER_20Mia Maya Persoff plays Anton. He is the non-speaking former crew member who is now haunting the sky. What do you call those things when you're up in the the the not gang plank, not sky plank, but when you're not rafters. The rigging. He's up there with the rigging, but what do you call the walk up there? That's a great question. Look that up while I do his guest star alert. Fascinating gentleman. Nehemiah was born in Jerusalem in 1919. He emigrated to the U.S. and served in the army in World War II. He was in On the Waterfront. Alfred Hitchcock's The Wrong Man in 1956. The greatest story ever told. Multiple appearances on Alfred Hitchcock Presents and Hawaii 5 0. And one of his final roles was in the Arnold Schwarzenegger Danny DeVito movie Wins. But how does Chris Berryman know him? Here's a little hint, Colby.
SPEAKER_06The wind is so much colder. The world I see is so much bigger now that I'm alone.
SPEAKER_20He was Mr. Yentl. He was Barbara Streisand's father, the subject of Papa Can You Hear Me, the very enlightened Papa of Barbara Streisand's character, Yentel. And this is not a Disney connection, but it is substantial. You've heard of American Tale, Colby, right? Little Fivel, the mouse.
SPEAKER_12Mm-hmm. Five Goes West, I have.
SPEAKER_20Fivel went to all the places. I think he even took a Royal Caribbean cruise to Alaska. Five will goes to Alaska. Nehemiah was the voice of Papa Mauskowitz in 1986's An American Tale and its sequels. He largely retired from acting in the 1990s and became an accomplished painter, particularly known for watercolor work. Which, as someone who studied art history, watercolor to me is the I'm the Colby's ribbing off on me. To me, watercolor work is some of the hardest to do. He continued painting until he passed away at age 102. Before his passing in 2022, he published a memoir in 2021, The Many Faces of Nehemiah Colby, this man. This character that he did a lot with a little. My issue is, I'm going to talk about this more on the Friday dossier. This is the second time in Charlie's Angels, season two, even, when a character who is differently abled, there's a pity taken on this character. The first was in Boris and Natasha do American Ice Skating Parts One and Two. When we have that character Billy, the lovable, lovable Billy, played by James Gammon so beautifully. Oh, that reminds me of that man getting yeeted right into that car window. And remember how we talked about James Gammon took that character and played it so beautifully because he didn't play it in a pitiful way. He played it in a very strong way. And this is sort of the same thing with Anton. He's non-speaking. But that doesn't mean he's not fully aware of what the heck is going on.
SPEAKER_12The fact that he's dropping spotlights on people. Yeah.
SPEAKER_20Well, he's got the the PTSD as well, but we don't but this isn't Kate Jackson's fault, but Sabrina treated him at the very end as a poor, pitiful individual who doesn't understand.
SPEAKER_12Well, now she's approaching him very gingerly. She does not know how he is going to react. I think that was the best decision at the time. And I think she's also being sympathetic because they are recreating a horrible moment in his life.
SPEAKER_20I hear that. I counted up how many times Kate Jackson said Mr. Metzger at the very end in the in the barroom saloon scene, because I thought it had to be 25 times, and I was going to get you to do that for a trivia question. It was only four times, but it sounded like that clip I inserted of SpongeBob.
SPEAKER_23Gary, Gary, Gary, Gary, Gary, Gary, Gary, Gary.
SPEAKER_20I thought it was going to be that, but no, she said it four times.
SPEAKER_12He you know, this is within an episode or two, the second guest star we've had that lived to be over a hundred years old.
SPEAKER_20Oh my God, you're so you're so right. Colby, I'm so tickled you're loving Cheryl lead over the past several many years. Do you have that album of her in the blue jacket and it came with a poster? Did your copy come with the poster?
SPEAKER_12No, unfortunately, but I do have the album.
SPEAKER_20Your birthday is coming up in a couple of weeks, and if you survive your surgery, I shouldn't say that because what if I don't cut that out and then you die on the operating table? Oh my god, we're gonna cut that out.
SPEAKER_12You could create a GoFundMe and I'm gonna then you can hide up in the uh fly tower or fly space. Oh, let me bring that steps and drop lights on people.
SPEAKER_20They're called fly towers?
SPEAKER_12Or fly space, yes. Or fly loft.
SPEAKER_20I am stunned by all of that information. None of that sounds right, but you looked it up, it has to be right.
SPEAKER_12I sure uh it's on the internet, it must be true.
SPEAKER_20Your birthday is coming up, so perhaps if you're exceptionally well behaved between now and when your birthday is in a couple of weeks, you you might get a Cheryl Ladd poster to go with your album.
SPEAKER_12I will say I don't have the Dance Forever vinyl.
SPEAKER_20That sounds like a problem for someone else in your life. You could share with them. Mm-hmm. Tell us a little bit about Cheryl's music career, Colby.
SPEAKER_12Oh, I would love to.
SPEAKER_20Do it.
SPEAKER_12Cheryl Ladd was a professional singer before she was an angel. Yes. Under her original stage name, Sherry Moore. One of her first jobs in Hollywood was providing the singing voice of Melody in the 1970 Hanna Barbera series, Josie and the Pussycats. She continued recording before Charlie's Angels, but her arrival as Chris Monroe gave her music career a major boost. In 1978, during her first full season as an angel, she released her self-titled album, Cheryl Ladd. It reached 129 on the Billboard 200, while her single, Think It Over, became a top 40 hit, reaching number 34 on the Billboard Hot 100. The album also included I'll Never Love This Way Again a year before Dion Warwick recorded it and turned it into a top five hit. Now, Cheryl Ed did not release I'll Never Love This Way Again as a single, only Dion Warwick did. Ladd followed with Dance Forever in 1979 and became particularly popular as a recording artist in Japan. During this period, she was also very much part of the television variety show circuit, making musical appearances on two Good Morning Charlie favorites, Donnie and Marie and The Muppet Show. In later interviews, Donnie remembers having to do a romantic duet with Cheryl and being overwhelmed and intimidated.
SPEAKER_20How about some fun facts you don't know are coming? Her success led to her own television specials, performing alongside people like Wayland Jennings, Ben Vereen, Carol Burnett, and Rick Springfield. She had three of her own variety specials, 1979, 1980, and 1982. Call me another fun fact, she was doing her music specials at about the same time Linda Carter was doing hers. God, I wish all of them would come out on streaming or DVD. Linda Carter had five specials between 1980 and 1984. One of them won her an Emmy, and another received two nominations. Fun parallels there between an angel and a pod fave. Another parallels both had Muppet show appearances.
SPEAKER_12They sure did.
SPEAKER_20Oh, Nirvana, at least we can see those. This is really cool, and something I've only done a handful of times myself. Cheryl Ladd sang the national anthem. In 1980, at the height of her Charlie's Angels fame, she performed at the Super Bowl 14 at the Rose Bowl Arena in Pasadena. Her recording career continued well into the 80s, particularly in Japan. She was surprisingly successful in Japan, where several of her records sold into six figures. And if you've ever noticed a lot of Cheryl Ladd commercials on YouTube for the Japanese market, now you know why. She was super duper popular there. Decades later, Cheryl's singing career took her to Broadway, yet another parallel between Cheryl Ladd and me, in just 2000, just 2000, that was 26 years ago. And I think it was like last week. Just 26 years ago, Ladd took over the title role of Annie Oakley in the Broadway revival of Irene Berlin's Annie Get Your Gun. So when Chris Monroe gets up and sings in this episode, Angels in the Wings, this is not simply Charlie's Angels finding an excuse to let this actor sing. Music was already a substantial part of Cheryl Ladd's career before, during, and after the series, and it's one of the things which really distinguishes her from the other Angels. Thank you for joining us this week's deep dive and breakdown and rewatch, because three things can be true at once of Angels and the Wings. As you leave the stage to follow us on all our socials and join Patreon, remember to leave that stage light on. Colby, don't forget to leave a light on. SPEAKER_12Motel 6.

SPEAKER_12Be sure to join us next week when we cover Magic Fire. Until then, Company Bow Angels.
