SPEAKER_11Last time on Good Morning Charlie.
SPEAKER_13Where is my lady? Oh, how I need her today.
SPEAKER_11And coming up.
SPEAKER_07Excuse me, monsieur. You have been most amiable, but I must ask what felicities you have to offer.
SPEAKER_14Felicities?
SPEAKER_07Oh, I am sorry. My English is not very good. Um that is the word yes.
SPEAKER_14Oh, yes. You want to offer time.
SPEAKER_17I think you can do that right. Definitely.
SPEAKER_11Hello, everyone. Welcome to Good Morning Charlie, a Charlie's Angels Rewatch podcast. I'm your host, Chris Berryman, and with me is your other host.
SPEAKER_09Hi, everyone. It is Colby Smith. Thank you for joining us.
SPEAKER_11Colby, it's your big season. It's your time to shine. What preparations have you made for this major holiday of your heart and dark soul that is a jet block cave full of bats?
SPEAKER_09For this year's Halloween, it is scaled down because of my surgery. So I have not recreated Madame Leota's seance room in my garage. Oh my God. I do, of course, have out tombstones, of course, the 12-foot skeletons, as one does, a cauldron, uh, and lots of spooky little things like blow molds and lights, of course. Uh, but of course since I uh can't be dealing with all of the foolishness that I would normally do, I am keeping it simple for myself while I give out candy.
SPEAKER_11On behalf of your neighborhood association, I would like to thank you for keeping it simple this year.
SPEAKER_09With a witch's hat that I found that fits him, I was so happy.
SPEAKER_11Hem? What makes it a him? How do you know?
SPEAKER_09You don't think Oh, you know, uh, well, because I named the 12-foot skeleton Benny in honor of Benny the skeleton from Halloween Town.
SPEAKER_10This, ladies and gentlemen, has been your podcast introduction to pathology.
SPEAKER_09I'm your host, Chris Berryman, and inside You love a Disney connection, so hush.
SPEAKER_11I'm guessing your pumpkins just died and shriveled up, sort of like my will to live.
SPEAKER_09I have one little pumpkin. We'll see what it looks like by Thanksgiving.
SPEAKER_11Is it still in the vine?
SPEAKER_09It is still in the vine, yes.
SPEAKER_11Will you post a photo?
SPEAKER_09I sure will. I've already taken the photo.
SPEAKER_11That's code for no. Well, today's assignment is season's.
SPEAKER_09We're not only gonna talk about me. You've had some recent acquisitions lately, not only from the toy show that we attended together, but then you found an uh you found an Olivia Newton John out in the wild. Are you making any other um are you cleaning up any other dolls like you did with She-Ra and Olivia?
SPEAKER_11I feel I need to qualify that by telling everyone much more than they want to know, but why should tonight be any different? I wasn't a a a doll person. I had some great vintage dolls like Donnie and Marie and one of our our one of our cult elders on Patron and I discussed I'm not a doll person.
SPEAKER_09I just have 212 of them in my home.
SPEAKER_11Inaccurate. Unless you include action figures. Okay. A good, good dear friend of mine. I don't know if she's listening now, but we'll find out. A dear, dear friend of mine said, Hey, clean it out, my family stuff, and would you like all of my still in the box in their original clothes, Malibu Barbie and Malibu Ken and Malibu PJ and Malibu Skipper and Sun and my country camper.
SPEAKER_09I was a ballerina.
SPEAKER_11And my McDonald's playland still in the box. And that set me on a journey to learn how to repair and fix and paint and do all of these, whether it's a He-Man action figure or a She-Ra figure that's somewhere in between doll and action figure, or a full tilt. Here's an original in the box Ken from the year Ken premiered, which someone gave me. I have to hair growing Cher. Oh, that's right. All right, well address that really quick and then we'll get into today's assignment, which is magic fire, everyone, so stay tuned. I cleaned up Cher. Her hair growing action works if you force it, but I'm not going to force it.
SPEAKER_09That's okay.
SPEAKER_11And I repaired her box.
SPEAKER_09Lovely.
SPEAKER_11Is it a repair most people would call repairs? Nope. But it's a repair good enough for how high this sits up on a shelf, or no one will be able to touch it. That's lovely. All right. I really want to change the topic. So today's assignment, please let me, season two, magic fire. Colby's gonna give us our case briefing.
SPEAKER_09Thank God for that. A mysterious arsonist known as the Magic Man has resurfaced, setting a series of fires at Fashion City warehouses. Because the fires seem to involve a magician's tricks, a veteran illusionist, Wendell Mews, has repeatedly been in town when the magic man strikes. Police suspect Wendell, an old friend of Charlie's, played by E.J. Andre, turns to the Townsend agency to clear his name and uncover the real arsonist.
SPEAKER_11Now for your super secret intel from behind the scenes. Well, a mysterious arsonist who has evidently resurfaced is only half the problem because the other half of the problem is Timmy Boone.
SPEAKER_05So many nights.
SPEAKER_11Much more of an editor. He edited many episodes of shows we reference all the time. He edited 15 episodes of Charlie's Angels. He directed two episodes, this one and Antique Angels. Let's talk about Lee Sheldon and one of our listeners, one of our favorite listeners. I'm just gonna name him, Larry. Larry is gonna love something I'm about to say. Well, Larry loves everything I say. Lee Sheldon, the writer, was still relatively early on in his TV career when he wrote this episode, but he would become a recurring writer, ultimately receiving credit on seven episodes. He, this is Jermaine, was a specialist in writing mysteries. And this evening we have quite the mysterious mystery, which is something we all know is the most severe form of mystery. He wrote for shows like Nancy Drew and the Hardy Boys, Tucker's Witch. I loves me some Tucker's Witch, Colby, if you ever heard of that.
SPEAKER_09I have never heard of this, and we'll look it up post haste.
SPEAKER_11Name the actress who was the mother and the main character in the very first Chucky movie, the very first child's play.
SPEAKER_09Oh, uh, I do know who it is. It is. She's my gosh.
SPEAKER_11You're not a horror fan at all.
SPEAKER_09I do know who it is, but it's not coming to me. She, the lady from Seventh Heaven.
SPEAKER_11Yes.
SPEAKER_09Yes, I know exactly who it is. Keep going.
SPEAKER_11Catherine Higgs.
SPEAKER_09Catherine, yes, I knew it's starting with a C as in Colby Chris.
SPEAKER_11So she is in Tucker's Witch. I love me some Catherine. So she guess what I'm about to do now. Who?
SPEAKER_09Connect her to Charlie's Angels.
SPEAKER_11Even better. Who was in a very pretty sequel with like Carol Brady's first husband? I've referenced him when I've been talking about that one episode of Dallas. Where Pam's first husband comes back. What's his name?
SPEAKER_09Great question. I don't know it, but I do know exactly who you're talking about.
SPEAKER_11Tim Matheson. So they were in this show together, and she had powers. Kind of like Bewitched, but they solve crimes. Black's Magic, we've referenced Snoop's Quincy, Emmy, Cagney and Lacey, and Simon and Simon, and later served as head writer of The Edge of Night for over 400 episodes. And this soap was famous for its very involved crime and mystery storylines. But here's perhaps the most fun connection. Sheldon later became a writer and producer on Star Trek The Next Generation, and he wrote the very memorable fourth season episode, Remember Me. This is an episode where everyone aboard The Enterprise begins to mysteriously disappear, and only Ms. Dr. Beverly Crusher, played by the incredible Gates McFadden. She's the only person who remembers people ever existed. He was the person who recommended Jerry, J-E-R-I, female, Jerry Taylor, for the next generation, and Jerry Taylor ultimately became its executive producer and showrunner. Then Jerry went on to co-create Voyager, which is one of my favorite incarnations of Star Trek. He eventually made another career change, and Colby, you will appreciate this. I included this just for you, because you do enjoy a video game.
SPEAKER_09I do love a video game. I love a little beep boop.
SPEAKER_11Yeah, if it's not Pac-Man, I don't know how it does. Or a Donkey Kong, I don't know how it does. He began writing and designing video games such as Ripley's Believe It Or Not, The Riddle of Master Lou, sounds like a mystery. And Uru, Ages Beyond Mist, M Y S T, and games based on Agatha Christie mysteries. He later became an academic specializing in game writing design and interactive storytelling. The opposite of the kind of storytelling I do, which is all about me. Colby. That's really interesting, though. Have you played Mist? That sounds like something you'd enjoy. No, I have never heard of it. You have to heard of Mist with a why.
SPEAKER_09Well, let's get into some classified details. The Magic Castle really is the Magic Castle located on Franklin Avenue in Hollywood, and we are going to talk about that more at the end of the show. A few of the interiors are inside the Magic Castle when we see the bookcase that Sabrina enters through, the bar sort of slash restaurant, the booth that the team occupies. But just as many are on uh a soundstage. It is indeed a performance venue, but it is also a magician's club, and members must go through an application process. Famous members include Penn and Teller, David Blaine, Lance Burton, Ricky J. Neil Patrick Harris, who entered through the Academy's junior society and has actually served as the president of the Academy, Ed Alonzo from Saved by the Bell, Harry Anderson from Night Court, Steve Martin, who worked for three years full-time at Disneyland's Merlin's Magic shop in Fantasyland as a teenager. We have Jacqueline Smith's real-life poodle. Albert is back and makes an appearance early in this episode. And one more, if you can stand it. At the beginning of the episode, Sabrina meets an old colleague from her LAPD days, just like Kelly in Angel Baby. Lieutenant Alex Summers, played by Wyatt Johnson. And we want to discuss a tiny bit of his TV resume here. He had one appearance on the Herbie the Love Bug television series. While it only lasted five episodes, it is chock full of amazing guest stars, many of whom we could tie back to Charlie's Angels. And in fact, we will now tie five actors from this five-episode series to Charlie's Angels, because this is why you are here.
SPEAKER_11I know that's right. Yes, ma'am, that's why the people are here. Teach the children, Colby.
SPEAKER_16And I know that's right.
SPEAKER_09Wyatt Johnson as Lieutenant Alex Summers and Magic Fire, the episode we are currently re-watching. Richard Backlin and three episodes, Angels in the Stretch, Avenging Angel, and Mr. Galaxy, Stanley Brock as Brezhnick in The Blue Angels, and Warren Berlinger in season one's Dirty Business, which we covered, and one of our angels is missing. That is a lot of background info and trivia, so let's take a break and refill our wine glasses before Chris moves to the debrief.
SPEAKER_11But Colby, before we go, where is my Colby?
SPEAKER_13Where is my lady?
SPEAKER_11And also, what about Lee Bryant as Gail Francis and To Kill an Angel? Didn't we talk about murder? Then we shan't go back. Colby, no, no, we shan't go back. We must move forward bravely into the break.
SPEAKER_01Used to be cops, now they're Charlie's angels. Money, murder, and mystery, they're ended up to their private eyes. Then, against the most innocent of women, he commits the most ungodly of crimes. Robert Stack hunts the most wanted. Charlie's Angels most wanted. Sunday on ABC.
SPEAKER_07This is Wella Cholesterol. It's the salon type hair conditioner that I use, and it's terrific. If you're like me and you wash your hair every morning, it can really be hard on it. So can the sun or salt water, even pool chemicals. Cholesterol works for me. And if your hair is dry or if it's brittle, it can give it back a great healthy look and leave it silky and shiny. Why don't you try Wella Cholesterol? You'll love your hair.
SPEAKER_09Welcome back, angels. Now Chris is going to head us into the debrief.
SPEAKER_15And I know that's right.
SPEAKER_11I could not be happier tonight.
SPEAKER_15Now I am as happy as it isn't good.
SPEAKER_11May I just tell you, not only is it fun being with you, Colby, I'm rather tickled. I can tie most anything into the five-episode Herbie the Love Bug TV series, the 13-episode TV series Logan's Run, or the Disney movie The Million Dollar Duck. I defy anyone to best me. I defy them.
SPEAKER_09Colby's also I can't wait to find out about Tucker's Witch.
SPEAKER_11It's on a streaming service. I just want to.
SPEAKER_09If it's not on a streaming service. It's on streaming. I will also go look on Tubi to see if Tucker's Witch is there.
SPEAKER_11I'm ca if you will stop squalling. Yes, at the recording of this episode, it's all available on Tubi. Tucker's Witch. Magic Fire. Or its alternate title. Magic, which is indeed seemingly magic in a couple of ways. We begin with fire. And evidently someone has figured out how to start one without actually being anywhere near it. Which makes me say, what? Well, here's what had happened. Fashion City is the name of this big old fashion industry. And they have several many warehouses all about the United States. And three Fashion City warehouses have gone up in flames in just three weeks. And police officer Lieutenant Alex Summers, played by Wyatt Johnson, believes the fires are the work of an arsonist known as the Magic Man. Put a pin in that. Summers happens to know Sabrina from her LAPD days. And when Sabrina Duncan encounters him at the scene of the latest fire, it's obvious these two have some history as former colleagues.
SPEAKER_07Hi, Alex. You've been any good fires lately?
SPEAKER_16How are you doing, Sabrina?
SPEAKER_07Pretty good.
SPEAKER_16Say, are you working on a case?
SPEAKER_07Yeah.
SPEAKER_16And I've got nothing official to say.
SPEAKER_07Hey, listen, Alex. Uh three fires in three weeks, all in Fashion City warehouses or facilities official or unofficial.
SPEAKER_16Yeah, you know it. Yeah.
SPEAKER_07How is this about that?
SPEAKER_16There are no clues.
SPEAKER_07Magic man?
SPEAKER_16Off the record, yeah. We think so.
SPEAKER_07Well, who do you think he was working for?
SPEAKER_16Well, the guy who owns a fashion city is a child of what I hear something you might find interesting. Arson was never proved, but also in charge of the Now the guy who owned that warehouse and fashion city is the same.
SPEAKER_07And you think he hired Wendell Muse?
SPEAKER_16I think we started.
SPEAKER_07I think Wendell Muse is obviously.
SPEAKER_16Maybe he wants to be on the fire. Maybe get some kind of kick out of a rubber in our faces and I don't know. But he knows we can't touch him until we figure out how he starts the fire.
SPEAKER_11Where's that pen? Pull it out. The magic man arsonist isn't new. Similar mysterious fires occurred around the country over the years. And there's one man who keeps turning up in these same cities. He's veteran magician Wendell Mews, played by E.J. Andre. That's particularly unfortunate for Wendell because his specialty and his magic deck is, you guessed it, making magic fire.
SPEAKER_04So unfortunate. So unnecessary.
SPEAKER_11Thankfully, Wendell is an old friend of Charlie's, and his performance name is the Master of Fire. So he's been an obvious target for police suspicion for years. But no one has ever been able to prove Wendell started anything. Wendell insists he's innocent and he turns to Charlie for help, and Charlie believes him.
SPEAKER_09While Wendell lights up a cigarette in the office, we are gonna have a guest star alert. E.J. Andre, as magician Wendell Mews, he was 69 upon this episode's airing and had over 100 credits to his name, including The Ten Commandments, Papillon, 1978, the year after this aired, playing a character named Merlin in an Anthony Hopkins ventriloquist horror movie named Magic. I believe that is also getting a remake. All the TV shows enjoyed by this pod and every TV Western you can think of, multiple appearances on Little House on the Prairie playing different roles, six episodes of Dallas playing Eugene Bullock, a wealthy Texas businessman. Is there any other type? We have another guest star alert, Wyatt Johnson, who we previously mentioned as Lieutenant Alex Summers. Now, before we get into his guest star alert fully, what he is wearing in this episode, is this like a fire marshal's outfit? With the white hat and the the white circles at the end of his jacket? I've never seen a police officer wear this.
SPEAKER_11I looked that up. How about that? And I know the answer to that. Question. How about that? This is indicative of uniforms police departments utilized when their arson or fire specialists would go to the scene. Because I wondered, is he part of the fire department? Did he work with Sabrina at the LAPD and then transfer? Did he get new skills?
SPEAKER_09Well, I am glad that they did their due diligence and put him in the proper attire.
SPEAKER_11They really did. And you know what else? Tucker's Witch really is available on Tubi. They're only 13 episodes, and Tim Matheson is shirtless in the picture.
SPEAKER_09Good for Catherine. Take that. Wyatt Johnson had parts, bit parts, and appearances in some pod faves, such as Moonlighting, WKRP, The Rockford Files, BJ and the Bear, Battlestar Galactica 1980, The Rookies, Quincy, and a Bit Part and the 1970s. 78 film Coma. He also has a bit part in the short-lived Herbie, the Love Bug TV series, which we covered earlier.
SPEAKER_11The angels are about to enter the world of magic and drag Bosley with them. The investigation takes all four of them to the real Magic Castle, the legendary private clubhouse of the Academy of Magical Arts. Real thing. There, they meet Rudy Solari's character, the Great Danzini. Not to be confused with the Great Dasani, which was a limited edition run of bottled water. The Great Danzini, Colby, that was good. Colby, your face didn't even crack.
SPEAKER_09My face looks this way because Danzini is a horrible character name.
SPEAKER_11He's a handsome vein magician. Are there any other kind whose career isn't going really well, Colby? See, Danzini has a problem. So what is it then? He likes living like a successful star considerably more than his current bookings will justify. Which gives him some very good Charlie's Angel suspect needs. What?
SPEAKER_15So what is it then?
SPEAKER_11A possible motive. His long-suffering assistant, Marianne Webb, is played by the wonderful Victoria Carroll, who gives Chris a wonderfully concise assessment of her employer. That's how you use the same word in a sentence twice.
SPEAKER_03My name's Chris. Oh, you're with Zultan, the uh sorcerer. Sorcerer, right? Marianne. Gee, it must be terrific working with the great danzini. Yeah, but he's so cute.
SPEAKER_02He agrees with you.
SPEAKER_03Oh, that bad, huh?
SPEAKER_02Bad. He has to buy a new mirror every week. They die from overwork.
SPEAKER_11The angels and Boz are going to attack the world of magic from two directions, which, as we know, is the appropriate amount of directions to attack the world of magic from.
SPEAKER_10She is so funny and just razor smart and generous.
SPEAKER_11Direction one! Kelly pretends to have a magical family tree. Kelly approaches Danzini with a story designed specifically to appeal to his ego and his desperation, they've uncovered. She claims to be the daughter of a famous magician and suggests she possesses the secret to her father's spectacular illusion, the one which made him famous, precisely the sort of trick which could put Danzini back on top. And Danzini bites. Now Kelly has a way to stay close to him in determining whether or not his declining career and expensive lifestyle, which really kind of describes me, might have encouraged him to supplement his income with a little freelance arson. I'm gonna look into that, Colby.
SPEAKER_09I don't think the character is particularly likable, but what I do find really amusing is that every time Kelly talks to Danzini, she acts less and less interested.
SPEAKER_11It's exactly how you keep a typical man, gay or straight, interested. You act less and less interested, like you would not tinkle on them if they were on fire and they are obsessed with you. And the minute, the minute they think they have you, then they get bored and start saying, Hey, that grass over there looks greener. So well done, Kelly. That's good sleuthing. Here's the other less subtle approach. Chris and Bosley, here's your other direction. They actually become a magic act. That will allow them to freely sleuth about like Nancy Drew through the backstage and the front stage of the magic castle. Much like the scene an angel baby where Sabrina and Boz pose as prospective parents. This provides tons and tons of laughs. Their act gives Chris a chance to get closer to Marianne, we've mentioned that, and learn more about Danzini, we've mentioned that. It also gives us the deeply enriching and satisfying full of gravy spectacle of Bosley attempting to pass himself off as a professional magician. During their performance, Chris selects a gentleman from the audience to participate in one of their tricks. What Chris doesn't know is the gentleman she's chosen is Colby, it's Charlie. Charlie. Yes. And watching this when I was a wee galing, it truly was a hook. It was, I know it's hard to believe now in 2026, but we really thought, we really thought if we looked at scenes hard enough, or if we paid attention, remember you would not get to see this again until it repeated in the summer.
SPEAKER_09I'm about to repeat something you just said, but keep going.
SPEAKER_11Okay, well, how should tonight be different? We really thought if we peepholed hard enough, we would see Charlie Townsend. Charlie Townsend is sitting in the audience watching his employees perform their magic act, and Chris interacts with him without ever realizing she's just met the mysterious boss whose face the angels have never seen. And we, the audience, think so too.
SPEAKER_09So, to your point, when re-watching this episode, I re-watched their magic act three times. And at any point when Bosley moved and you could see where Charlie was sitting, Charlie was either covering his face or sitting in such a way that you could not see him even before Chris approached him. So they really meant you weren't gonna see the actor playing Charlie. Also, I mean, I I love this magic act. I would really, I want there to be a poll with our listeners. Do we think this is a magic act, or do we think this is a comedy act meant to look like a magic act? It is a wonderful use of David Doyle's comedic talent. Oh my god, yes. Such a good job. Oh, he too. I was smiling the entire time. It is so well put together that Chris would provide clues in her responses to indicate what the item is if they hadn't already decided the type of items that they would look for from the audience. You know, perhaps Danzini's act could use some of Bosley's humor and he might not be hurting so bad. I'm also surprised there is no mention of Chris's knowledge of magic tricks from Pretty Angels all in a row. She did a whole magic number.
SPEAKER_11Someone or somebody at the Magic Castle does not appreciate Bosley's act. We know that's the truth because afterward, Chris goes backstage to take a little quick shower. Because being a magician's assistant is sweaty work. She turns on the water, and what comes out of her shower head? Well, it isn't water.
SPEAKER_09Oh, Lord Jesus, it's a fire.
SPEAKER_11Lord Jesus, it's a fire. Does everyone hear I was on a complete roll and was gonna wrap this up and in comes the ginger like fire out of a shower head, which would infuriate me because it would completely mess up my hair too. She escapes unharmed because she does that thing, everybody. You know the thing I don't do, where you reach into the shower and you turn the knob to hot first. Do you do that, Colby?
SPEAKER_09Or do you just Yes.
SPEAKER_11Am I the only person?
SPEAKER_09I did not step in the shower and then turn the water on and wait for it to get warm.
SPEAKER_11Here's what I've done all my life. I get in the shower, I get all the way in the back, and I lean forward and I turn on the water, and then I turn whatever knob.
SPEAKER_09You mean Chris chooses to make something more difficult for himself than it needs to be? I'm shocked.
SPEAKER_11Yeah, lucky for you, I do, because I said yes to this podcast. And I lean forward and I flip the little looky-loo, the little doobely-doo, the dooberie, and then I stand back really quick! And the cold water gets on your ankles and you're just dying, you're just dying while the cold You don't do that?
SPEAKER_09No, I don't do that.
SPEAKER_11I've never thought of doing that. While Chris escapes unharmed, because evidently she starts her shower the correct way, and I've been doing it wrong all these years, which doesn't surprise me. But this is not just an investigation into warehouse fires. The magic man arsonist, back from the dead, seems to know they're getting close, and he proves it with his calling card. Fire.
unknownWhew.
SPEAKER_11So let's take a break, and we're gonna come back with some totes cool guest star alerts. These are amazing. We'll be back.
SPEAKER_09Did you say they're fire?
SPEAKER_11Does everyone hear? Well, you know what? You do the best you can with what you have. We'll be back in a little bit.
SPEAKER_02That's a life lesson, Jake.
SPEAKER_06There's something I want to tell you about shampoo. It might make no difference to you, but it does to me. Every leading shampoo is mostly detergent, except one. Gold Formula Breck. Breck has far less detergent, far more natural ingredients. Breck gets out the dirt, but leaves the natural shine. I don't know about you, but I feel better just knowing about Gold Formula Breck.
SPEAKER_09We are back, Angels, and here are two guest star alerts. Rudy Solari as the great Danzini are not so great. Solari has an enormous resume, including many pod faves, but within those faves, here are the standouts, the original Star Trek as Salish and the 1968 episode, The Paradise Syndrome, The Bionic Woman, Season 3, Episode Max, in which Jamie's bionic German Shepherd is kidnapped. That episode also has a Brady Bunch connection. Tell it. It is Peter Brady. Rudy Solari later headed UCLA's master's program in acting, and an LA theater was named in his honor. Very cool.
SPEAKER_11Isn't it also Christopher Knight is so handsome?
SPEAKER_09Victoria Carroll as Marianne Webb, Danzini's assistant. First things first, she in real life was married to actor and voice actor Michael Bell, who played Sabrina Duncan's ex-husband in two episodes of season one, Target Angels and the Blue Angels. Can you believe that character?
SPEAKER_11Can you believe it?
SPEAKER_09His again, I this is the third time we're saying it. His voice acting credits do not end. It is prolific.
SPEAKER_11Was he Superman? No.
SPEAKER_09No, he's not Superman. But I love that you're trying.
SPEAKER_11Who did Tim Daly do the voice of?
SPEAKER_09Superman.
SPEAKER_11Oh, well, that's different.
SPEAKER_09She herself later became well known for her voiceover work in Scooby-Doo projects and Batman projects, the latter of which was alongside her husband, or maybe Tim Daly, no one knows. No one knows, Colby. Tons of pod faves, including The Rookies and The Love Boat, but might be recognized by many for her recurring role as Mel's girlfriend on Alice. Fans of a certain age might also recognize her from multiple appearances on Hogan's Heroes, playing different characters. And Chris's head will explode if we do not point out she was in the Annette Finichello Frankie Avalon beach movie, How to Stuff a Wild Bikini in 1965, as well as the 1977 cult classic, The Kentucky Fried Movie.
SPEAKER_11Colby, do you not love the Kentucky Fried Movie?
SPEAKER_09The airplane people did it.
SPEAKER_11And their their movie trailer for Catholic schoolgirls in trouble. You've not watched it for real reasons.
SPEAKER_09No, but now that you've told me they did airplane, I will watch this movie.
SPEAKER_11Because you love the airplane movies. I love airplane. And as fast as I can edit out your airplane inserts, you put them right back in, and that's determination. Meanwhile, Sabrina, oh, Kate Jackson. Kate Jackson has branched out, ladies and gent girl. She's like enough native New Yorker. I am now from France.
SPEAKER_05The very, very beautiful Queen of France.
SPEAKER_11While everyone else is playing Magician, what the heck is Sabrina doing? Sabrina takes on the fashion city angle. Remember, big fashion designing magnets. Wait, what's the name of the city? Fashion. Okay, just wanted to make sure. The angels discover something extremely wildly, incredulously interesting about the Magic Man's earlier fires. Multiple sites of the fires belonged to Fashion City. Specifically, Fashion City owner Joseph Watson, played by Howard Witt. We'll talk about Howard Witt in a minute. But that changes the investigation completely because maybe the person being victimized by the fires isn't really a victim at all. Perhaps these arson sites are part of a much larger thing. Maybe a large insurance fraud scheme, you know, like the one you did last year. And perhaps Fashion City owner Joseph Watson has been arranging these fires with someone and collecting the insurance money. You know, Colby, like you did last year. This changes the investigation, and Sabrina decides to go undercover inside Fashion City as an extravagantly French, which, as we all know, is the most extreme form of French. How much? Completely she serves the children.
SPEAKER_09Kate Jackson says the word imposter.
SPEAKER_11How does she say it?
SPEAKER_09Uh what does she say? She says, Oh, you think I am the imposteur?
SPEAKER_11Imposteur.
SPEAKER_09She does such a wonderful job being over the top and silly. Though it is easy to convince others when you repeat the same French words over and over and over again. Merci, beaucoup, Très Jolie, oui. I also think that we should start referring to Sabrina as Forklift certified Sabrina.
SPEAKER_11Guess who else is forklift certified?
SPEAKER_09Jacqueline Smith.
SPEAKER_11Moi.
SPEAKER_09Are you really?
SPEAKER_11Je suis cette fille en forklif. Or, as the French say, a leaf to do fork. Sabrina sweeps into one of the non-burned down, clearly, uh fashion city warehouses. But this one happens to be a warehouse and the main office, which super, super lucky, is in LA. So zero travel is involved unless you get on the expressway, and then you just, it's the worst. She sweeps into this operation with an outrageous over-the-top French accent and enough attitude to convince him he must absolutely have this woman designing for Fashion City. She has worked for a competitor, even, and this gets him all worked up.
SPEAKER_07Um, Mr. Watson, please. Come here, my darling. I am Maxime Mercy, Large Roger Perry. Oh, my mom, please. Merci.
SPEAKER_14Mademoiselle Myrtle.
SPEAKER_07Ah, Merci, Merci.
SPEAKER_14How can I help you?
SPEAKER_07I believe we have a mutual acquaintance, Monsieur Jules DeVaux. Is that not true?
SPEAKER_14Yes, I've met Jules, although I don't know him well. His Luzon collection was extremely successful.
SPEAKER_07Ah, yes, it was. I was a designer. I have a proposition to make to you that I think you would find it very interesting. You see, monsieur, I've been in this country for only a short time. And I look for a um, how do you say, at the outlet for my design?
SPEAKER_14You've come to the right place. You'll want an office, I imagine.
SPEAKER_07Oh, I should be most grateful.
SPEAKER_14Well, I'll arrange it at once.
SPEAKER_07Ah, mercy.
SPEAKER_14As long as you can produce designs such as these, mademoiselle, oh, I think we're going to have a very profitable relationship.
SPEAKER_07Oh, merci beaucoup.
SPEAKER_11Now Sabrina is inside Watson's Fashion City headquarters and able to investigate the connection between Watson, if there is one Colby, and the mysterious fire. So don't jump to conclusions. Sabrina, because she's very observant, or as the French would say, tray observant, she begins noticing something strange. Telephones. Remember now, this is 1977, so I'm talking about the Yield Desk telephone, the kind China Easton sang about in the 80s. All the locations where the fires began, there seems to be a recurring detail involving a telephone call right before flames erupt. She starts putting the pieces together. This this trait about Sabrina has carried through season one and now into season two, where all the events are laid out and she's the one who connects the dots. You've said it time and time again. And in a rare instance of being correct, you are correct. The magic man isn't magically starting fires from a distance. From a distance. The mechanism placed in the telephone triggers the phosphorus, and suddenly, magic fire! Title Drop. No magician has to be anywhere near the building when it burns to the what?
SPEAKER_15So what is it then?
SPEAKER_11Ground.
SPEAKER_09We have a magic guest star alert. Howard Witt as Joseph Watson, a serious stage actor before moving into movies and TV. His TV resume is loaded with names important to this pod, such as Rhoda, Murder She Done Sat Down and She Wrote, Heart to Heart WKRP, a season two episode of The Golden Girls with Believe It Or Not, a Blanche connection, just like we discussed An Angel Baby with Edward Winter. Whip played Hunter McCoy, a caterer who Blanche falls for, uh is a bit more blue jeans than black tie, and famous amongst Disney fans, and a little Halloween connection.
SPEAKER_11Oh get ready. Oh get ready.
SPEAKER_09On The Wonderful World of Disney.
SPEAKER_11Oh my God.
SPEAKER_09He played.
SPEAKER_11Yes.
SPEAKER_09So what is it then? Mr. Boogity himself in the 1985 film and the 1987 movie. I can't believe it. Is it Mr. Boogity Returns? Is that the right title? I don't remember.
SPEAKER_11I'm too, I'm too, I'm on my plasma's on fire. But the the guy who played Bride of Boogity. Oh God.
SPEAKER_09That's he is also in that movie with Richard Maser, who is the father in Mr. Boogity.
SPEAKER_11If I ever get married and put my engagement photos in the paper, I'm scared the caption underneath will read The Bride of Mr. Boogity. Richard, the dad who you mentioned, do you know how I know him? He was. He was in the original miniseries of it. Is that what you were going to say?
SPEAKER_09Right. Anne and The Thing. That's right, the thing.
SPEAKER_11I used to have the biggest crush on him. Guess Ask me how I know him.
SPEAKER_09What do you know him from?
SPEAKER_11Never has there been a more Chris Berryman answer. Surprisingly enough, it's not Mary Tyler Moore or Rhoda, but it is One Day at a Time. He played David, the boyfriend of Anne Romano, played by Bonnie Franklin. And we referenced a few weeks ago. Back a guest star on a Charlie's Angels episode who had a brief recurring role as Valerie Burtonelli's boyfriend. And this guest star was an episode about it was Angel Baby. Yeah, he was he was the one who went A-WOL looking for his his girlfriend.
SPEAKER_09You're absolutely right. Great, great actor. Well, that is not all. Witt also appeared in the original Broadway production of Glenn Gary Glenn Ross and received a Tomanye nomination for playing Charlie in the 1999 revival of Death of a Salesman.
SPEAKER_11This magic man arsonist who's seemingly come back from the dead and is targeting Fashion City warehouses.
SPEAKER_07Okay, listen, we don't have magical fires. What we have here is a very clever arsonist.
SPEAKER_08You mean you know how the fires are starting?
SPEAKER_07Yeah, by telephone. Telephone? Uh-huh. Someone stuffed a pyrophoric compound into the bell.
SPEAKER_08Pyro, what? You shouldn't say words like that in public, Brie.
SPEAKER_07Oh, come on, Bosley. A pyrophoric compound I checked with a chemist is mostly phosphorus.
SPEAKER_08That all it takes.
SPEAKER_07It's a little more complicated. See? You got the phone, right? Now you put this phosphorus in the bell chamber, okay? You fix a wire in the bell chamber. Phone rings. A little electrical charge hits the phosphorus. Now then, the phosphorus is easy to ignite, right? But it spreads too quickly, so you have to fill the rest of the phone with this. That's uh that's gun cut. That's what put me onto the whole thing.
SPEAKER_08Well, that explains then why the arsonist was never around. All he had to do is you dial a phone.
SPEAKER_03He could have done it in another city.
SPEAKER_07Yeah, we couldn't be on stage.
SPEAKER_08Well, if the arsonist is Wendell Mews or Tanzini, then the phone call has to somehow be made while they're performing. I mean, that's been the pattern so far.
SPEAKER_07So then what we have to do is catch the arsonist in the act. And there's another telephone already rigged at Fashion City. That means he plans one for tonight.
SPEAKER_03You know what? There is a pay telephone next stage. I don't know how he does it, but if it's one of our magicians, I'll bet you that's the phone he uses.
SPEAKER_07Yeah, well, I took the phosphorus out of the phone at Fashion City. I'll be there when it rings. If we're lucky, maybe we'll catch ourselves a ghost.
SPEAKER_11At the Magic Castle, Chris, after an act with Boz, hides by the backstage payphone. We have to remember 1977, phones weren't everywhere. So you had payphones and house phones. She hides by the backstage payphone to see if someone from one of the acts utilizes it during the night. So then she and Sabrina can coordinate this info and determine maybe who is behind it all. And oh my god, I'm so sad. I'm so sad because she sees Marianne Webb, who I really sympathize with, making the call while Danzini's disappearing lady illusion provides her with the opportunity. In essence, she's on the stage with Danzini. She disappears in a box, and then time passes while he gestures and talks and blah blah blahs. Behind the scenes in the act, she drops through the floor, runs through the understage tunnels, and pops out in the audience. This gives her just enough time to go downstage in the tunnels, pick up this payphone, call a fashion city warehouse, blow up a phone so it burns stuff down, but then still get to the audience for the act. And that is clever, Colby. That's how I think I'm gonna start my fires.
SPEAKER_09When Chris is spying on her and making this phone call, Chris Berryman or Chris Monroe? Chris Monroe.
SPEAKER_11That's good because I had no memory of the magic ghost.
SPEAKER_09You were nearby, so don't say that you didn't participate. Sabrina calls back because they are ready for this, and she tells Sabrina that like her plan absolutely worked, and Marianne doesn't know what to do, so she lashes out and starts wrestling with Chris. So she pushes Chris Cheryl Ad, who stumbles down the hallway. But who should return but Chris's stunt double in a wig?
SPEAKER_11Which I think was Stephanie Powers' ginger wig from one sound stage over.
SPEAKER_09Right. And when the stunt double has to maneuver around these items being thrown, you just can clearly tell that it is not Cheryl Ladd. And I blame 2026 TV Clarity. Otherwise, it would have been just fine. What else I noticed is when Marianne earlier at a previous performance, when she makes the phone call and is not in the coffin, when she appears back in the audience, the camera pans over to the man at the piano who was doing the sort of like triumphant, this is the end of the trick music.
SPEAKER_11Yeah, was it light triumphant music or was it the triumphant music?
SPEAKER_09The triumphant music.
SPEAKER_11There we go.
SPEAKER_09When everybody is clapping. Yes. But both of the man's hands are not on the piano.
SPEAKER_11They are not, because they had to do that in post, like everything for this podcast. When Colby mentioned the coffin, by the way, that's the box I talked about earlier that he disappears from. Now let me hop back in. Marianne is the magic man. The syllables add up. But the story isn't quite as simple as Marianne. Hi, now I'm an arsonist.
SPEAKER_05Hey girl!
SPEAKER_11Her husband had been involved in the original scheme. Shim. That's the French pronunciation.
SPEAKER_13Now she's French.
SPEAKER_11Companies paid him to create apparently inexplicable fires so they could collect insurance money. Got it? Good. Joseph Watson was one of his clients. But during one of these Fashion City Watson for hire fires, he trapped Marianne's husband inside. Watson abandoned him, and her husband died because Watson felt vulnerable. He felt like he could be blackmailed. As a result, Marianne learned her husband's secret method, and she resurrected the magic man, not to help Watson commit insurance fraud, but to destroy Watson by burning down his warehouses one by one as revenge for her husband's death.
SPEAKER_02Larry left an envelope with me to be opened in in case anything ha happened to him. In it was a list of clients who had paid Larry to start those insurance fires. And the last name on the list was Joseph Watson.
SPEAKER_06Then your husband was that man that was killed in that fire in Detroit.
SPEAKER_02Watson tricked Larry somehow. He trapped him in in that warehouse. And then he set it on fire. I know it. I know it. But I I couldn't prove it. But I see I I I knew how Larry started the fires. I wanted to ruin Watson. To destroy everything he owned with fire.
SPEAKER_11And that means magician Wendell Mews was indeed innocent all along. Well, there's good and there's bad. The bad news is Sabrina is still inside this Fashion City headquarters, while Chris, Kelly, and Boz get all this info out of Marianna of Jerry. The evening security guard sees Sabrina as this French designer headed into Watson's office to stand her vigil by the phone, and he calls Watson. Watson arrives, he catches Sabrina, but he draws the wrong conclusion. He believes Sabrina is the new Magic Man who's been destroying all of his warehouses. And I say new because Watson knows he double crossed and killed the real Magic Man arsonist. And since Watson already has a history of solving problems with fire, which by the way, I'm gonna look into because it sounds like not a bad idea. The the Olivia Newton John Doll sweater problem will fix itself I had last week. He ties up Sabrina, he rigs the telephone again, I guess are just telephones everywhere, and leaves her inside the building. The phone rings, the phosphorus ignites, and Fashion City begins to burn down around Sabrina. But Chris and Kelly race to the warehouse from the magic mansion castle a gogo atorium. And they thank goodness they reach Sabrina before the flames do, while Lieutenant Summers and the police close in on Watson. Well, Watson's old insurance scam has finally caught up with him. Let's wrap up. Back at the town's agency for the debrief, Charlie has one final surprise, and I alluded to it. Well, I didn't allude to it, I came right out and said it. Get your words right, Chris. He tells the angels he attended Chris and Bosley's performance at the Magic Castle.
SPEAKER_12Well done, Angels. Joseph Watson was picked up by the police last night.
SPEAKER_06Whatever happens to him, I'd say Marianne Webb's revenge was a success. Well, I hope that's a comfort to her in prison.
SPEAKER_12Oh, one more thing, Chris. I did want to compliment you and Bosley on that marvelous mind-reading act.
SPEAKER_08Thank you, Charlie.
SPEAKER_12Charlie. You were there? Of course. I wouldn't have missed it for the world. I gave Chris my pen, and Bosley got it right away. Goodbye, Angel. Wait, Charlie, Charlie.
SPEAKER_07Okay.
SPEAKER_03I don't know. It was it was really dark. Well, try to remember, Chris. I was nervous. Oh, come on.
SPEAKER_07Was he tall? Was he short? What was I? Well, I don't know. You gotta think. You gotta think a little harder. The man handed you the pin. He gave you the pin. You said get this.
SPEAKER_11And after an episode involving invisible arsonists, phosphorus-filled telephones, the plague of the southeast, a French fashion designer, the great Danzini, a flaming shower, which now I think I am gonna start all my showers from the side, Bosley the Magnificent, and Charlie Townsend hiding in plain sight. The angels have finally solved the mystery of Roadhouse, the magic fire.
SPEAKER_09As we close out this episode, I have one final guest star alert. Do it. Watson had two goons because everyone has goons. Damn it. And he used them in this episode to follow Sabrina around. He believes she wasn't really a designer from Frost, who had worked with his major European competitor. One evening, the two goons followed Sabrina, now it's herself, to the Magic Castle. She was there to see Boz and Chris pull off their magic act and to touch pace with the team. During the act, yes, Chris called upon Charlie without knowing it, but tipped off Sabrina during the performance. Chris also called upon the two goons, hoping to learn who they were and for whom they worked. Long story short, one of the goons has speaking lines, and it's the character of Thomas Romero. Romero the goon was played by Jay Rasomney, and we must cover him. His resume is all over the place, and we shall summarize it thusly. Bit parts in theatrical releases. Yeah, sure. Maybe The Godfather Part 2, Taking of Pelham 123, Bad Boys 2, Ninja 3, one that we love to mention. Yes, Breaking Two Electric Boogaloo, the only break in you can do.
SPEAKER_11Oh, with Mr. Boogity.
SPEAKER_09Death Wish. Are there TV credits? Yes, of course there are. The Rockford Files, The Fall Guy, Hiley Majors, who has your dinner ready now at 6 p.m. Yeah. The Misadventures of Sheriff Logo.
SPEAKER_11Oh my god, I meant to put Lobo. Will you just redo the whole TV thing? I'm so sorry.
SPEAKER_09I remember when Logo was a logo ahead of his time. He was I'm sorry.
SPEAKER_11Look, you have to admit my scripts are good. There's an occasional spelling error, but we're talking one or two.
SPEAKER_09Sure, Rhonda.
SPEAKER_11Not per sentence.
SPEAKER_09He also has horror credits. He co-produced the 1980 holiday slasher to All a Good Night, and also played Dan in the film.
SPEAKER_11Have you seen it?
SPEAKER_09It's holiday, like Christmas slasher.
SPEAKER_11Well, I honey, you I I one, I wrote this script, and two, yes, 1980 holiday slasher. Easter didn't immediately pop to mind when I read To All a Good Night.
SPEAKER_09Well, in the 80s, we also had The Leprechaun.
SPEAKER_11There's To All the Good Night. Yeah, I'm just telling you To All the Good Night. I'm squeezing my face.
SPEAKER_09I've seen this film more than once. I gave it a second chance for whatever reason and should not have. It's rough.
SPEAKER_11I can't wait to watch it.
SPEAKER_09Also, children's television. He played Silky on Sid and Marty Croft's Wonderbug in 1977.
SPEAKER_11Colby, if I can't tie something into the million-dollar duck, I can tie it into a Sid and Marty Croft. And I hate to interrupt you, but I do believe he made a few appearances at the world of Sid and Marty Croft in your very own town, Atlanta Sidney. In Atlantra. In Atlantra. Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm.
SPEAKER_09He also may have been in pornography.
SPEAKER_11Yes, ma'am.
SPEAKER_09The star of an X-rated sex comedy in 1975. Star Sounds Generous. Wam bam, thank you, Spaceman. He was an alien. The language is explicit and there is nudity. There are no explicit actual scenes of sex performed by him or any other actor. A later cut that had nothing to do with this actor inserted hardcore explicit scenes using body doubles. Again, he did not participate in the explicit version and had no control uh for whatever reason over the added scenes.
SPEAKER_11I watched the entire thing on YouTube, and that should tell you how explicit it is. Wham bam, thank you, Space Man is on YouTube.
SPEAKER_09I also have a little bit of information about the Magic Castle. I now I'm gonna preface this. You cannot walk into the Magic Castle. It is essentially invitation only unless you're staying at the attached hotel.
SPEAKER_11There's an attached hotel.
SPEAKER_09Yes. Uh you can also have brunch there if you'd like. I want to have brunch at the hotel. I'm mentioning this because I passed the Magic Castle my last time in Los Angeles and took a picture while I was trying to find Charlie's Angels locations. So I will, of course, will post that picture that I took of the Magic Castle. I'll post a little video online of the tour that you can take, and you'll see many of the areas that you saw in this episode. As I stated, it is a private invite-only clubhouse for the Academy of Magical Arts, which we mentioned. There are a few ways to get in. You must secure an invitation or qualify through one of these exclusive methods. How do I do it? You can be a member, which is joining as an official magician or an associate member. I'm not that. You can go as a guest. Right. You have to know a member who is willing to issue you a guest card.
SPEAKER_11Colby, are you a member of the Magic Castle?
SPEAKER_09I am not a member of Magic Castle. Oh my god.
SPEAKER_11Then I don't know what to do. What am I otherwise?
SPEAKER_09Nor am I a magician.
SPEAKER_11Well, I don't know everything you do.
SPEAKER_09Stay at the hotel.
SPEAKER_11Yes, the hotel. That's what I'll do.
SPEAKER_09You can book a reservation at the adjacent Magic Castle Hotel, which can request a guest invitation to the Magic Castle for you. If you get an invitation, you have to follow the strict club guidelines. There are no children. It is 21 and up. More things need to be that way.
SPEAKER_11Nirvana, everything. Supermarkets, toy stores.
SPEAKER_09I mean, they have a strict formal dress code, conservative business attire enforced. Suits and tie for men, dresses, or you know, pant suits, yada yada.
SPEAKER_11Like a dressy pant suit like you wear?
SPEAKER_09Yes. Uh no photos, no cameras, no videos. Recording devices are strictly banned past the lobby. Dinner or brunch reservations and a minimum purchase are required for all visitors. And that is how you can tour the magic castle.
SPEAKER_11I love all of this information, Colby. I took issue with the way you pronounce tour earlier, but I let it go because I'm a good person. It's tour of a skill. Well, everyone, we laughed, we cried, we learned a trick or two. Is anything up our sleeves? Maybe the will to live and carry on. Yes, yes, it is, because you, our dear listeners, give us the will to sally forth and to, I don't know, watch the I I was gonna insert some magic analogies right here, but I'm just a dry well. Colby, thanks for all your magnificent breakdowns. You truly are Colby the Magnificent.
SPEAKER_09Thank you, Chris.
SPEAKER_11My god, does everyone hear what I have to go through even when giving a compliment? So if choosing between a compliment and a hilarious insult, the conclusion is logical.
